00:00 Jordan, Sunday was an interesting day at St James' Park. For 75 minutes or so, Newcastle pretty much battered Liverpool.
00:07 Were really on top of the game, obviously had that 1-0 lead and then in a mad 10 to 15 minute spell at the end,
00:14 things went completely wrong for those in black and white. Can you begin to summarise just exactly how Newcastle managed to not win that game?
00:23 We've had a few days to reflect now and there's still a bit of shock there as to how Newcastle lost the game from that position because
00:31 under Eddie, how Newcastle have been so good in games, managed games really well,
00:37 I'd say that final 15 minutes just was a little bit mismanaged, turned into chaos in the end really.
00:43 I think, you're right, Newcastle for 16 minutes looked comfortable as they really should have against 10 men.
00:50 A goal up, a man up, I couldn't have predicted that Newcastle would lose a game from that position, but they did.
00:57 I think the reason why they did was because of the substitutions for both teams.
01:01 When Liverpool went down to 10 men, they almost put extra bodies in the midfield.
01:06 Then around the 60 minute mark, 70th minute mark, they injected a lot of energy and pace in there.
01:13 Dalwin Nunes went up front by himself, had obviously more salah for support, but also like Santiago, Jota and Javi,
01:20 Eliyahu came on off the bench, provided a lot of energy in that midfield.
01:24 Newcastle, after taking off, Sandro, Tonali were a little bit light in midfield.
01:28 Jolentin obviously went off later on as well, but taking Tonali and Jolentin out of that midfield almost left Bruno a little bit exposed.
01:38 Liverpool really did expose that Newcastle night in midfield in the closing stages.
01:43 It was two balls through and Dalwin Nunes, it was a major shock.
01:48 Even to score the equaliser was a shock, but to score the winner as well, Liverpool, St James' Park was stunned.
01:55 It's an unfamiliar feeling for this team and for the supporters as well.
02:01 I think times like that under previous owners, under previous managers, like Steve Bruce, Mike Ashira, results like that wouldn't come as a shock.
02:10 But because Newcastle, as I say, have been so good under Eliyahu, it was a really difficult one to take.
02:17 But sitting here now, we're still disappointed.
02:21 It feels like it was a big opportunity to beat Liverpool that they missed, having Liverpool have had Newcastle's number in previous seasons.
02:30 Obviously, the only team last year that did a double over them and only Castle picked them in the top four.
02:35 But Liverpool have got some good results over Newcastle, particularly at St James' Park as well.
02:41 Eliyahu has only lost five games as a Newcastle manager at St James' Park and three then have been against Liverpool.
02:46 So it was a big opportunity to beat them.
02:48 Unfortunately, they haven't done it.
02:50 But I can't criticise this team too much yet.
02:53 Only three games up in the season.
02:55 Hopefully, it's a big wake-up call for them.
02:57 Get the disappointment out of the way early.
03:00 What happens on Saturday can be quickly forgotten about if they don't get a result at Brighton on Saturday.
03:07 Yes, if we look at that Brighton game before we look at transfers, obviously, Brighton are a team who are in amongst it as well.
03:16 And certainly, we were last season in those European places, top six hunting.
03:21 But they had a job done on them by West Ham on Saturday as well.
03:25 And for all Brighton's possession and for all that pressure on the West Ham goal, West Ham had a couple of counter-attacks,
03:31 very similar to Liverpool, and won the game at the Amex.
03:35 So is it a case of when Newcastle might actually have to change the way they play?
03:39 And could there be any changes to their line-up in order to do what West Ham did?
03:44 Yes, I watched the game, Brighton-West Ham, and it was a really strange game.
03:50 I don't know if anyone out there has seen it last season, but Everton went to Brighton in the closing stages of last season
03:56 and won, I think it was, 5-1 in the end.
03:58 And the similarities are very similar.
04:01 So Brighton had a lot of possession, almost on top of the West Ham defence, but West Ham had a breakaway.
04:08 And look, they were deadly in the counter-attack, and that's how they won the game.
04:12 I don't think that'll be Newcastle's style on Saturday.
04:15 Newcastle don't play that way.
04:17 They play possession, their front foot, which I don't think will change the tactics for that.
04:22 I don't think there'll be too much panic among Newcastle United dressing room.
04:26 I think they'll stick to what has got them to this point in terms of being in Champions League football,
04:33 their top team in the Premier League.
04:35 I don't expect too much to change tactically.
04:39 It's a shame that Brighton have suffered a freak result like that a week before the play in Newcastle,
04:45 because the fear is, will two games be the same and will they lose two games at the Amex?
04:51 I suppose only time will tell.
04:53 But having lost back-to-back games, Newcastle against Man City and Liverpool,
04:58 there's a little bit of pressure going into Brighton now to get a result.
05:01 You don't want to be going into the international break on the back of three consecutive defeats,
05:06 coming back after the international break, especially with Champions League football to come.
05:11 It would feel like, for the first time in a while, that Clovey are on a little bit of a downer,
05:17 because they haven't had this under Eddie Howe.
05:21 Certainly, after that first chance window under Eddie Howe, where they surged to Premier League survival
05:27 and obviously got top four.
05:29 So I think there will be a bit of a disaster after winning loss at Brighton on Saturday.
05:35 It's a possibility Brighton are a really good side.
05:39 I suspect Newcastle will be fired up.
05:42 I don't think Eddie Howe will make too many changes to his start 11,
05:45 because as you mentioned earlier, for 75 minutes in that game against Liverpool,
05:51 it wasn't a bad performance against Liverpool.
05:54 Newcastle just lost the way in the final 15 minutes.
05:58 I don't think there's a need to make too many changes to the start 11.
06:02 I'd probably keep it the same, to be honest.
06:05 Let's just hope Newcastle can't get a result at Brighton.
06:10 Speaking of personnel changes, the transfer window is coming to a close.
06:15 It closes on Friday, 1 September.
06:18 Lewis Hall came in last week, of course.
06:20 Are we likely to see anyone else, do you think?
06:23 Barring any injuries, obviously we have the Sven Bortman injury,
06:26 but reports suggest that's not as serious as perhaps first feared.
06:30 Given that, is it likely or unlikely that we're going to see anyone else come into the club?
06:35 Yes, I asked Eddie Howe about this on Friday before the Liverpool game.
06:40 He's pretty much pressed conference and he did play down another signing,
06:45 unless there is - the term he used was 'unless something happens to someone in a position'.
06:51 So that's injuries, as we've seen with Sven Bortman on Sunday.
06:57 But as you mentioned there, it doesn't look too serious, doesn't sound too serious.
07:02 So I don't think, sitting here now, I don't think Newcastle will strengthen.
07:07 But I would be silly to say that to completely rule it out,
07:10 because there's been times in the - certainly last summer, for example,
07:15 Lewis talked of Alexandra Isak.
07:18 The message we would get back from the club was Alexandra Isak,
07:22 the £60 million deal, which it was in the end, is too expensive for us.
07:26 And then two weeks later, they went and done the deal.
07:28 So I'm not going to say to you I'm played down, potentially I'm not that incoming.
07:33 But I do think it's unlikely.
07:36 If you ask me, do I think Newcastle should strengthen?
07:39 I think they should. I think the centre-half is - the right-sided centre-half is,
07:44 I would say, a priority.
07:47 We're seeing in pre-season with Fabian Schär, when he had a little hamstring scare.
07:53 Sven Bortman's obviously had an ankle scare.
07:55 So it just shows that they are one injury away from being really light in that position.
08:01 But on the flip side of that as well, I do think the budget will dictate
08:07 what happens in the final stages of the transfer window.
08:09 So Newcastle could go, 'Yeah, we want to sign a right-sided centre-half
08:12 or just a centre-half in general.'
08:14 But they might not have the funds to do it.
08:17 They'll have to be creative. A term that Eddie Howe has used quite often
08:21 in this transfer window. It was used early on the transfer window
08:25 for the Arlen St Marksland deal.
08:27 They'll have to be creative to sell a player to then bring in a Leicester Harvey Barnes,
08:30 Tino Livermanto. They'll then have to be creative with Lewis Hall.
08:34 They'll have to loan him first, obviously an obligation to buy next summer.
08:38 So I do think Newcastle keep an eye on what's happening in the final stages
08:42 of the transfer window. They may look to do something.
08:45 But as I said to you now, I do think it's doubtful.
08:48 Howard Goines, again, I think that'll be more likely.
08:51 Isaac Hayden hasn't joined Luton Town yet, but is expected to
08:56 when he's medical on Sunday.
08:58 Then you've got the likes of Geoff Henrick, who has been frozen out
09:02 the first-team pitcher. Newcastle want to get him off the wage bill,
09:05 preferably as a permanent, but I suspect that'll probably be a loan as well.
09:09 And then Javier Manquillo is another one that could leave.
09:12 Newcastle have got plenty of options in the full-back positions now
09:15 after signing obviously two in Livermanto and Hall.
09:19 Howe wants to keep Manquillo, but it's up to the player.
09:24 He's got interest from Spain, so that could be another one.
09:27 That could happen before the window closes.
