00:02 - Hi, I'm Randy Vance.
00:15 I'm on the Snake River today
00:16 with the folks at Moto Jet Boats and Enmar Marine Engines.
00:21 Now Moto Jet has been building
00:22 extreme high-performance jet boats
00:25 for really rough water since 2012.
00:28 But that company's heritage dates back to the '60s
00:31 when the grandfather of the founder of this company
00:34 started Weldcraft.
00:35 Now there's a new step in Moto Jet's evolution today
00:38 and it's coming from Enmar Marine Engines EcoBoost engine.
00:42 That's a 2.3 liter turbocharged 310 horsepower engine.
00:47 Super quiet, super powerful, and super maneuverable.
00:51 I've got Patrick Riddle today who built this boat.
00:54 He's going to take us out and give us a shakedown cruise
00:57 and tell us how Moto Jet got into Enmar Marine Engines
01:00 for their boats.
01:01 These boats are capable of doing so many different things.
01:10 I mean, we spend a lot of the day
01:12 just kind of riding around easy, enjoying the rapids
01:15 and doing some nice sharp maneuvering.
01:18 Your customers use them all over the place.
01:20 Tell me about that.
01:21 - Yeah, we have customers in, you know, all over the world.
01:25 We've sent boats overseas.
01:27 They're used for every kind of water, whitewater, lakes,
01:31 definitely the shallow water, smaller rivers and creeks.
01:34 - Tell me about one of your experiences
01:36 running them up rapids.
01:38 - Where we are, Hell's Canyon,
01:40 the Snake River, Clearwater Rivers,
01:42 we're not really in the best place as far as shallow water
01:45 for what our boats are made for.
01:47 So we run a lot of whitewater when we take them out.
01:50 The Snake River's got, you know, class four rapids.
01:53 The Salmon River that comes into it's got class four
01:55 and five rapids.
01:56 They do handle whitewater really well.
01:59 This is actually the first boat that we put a EcoBoost in.
02:06 My customer who was kind of still has to borrow it today,
02:10 Jesse Oviatt out of Spokane, Washington.
02:12 We had him sold on this boat with a different engine in it,
02:15 but due to lack of supply, we weren't able to get that engine
02:18 and so it was kind of our chance at Motojet
02:20 to kind of pounce on finally getting to do a EcoBoost.
02:23 Going over the capability of it, the horsepower,
02:26 the 350 foot pounds of torque,
02:28 way more torque than the engine he was going with before.
02:31 It was just a no brainer for him to go with the EcoBoost,
02:34 especially for what he's using it for.
02:36 He's running lakes, Hell's Canyon with his family,
02:39 going camping, so it's got all the capabilities
02:41 of running the bigger water
02:43 and it's a smoother ride for him.
02:44 We've done probably five or six more since then.
02:47 (upbeat music)
02:50 - Tell me a little bit more about how the engine works
02:58 in this boat for you.
02:59 What do you feel when you kick on the throttle?
03:01 - We primarily deal with PWC engines,
03:04 which are under 300 pounds for the engine itself.
03:07 The EcoBoost adds a little bit more weight,
03:09 but in this size of boat, it's better.
03:11 Bow up a lot more, you're not plowing.
03:14 It was a lot better ride and a lot better fit
03:16 for this size of boat.
03:18 They're very quiet compared to any other engine we've done.
03:23 You can sit and have a conversation
03:24 when you're running down the river.
03:26 We don't run mufflers on these boats.
03:27 We just run the exhaust right out the back.
03:29 They don't need it.
03:30 They're so quiet.
03:31 - Tell me how that torque feels
03:32 when you're working the throttle and making turns.
03:35 - Yeah, the maneuverability is really good.
03:37 You know, it's got really good throttle response.
03:40 It's really responsive, really snappy,
03:42 and it's gonna go when you want it to.
03:46 (upbeat music)
03:48 The EcoBoost is really easy to put in.
03:52 We didn't have to learn anything new.
03:54 The nice thing about it, it's plug and play.
03:56 Comes with a five-year warranty.
03:58 The load capability with the EcoBoost in our boats
04:00 is a lot better than what we were used to.
04:03 We're able to get on step quick with more weight
04:06 and cruise at lower RPMs and stay on step.
04:09 The lower RPM gave us a lot of better acoustics,
04:12 better control over the boat.
04:14 We're not having to hammer down the throttle
04:15 to keep it on step, to keep it maneuvering.
04:18 Carries its momentum really well,
04:20 and it's just been overall a great setup in our boats.
04:23 (upbeat music)
04:26 - After spending about two hours on the Snake River
04:32 in the MotoJet powered by the 2.3 liter EcoBoost motor
04:36 by NMAR Marine Engines, I really got a great feel
04:39 for how this motor feels in this kind of application.
04:43 There's a lot of hot-dogging around with the other boats,
04:45 and we had a good time.
04:47 What you learn doing that is that that 4,500 RPM,
04:52 310 horsepower, high torque motor,
04:55 really gives you a tremendous amount of control.
04:58 I'll tell you where you really are gonna appreciate it.
05:01 It's when you turn from up-current to down-current,
05:03 and down-current to up-current.
05:05 You can really feel the responsive steering
05:07 that comes from that torque.
05:09 Aside from all the performance and speed,
05:11 when you're really gonna enjoy this engine package
05:13 is when you're idling along on the river,
05:15 and you wanna listen to your tunes
05:17 without having your eardrums blown out by the motor.
05:20 Can't believe the acoustics of this engine
05:23 and how pleasant they are when you're drifting along
05:25 and enjoying the day.
05:26 I'm Randy Vance.
