Newcastle United: Will United make any last minute transfer dealings?
Transcript
00:00 Speaking of personnel changes there, obviously the transfer window is coming to a close.
00:05 It closes on Friday, the 1st of September. Lewis Hall came in last week, of course.
00:10 Are we likely to see anyone else, do you think, or do you think, barring any injuries?
00:14 Obviously, we have the Sven Bortman injury, but reports suggest that that's not as serious as perhaps first feared.
00:20 So given that, is it likely or unlikely that we're going to see anyone else come into the club?
00:25 Yes, so I asked Eddie how about this on Friday before the Liverpool game.
00:30 He's pretty much press conference and he did play down another signing,
00:35 unless there is, the term he used was 'unless something happens to someone in a position'.
00:41 So that's injuries, as we're seeing again with Sven Bortman on Sunday.
00:47 But as you mentioned there, it doesn't look too serious, doesn't sound too serious.
00:52 So I don't think, sitting here now, I don't think Newcastle will strengthen.
00:57 But I would be silly to say that to completely rule it out, because there's been times in the,
01:03 certainly last summer, for example, there was talk of Alexandra Isak.
01:08 You know, the message we were getting back from the club was Alexandra Isak,
01:12 the £60 million deal, which it was in the end, is too expensive for us.
01:16 And then two weeks later, they went and done the deal.
01:18 So I'm not going to say to you I'm played down, potentially I'm not that incoming.
01:23 But I do think it's unlikely.
01:26 If you ask me, do I think Newcastle should strengthen?
01:30 I think they should. I think the centre-half is, the right-sided centre-half is,
01:34 I would say, a priority. We're seeing in pre-season with Fabian Schär,
01:40 when he had his little hamstring scare.
01:43 Sven Bortman's obviously had an ankle scare.
01:45 So it just shows that they are one injury away from being really light in that position.
01:51 But on the flip side of that as well, I do think the budget will dictate
01:57 what happens in the final stages of the transfer window. So Newcastle could go,
02:00 yeah, we want to sign a right-sided centre-half or just a centre-half in general.
02:04 But they might not have the funds to do it.
02:07 They'll have to be creative. A term that Eddie Howe has used quite often in this transfer window.
02:13 It was used earlier on the transfer window for the Alan St Marksland deal.
02:16 They'll have to be creative to sell a player to then bring in a likes of Harvey Barnes,
02:20 Tino Livermanto. They'll then have to be creative with Lewis Hall.
02:24 They'll have to loan him first, obviously an obligation to buy next summer.
02:27 So I do think Newcastle keep an eye on what's happening in the final stages of the transfer window.
02:33 They may look to do something. But as I said to you now, I do think it's doubtful.
02:38 Howard Goines, again, I think that'll be more likely. Isaac Hayden hasn't joined Luton Town yet,
02:44 but is expected to when he's medical on Sunday.
02:48 Then you've got the likes of, you know, Jeff Henrick, who has been frozen out the first-team pitcher.
02:53 Newcastle want to get him off the wage bill, preferably as a permanent,
02:56 but I suspect that'll probably be a loan as well.
02:59 And then Javier Manquillo is another one that could leave.
03:02 Newcastle have got plenty of options in the full-back positions now.
03:05 I thought Sainon obviously too, and Livermanto and Hall.
03:09 Howe wants to keep Manquillo, but it's up to the player.
03:13 So we'll just, he's got interest from Spain. So that could be another one.
03:17 That could happen before the window closes.
