00:02 Hi guys, Neil Tappin here from Golf Monthly
00:08 and welcome to this Iron Play tips video
00:10 in which we're gonna be taking a look
00:12 at how to hit the punch shot more effectively.
00:14 I'm gonna be joined by Luke Peterkin from Honmar.
00:17 He's Honmar's custom fitting specialist here in the UK.
00:20 He's also a PGA pro and he's got some great advice
00:23 on how to play this shot more effectively, more repeatably.

00:37 But let's head out now to the golf course here at North Hans
00:39 and find out about Luke's punch shot tips.
00:42 Okay, so fifth hole here at North Hans.
00:44 We've got about 160 yards and it's slightly into the wind.
00:47 Probably not enough really today
00:50 to force you to hit a punch,
00:51 but still a good one to be able to show everyone
00:53 how to do it.
00:54 - Yeah.
00:55 - Luke, what's the thinking?
00:56 How do you bring that trajectory down?
00:59 - So, again, if we use our, say, stock iron shot
01:03 as a benchmark to work from.
01:05 So, 155, maybe a seven iron, just a stock me seven iron.
01:10 So I would take then my length of swing
01:13 and my swing speed of my stock shot
01:15 and then dial it down a bit.
01:16 So I wouldn't swing back as far
01:18 and I wouldn't apply as much club head speed.
01:21 Both of those already will change my trajectory quite a bit.
01:24 - Okay.
01:25 - And especially with this shot
01:26 where the pin is right at the back,
01:28 we've got lots of green to work with.
01:29 So actually this is quite a nice shot to employ
01:31 because those effects that we're going to have
01:34 on our trajectory will mean that the golf
01:35 will roll out that little bit more.
01:37 - Okay.
01:38 - So it's a nice shot to play
01:39 if there's no danger in front of the green.
01:41 We've got two green side bunkers there,
01:42 but we're gonna be nice in between those.
01:44 - And try and run it up there.
01:45 So usually you'd be hitting a seven iron from here,
01:47 but you're gonna club up?
01:48 - Yeah, club up a little bit.
01:49 Again, to counter the fact that we've dialed down
01:52 the swing speed and the swing length.
01:53 - Okay, let me give you six iron then.
01:55 - Okay.
01:56 - Yeah?
01:57 - And not only that,
01:59 there's also a couple of address changes.
02:01 - Yeah, a couple of setup changes.
02:03 Yeah, exactly.
02:04 So I would take my ball to target line
02:08 and then work a little bit left of that.
02:10 So basically--
02:11 - So setting feet left of it.
02:13 - Feet slightly left.
02:15 - Why do you do that?
02:16 - So similar to where we said about the shorter pitch shot.
02:19 So we're already kind of setting,
02:20 pre-setting our hips into our kind of impact position
02:23 because we're not using as much speed.
02:26 So it gets us delivering the club in a consistent way.
02:30 - Right, okay.
02:31 - In other words, I can keep my club face much more stable
02:34 by keeping my hips a little bit more open
02:38 with this shot that we're choosing.
02:42 - But crucially, shoulders are not open to--
02:44 - No, not so much at all.
02:46 I'm keeping those actually fairly parallel
02:47 to the target line itself.
02:49 It's just the hips to give me the space
02:51 to then not get into any of those type of habits
02:55 where we're flipping the hands over.
02:56 - Okay, good.
02:57 - All right.
02:58 - Give us a go.
02:58 - Okay, so slightly left.
03:00 My ball position will be slightly back of center as well,
03:03 but that's about it.
03:05 Shorter swing and less speed.
03:06 And then it will chase up there.
03:14 - Perfect, so you can see from that,
03:15 Luke, have another go for us,
03:16 just how easy Luke makes that seem to play that shot
03:21 because you're taking speed out of it,
03:22 because you're taking more club.
03:24 You can make a more sort of relaxed, easygoing swing at it.
03:27 Should be one that every golfer out there
03:29 can really play and control.
03:30 And it's got plenty of run on it
03:35 when it's hitting the ground, hasn't it?
03:36 - Yeah, exactly.
03:37 So we're able to cover a yardage of 155 yards,
03:39 but like you say, in a very controlled, repeatable way.
03:42 - Yeah.
03:43 - And we can apply that to many different scenarios as well.
03:45 - So there you have it.
03:46 Some great advice there from Luke
03:47 on how to hit the punch shot.
03:49 Really simple, really easy.
03:50 Something that every golfer should be able to do.
03:53 Guys, thank you very much for watching.
