#FactsTalk

00:00 It's rainy season again.
00:01 Admit it, you're one of those who are waiting for hashtags like #walangpasok, right?
00:05 Asus!
00:06 I'm Gail Cayetano, and welcome to Facts Talk!
00:09 It's not new to us that the Philippines has been hit by a typhoon.
00:16 So to keep ourselves updated, we're relying on weather forecasts,
00:20 whether it's on TV or online.
00:22 But the sad reality is, most of us are being fooled by fake weather advisories.
00:27 Big yikes!
00:29 I know many of you are asking,
00:30 "How do you know if a weather advisory is fake?"
00:33 It's fake if the information is vague,
00:36 the type that will just make you do whatever you want.
00:39 It comes from unofficial sources,
00:41 there's no official logo from the weather agency like Pag-asa,
00:45 blah blah blah,
00:46 BORING!
00:48 You most definitely heard this so many times.
00:52 Just like your ex's apologies that he won't repeat when he's fooling you.
00:56 Kimmy!
00:58 So instead of determining if a weather alert is fake,
01:00 how about let's rephrase it to a much better term.
01:03 How do you understand weather advisories,
01:06 and how can you tell if it's legit?
01:08 Because in this fam, we stand smart guys and gals.
01:12 Many weather agencies use the same terminology as Pag-asa.
01:16 Not gonna lie, some are just too complicated.
01:19 But as the K-pop girl group TWICE said,
01:21 "I'm gonna make this simple for you."
01:23 So I gotcha!
01:26 Whenever it rains, weather alerts like rainfall warnings are issued.
01:31 For sure, you've heard of yellow, orange, and red rainfall warnings.
01:35 But what's the difference between them?
01:37 Yellow rainfall warning is issued for community awareness.
01:41 It lets the public know that flooding is possible in low-lying areas
01:45 or places near rivers.
01:48 From community awareness to community preparedness is already in place
01:51 when the orange rainfall warning is issued.
01:54 It means that residents need to be prepared
01:57 because there's a risk of flooding in low-lying areas or nearby river channels.
02:02 Red rainfall warning is issued when a community response is needed.
02:07 Meaning, people need to evacuate because the flood is expected.
02:12 Rainfall warning advisory is issued depending on whether it's a storm or a storm.
02:17 So what's the advisory when there's a storm?
02:20 It's called Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal.
02:23 This is the signal number that is reported
02:25 and is based on hashtags that are not included in the classes or offices
02:30 that you usually expect.
02:32 Amen!
02:33 Wind signals are being raised in provinces or cities
02:36 except for Metro Manila where they are placed at a single wind signal level.
02:40 It depends on the strength of the wind that's close to the tropical cyclone.
02:43 The weather bulletin called "Pag-asa" is issued to update us about this.
02:48 But what is the basis?
02:50 This is where the Tropical Cyclone categories are included, in which we have five.
02:54 Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 1 or Tropical Depression
02:58 is issued when the low-pressure area is running at 61 km/h or below.
03:04 It's possible that it will hit the houses made of wood and light materials.
03:09 Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 2 or Tropical Storm
03:13 is issued when it's running at 62 to 88 km/h.
03:17 It's disruption is minor to moderate in public transportation.
03:20 Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 3 or Tropical Tropical Storm
03:24 is issued when it's running at 89 to 117 km/h.
03:30 Some places may experience power outages.
03:33 Signal 4 or Typhoon is issued when it's running at 118 to 184 km/h.
03:40 The threat to life and property is significant to severe
03:43 where minor to moderate roof damage will occur in well-constructed houses.
03:48 And the most dangerous and severe is the Super Typhoon category or Signal 5
03:54 where the LPA is moving at 185 km/h.
03:59 It's possible that the houses and establishments below it will be cut off.
04:04 Electricity, water, and telecommunications are now unavailable
04:08 due to disruption in facilities.
04:11 And the most difficult is the high chance of injuries and deaths.
04:16 Now that you know the different types of weather alerts,
04:19 where can you access these advisories?
04:21 Simple.
04:22 We'll go with the legit and reliable ones
04:25 like our weather presenters
04:27 who are dedicated to keep up with the weather updates.
04:31 If you're often on social media,
04:33 why not follow the Weather Agency of Hope
04:36 or trusted news sources like GMA Integrated News?
04:40 Yee! I'm shameless!
04:43 On a more serious note,
04:45 always remember that not all information you found online are legit.
04:49 These fake alerts can cause panic to a lot of people
04:52 so we should know how to spot the truth
04:55 so that we can avoid falling for the wrong person.
04:58 Oops, wrong info.
05:01 Sheesh!
