00:00 Ok then Biju, mind if you just give me an overview of what the day's initiatives are about in place?
00:04 We are going to celebrate the diverse culture here. Our care home got staff from different countries, mainly 10 different countries.
00:12 And we got a multicultural here and we are going to promote the cultural diversity by doing so many things here today.
00:20 And what sort of things have you got on?
00:22 We got staff who are going to perform and all staff came with the traditional clothes and they are going to perform the traditional dances or events.
00:36 Then again all the staff got the traditional food that we are going to share with everyone also.
00:42 Are the residents going to be involved?
00:43 Yeah, residents, families and professionals also.
00:49 When Biju calls you always say yes if you can. Occasionally when he asks me to do things I'm not here, I'm in Westminster and then I can't.
00:58 But it's always a pleasure to be here and it's a wonderful idea to have an event celebrating cultural diversity because our city has changed in the time that I've been here since 2010.
01:10 We are becoming a much more diverse city with people from all over the world which is a positive thing in my view.
01:16 Ok then Julie, how keen were you to come along today and get involved in this event?
01:20 I was delighted to come back to the Marigold home today. It's a home I've visited a number of times and it's always very very welcoming.
01:27 But the idea of holding an event to celebrate cultural diversity is a really positive thing and I'm very very pleased to be here.
01:36 Well it's good to see you all here today. As Mayor of Sunderland I am privileged to host and attend a variety of important events across the city.
01:46 Many of which promote diversity through recognition and celebration of the many cultures in Sunderland.
01:54 To name a few would be Refugee Week and the Interfaith Walk, Chinese New Year, Ramadan, Diwali celebrations, African and Caribbean Heritage and Black History Month celebrations.
02:09 It's through these events and other community led events like this, one hosted by you today, that the people of Sunderland can come together as one united community.
02:21 Ok then, how pleased are you to be at this event today?
02:25 I'm very pleased to be at these events. It's such a nice thing to see the homes and the families and the staff and the residents enjoying themselves.
02:35 And how important is it as a city we promote diversity and multiculturalism?
02:39 It's very important. We are becoming a more diverse city now and they can only bring good things to us. Their business, their professions, yes it's very good for the city.
02:53 Is Sunderland very much a multicultural city now?
02:57 I think it is because I think we're seeing more and more events like these. I've certainly seen a lot since I became mayor and I think we are becoming a very diverse city.
03:09 To promote the diversity day you'll see we've got food from all over the world.
03:14 We've got Indian food, including different types of curry.
03:18 We've got an Indian beef curry there.
03:21 An Indian beef stir fry.
03:24 We've got Filipino noodles and spring rolls.
03:28 Jamaican jerk chicken, Spanish soup.
03:33 Angola cod fish.
03:36 And obviously we've got here the buffet of more traditional English foods.
03:41 And basically we've got foods being made by the workforce who come from different parts of the world here at the care home.
