00:10 Breaking news from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
00:17 Ohio State has a starting quarterback, at least for week one.
00:21 Ryan Day is officially named Kyle McCord,
00:23 the starting quarterback against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday.
00:28 We'll find out what that means moving forward.
00:30 Is he gonna take every meaningful snap all year?
00:33 We know the answer to that is no, cuz he said Devin Brown is going to take some
00:37 meaningful snaps on Saturday, but will he be the starting quarterback of the year?
00:40 How long will this last for either guy?
00:43 Possibly undetermined, but
00:44 let's react to the news we learned here this afternoon.
00:47 Anthony, your first thoughts on finding out that Kyle's the guy.
00:51 >> Yeah, kind of what we expected, I think.
00:53 If you're gonna go into this situation, this quarterback competition,
00:58 go in week one with the veteran guy, the guy with just a touch more experience.
01:03 So kind of exactly what we were anticipating.
01:06 However, I know we talked this morning on it in our show this morning that we had
01:11 some thoughts on how Ryan Day was going to handle today's press conference and
01:16 what he was gonna say.
01:17 And I think that we both were kind of shocked and
01:20 surprised about how much he actually said.
01:23 I think he was pretty open in the fact that, hey, there was a legit competition.
01:27 And there were days that Devin was better than Kyle, and
01:30 there was days that Kyle was better than Devin.
01:32 And they went back and forth.
01:34 And he was very open about the fact that the team is also bought in on both guys.
01:39 And he's gonna say that, and right, you can take him at his word, and
01:44 you have no reason not to.
01:46 But it was really, I thought, eye-opening response from him to be
01:52 really an open book about the whole situation.
01:53 I personally thought he wasn't gonna talk much about it.
01:56 I thought he was gonna say it right out front, and then let's talk Indiana.
01:59 But they spent a fair amount of time on it, and he had a lot of very
02:04 eye-opening things to say about how the fall camp has gone so far.
02:09 >> And if you're interested and you didn't see the press conference earlier today,
02:12 that's over on our Buckeyes Now YouTube channel.
02:15 It's also available on buckeyesnow.com.
02:19 I have to admit the thing that actually I most took away from that entire decision
02:25 was that he said a couple of weeks ago when he was asked what it's gonna take
02:30 to make that decision, he said he wanted a sizable gap.
02:33 And when he was asked the follow-up question today,
02:36 was there a sizable gap that helped you get there?
02:39 He said, actually, no.
02:41 So it sounds like this is still kind of a little bit of a competition that's ongoing,
02:48 but they half the name started quarterback for week one.
02:51 And he said, look, there were days, as you pointed out, days that McCord was better,
02:54 days that Brown was better.
02:56 And over the last two weeks, he said Kyle's been a little bit more consistent, so
02:59 he's gonna get the first reps.
03:01 But it is currently Coach Day's plan to give Devin Brown a chance to play
03:05 meaningful minutes, meaningful snaps on Saturday,
03:09 which tells me that maybe this isn't completely and totally done.
03:13 But I don't blame him for kind of going the McCord direction here.
03:17 I've said it a bunch of times in years past and in recent podcasts.
03:22 I think Kyle's a great player.
03:23 I don't think we should judge him based on the sample size when he played against
03:28 Akron last year, that seems kind of silly.
03:31 He's got a huge arm, he's a really smart kid, he's mobile,
03:36 he works his butt off, it's pretty obvious.
03:39 His teammates really, really like him.
03:40 I think he's got a chance to be a great quarterback.
03:43 Is he the guy moving forward?
03:45 I think there's still an element of he might have to go and
03:47 earn that a little bit.
03:48 But he's clearly won the race thus far.
03:53 He's gonna get the first crack against the Hoosiers.
03:55 >> I would add to that, Coach Day had said something today that he was really
03:59 impressed about how Kyle responded.
04:01 It seemed to be about ten days ago,
04:03 Coach Day mentioned that Devin made a really big push.
04:06 He had a couple good days of practice in a row, and
04:08 things were starting to lean towards Devin Brown.
04:11 And he had said that Kyle had a great response to it.
04:14 And took the back seat, right, got put down as the number two, and
04:18 just fought back and showed a lot of resiliency to adversity.
04:22 And then let's face it, you're gonna face adversity on Saturday against Indiana.
04:25 You're gonna face adversity against Western Kentucky.
04:27 You're gonna face adversity against Notre Dame, Michigan, and Penn State.
04:30 So that, I think, is a good sign.
04:33 But to your point, this isn't a done deal.
04:35 Kyle's gonna get the first couple steps.
04:37 The reason he's named the starter is cuz you can't run two guys out there to
04:40 both catch the snap at once.
04:42 So Kyle will get the first go at it.
04:44 Then you'll see Devin come in and get meaningful time.
04:46 And we'll see how it shakes from there.
04:48 But just a very good thing to get a guy, right?
04:53 He picked one, now there's a direction.
04:55 Now the team can go.
04:57 Marvin Harrison knows who's gonna be the starter on Saturday.
05:00 JT Tulumoa knows who's gonna be the starter.
05:03 So everyone knows now, now we go from here.
05:06 >> Marvin gets his high school quarterback,
05:07 which frankly I think is kinda fun too.
05:10 >> So good.
05:10 >> And look, just to be clear, I like the fact that Kyle has been named the starter.
05:18 I think it's a great move for the Buckeyes.
05:20 I want to see how this is gonna go with him.
05:23 I also like the fact that Ryan Day admitted, hey, I told these guys this
05:28 morning, sat them both down together, and both of them agreed and
05:33 said we want what's best for the team.
05:34 So I'm glad that there's some cohesion in that room.
05:39 And I hope they both lift each other up.
05:41 Ryan also said we're not gonna just pull a guy off the field as soon as he throws
05:45 an incompletion or makes a mistake.
05:47 It's not like you're gonna just suddenly see a guy get benched when he doesn't
05:50 play well.
05:51 So I'm glad this is the resolution.
05:55 It's obvious that it wasn't anticipated to be quite this way.
06:00 Ryan Day said he thought he was gonna name a starter a little while ago, but
06:03 it didn't quite pan out that way.
06:05 So the magic question that everybody around the country wants to know the answer
06:08 to has finally reached its finish line.
06:12 Kyle McCord is gonna take the first snaps for
06:14 the Buckeyes in 2023, Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana.

06:26 live at 7 AM Eastern every day.
06:28 Anthony and I are gonna talk a little bit more about this situation,
06:31 certainly in depth, but also we're gonna break down more on a general level.
06:36 Ohio State's offense against Indiana's defense, specific places we think that
06:40 maybe the Buckeyes could take advantage of the Hoosiers coming up on Saturday.
06:44 So we hope we'll see you tomorrow morning on Buckeye Breakdown.
06:47 But until then, please check out Buckeyes Now for all the latest.
