00:00 The NSW Government is proposing to build 97 dwellings at this former unused TAFE site
00:08 in Bega on the far south coast.
00:10 So the NSW Premier Chris Minns was joined by Member for Bega Michael Holland and the
00:14 Federal Member for Edomoneiro Kristi McVean in Bega today to make the announcement.
00:18 They flagged that of the 97 dwellings, 30% of which will be dedicated to social and affordable
00:24 housing.
00:25 Bega's housing situation is pretty dire.
00:27 The NSW Government revealed that the social housing priority waitlist has increased by
00:33 56% in the 12 months to June this year.
00:37 Not only that, but Bega has one of the lowest vacancy rates in NSW at just 0.24%.
00:44 Here's what Member for Bega Michael Holland and the Premier had to say about it in Bega
00:49 this morning.
00:50 Today we're announcing the transfer of this site which will be developed into 97 dwellings
00:58 of which 8 will be affordable housing and 24 will be social housing including 20 accommodation
01:06 dwellings for the older generation.
01:09 The other 65 will be private.
01:11 So this wonderful collaboration with NSW Government working with Land and Housing Corporation.
01:19 One of the reasons why after we were elected we made a decision to look at surplus government
01:24 land right across the state to see if we can convert it into housing for the people of
01:31 NSW.
01:32 It would be particularly distressing for the community of Bega to see a vacant property
01:37 as Rose said remaining vacant for years.
01:41 The NSW Government proposal is still subject to planning approvals.
01:46 It is in the hands of the NSW Land and Housing Corporation but they will need the support
01:52 of the local Bega Valley Shire Council.
01:54 However the NSW Government has flagged that they would like to see construction at this
01:59 site begin next year.
