00:00 Have you found a house on the hill?
00:02 No, I still don't have a house. I'm still houseless.
00:06 Who are your influences in music that inspire you with your work?
00:16 I think there are so many people who inspire me.
00:19 I think, let's see, from Adele to Harry Styles, to a lot of British musicians actually.
00:26 Harry Styles to Amy Winehouse a lot.
00:30 Oh, okay.
00:32 You okay?
00:34 I'm good, sorry.
00:35 And then like, you know, Bruno Mars to Justin Bieber to John Mayer.
00:41 It really runs the full spectrum. Yeah, a lot of different people.
00:45 And you mentioned earlier that you worked on a single with Han.
00:49 They just came here a few months ago.
00:52 Yeah.
00:52 Oh my gosh.
00:53 Yeah.
00:54 I'm excited to hear your album.
00:55 I'm very excited for you to hear it.
00:58 We spent two days, three days in the studio in London.
01:02 We wrote two songs.
01:04 We wrote two songs. One of them is the title song for this new album.
01:08 It's a different sound for me, obviously, because it's with Han,
01:12 who are incredible songwriters, singers, producers.
01:15 And we wrote it.
01:17 I came up with this melody while I was on the train going to their studio.
01:20 It just really just kind of flowed out very easily.
01:23 But because of the way it was written, perhaps, I was like,
01:26 what should we do for a music video?
01:27 And we ended up shooting this really cool video on a Korean subway.
01:33 So it's a very cinematic, beautifully shot story that was kind of inspired
01:37 from that initial moment of me being on a subway train,
01:41 coming up with this melody on the way to Han.
01:43 So I hope you enjoy it.
01:45 Is it a love or a romantic?
01:48 You'll have to hear it.
01:49 Oh my gosh, I'm excited.
01:51 But what's your process in terms of songwriting?
01:56 Like, do you get inspired by when you are sad or when you're particularly happy?
02:02 I think it's any time, any moment.
02:04 There are moments where I am sad and I'm like,
02:07 this is a certain expression or a word or a phrase that pops into my mind
02:11 and I'll write it down.
02:13 But when I'm really happy, it's like, how do I express this happiness
02:16 without wanting to be cheesy or cringy?
02:19 How do we do this in a fun way?
02:21 So it's always a certain emotion.
02:24 But the process itself, it can come from anything.
02:26 Sometimes we'll have the track first, and then from there we'll just write words.
02:31 But this time around, I think we spent a lot more time coming up with,
02:36 like, "House on a Hill" was because I was literally looking for a house
02:40 and it happened to be on a hill.
02:41 "Only for a Moment" was because I was on a subway and I was like,
02:45 oh, I like this melody.
02:47 And the words were just right there, "Only for a Moment."
02:51 And then we were like, oh, this is really cool to be on a subway
02:54 and there's so many people around.
02:56 And in this one moment, there's so many different things happening
02:59 to every single person.
03:01 But there's also magic and synergy and very special things that can happen.
03:05 So it really can come from anywhere.
03:08 But that's kind of the fun part of when I'm in songwriting mode.
03:12 It's like, if I was a songwriter right now, I'd be like,
03:16 oh, after this interview, like, oh, I had an interview and this is what--
03:20 the song's going to be called "Interview."
03:21 I have a song called "Interview" for that reason.
03:25 Have you found a house on a hill?
03:27 No, I still don't have a house.
03:29 I'm still houseless, which is fine.
03:34 I travel a lot.
03:35 I think last year I spent about nine months on the road.
03:38 And this year we've spent--what, it's August?
03:42 I think I've spent like six months traveling this year.
03:46 So it's like I don't need a house because I'm never anywhere.
03:51 I have a lot of mileage.
03:53 I hope that you enjoy this time--
03:55 Thank you so much.
