Earlier in the current month, there was an outbreak of communal violence in Haryana's Nuh district during a procession organized by Vishva Hindu Parishad. The violence resulted in the unfortunate deaths of two home guards and numerous officers sustaining injuries. On the 13th of August, the Sarv Jatiya Hindu Mahapanchayat called for the resumption of the Brij Mandal Shobha Yatra in Nuh, initially disrupted due to the July district violence.
On Monday, the Haryana police apprehended Viresh Shandilya, the leader of Vishwa Hindu Takht (VHT), just moments before his departure for Nuh district to participate in the 'Jal Abhishek' yatra. According to SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa, Shandilya has been placed under ""house arrest"" at his residence in sector 1.
Amidst these developments, Haryana has been placed on high alert with extensive security measures in effect. This comes after the Sarv Jatiya Hindu Mahapanchayat's call for a 'Shobha Yatra' in Nuh district on Monday, despite Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's denial of permission for the procession.
In response to these events, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar emphasized that given the recent violence in Nuh district, it's imperative for the government to take stringent actions to uphold law and order. The authorities have decided that instead of holding a procession, individuals should visit nearby temples for prayers. CM Khattar clarified that while the government has not granted permission for the Shobha Yatra, people are free to worship in the temples. He suggested that people offer prayers at local Shiva temples, considering the communal clashes in the district just a month prior.
Expressing dissent, Shandilya criticized Chief Minister Khattar for denying the Yatra, asserting that they don't require permission to visit a temple.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, Dhirendra Khadgata, the Deputy Commissioner of Nuh, declared the imposition of Section 144 and the suspension of internet services in the district from August 27, 12 AM, to August 29, 12 AM. This step was taken to ensure the safety of residents and maintain law and order. Alongside the suspension of mobile internet, bulk SMS services were also halted until August 28. The administration's concern was that these services could potentially be misused to rally groups, resulting in violence and property damage.
To address the situation effectively, Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur led a video conference with senior officers from neighboring states. The aim was to devise a coordinated strategy for managing the situation. The meeting included senior police officials from Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
