The Equalizer 3 - Movie Review
Transcript
00:00 So the Equalizer 3 is the third chapter in Antoine Fuqua's Equalizer trilogy starring
00:07 Denzel said to be the final chapter as well but they're all the final chapter.
00:11 Until they're not.
00:12 For Equalizer 3 Denzel's character is settled down in this nice little town in Italy.
00:17 I mean by settled down I mean he was wounded and he's been patched up.
00:21 He's been healing in this town.
00:22 And it's an amazing place too.
00:24 Nice people, gorgeous scenery, delicious food.
00:27 The kind of place where if you go to vacation there you seriously consider just forgetting
00:33 to come back.
00:34 But of course underneath it all there are these organized crime scumbags terrorizing
00:37 the citizens there.
00:38 Luckily this is an Equalizer movie which means these simple rules apply.
00:42 The more you fuck around the more you're gonna find out.
00:46 Now first of all Denzel carries this movie.
00:48 He's essentially carried the entire trilogy.
00:51 The man is a consummate professional.
00:53 I can't say anything new that hasn't already been said about Denzel over the decades.
00:58 You show me a Denzel role in which he just phones it in I will show you a movie you apparently
01:03 slept through.
01:04 Complete and total goat and he carries this film as well.
01:07 He's intense, he's deliberate.
01:08 You know what I love about his character in these movies is he all but begs the baddies
01:14 to just not fuck around.
01:16 Let's not find out today.
01:18 Just go away.
01:20 Please.
01:21 You really feel it in Equalizer 3.
01:23 You really feel like he wants to enjoy the retirement that he's just fallen into.
01:28 You feel that sense of community and in a way in Equalizer 3 you've never seen before
01:32 you feel that his character has found some sort of joy, happiness and even peace.
01:37 Now I will say this movie is more of a slow burn than I thought it was gonna be.
01:41 Maybe more of a slow burn than some people want it to be.
01:44 It starts out with an action sequence that holds you over and appreciative on that because
01:48 it is a nice satisfying bloody one.
01:50 But after that it takes about an hour to really get things going.
01:53 In the meantime you're hanging out with Denzel in this town as he's getting to know the people.
01:59 You see the organized crime scumbag elements start to rear its ugly head.
02:02 They start to cause problems.
02:04 There's definitely a trajectory into conflict that is coming but for that first hour it
02:09 really is seeing Denzel get attached to the townspeople.
02:13 Funny enough I can't remember any of the characters names but you kind of don't have to in order
02:19 to feel the sense of community.
02:22 I'm like hey you got the doctor guy, the cop guy, the nice lady at the cafe.
02:26 That might be a me thing.
02:27 I'm shit with names anyway.
02:29 Suppose the point is it is impressive that you don't need to know their names in order
02:32 to feel the sense of community.
02:34 To feel the need for this world, these people, this way of life to be protected from shithead.
02:41 Point being it being a slow burn it was burning with purpose.
02:44 Antoine Fuqua used that first half of the film to get you attached to the community.
02:48 Though not so much the individuals.
02:50 One that stands out is Dakota Fanning in the film.
02:52 It does feel like she's the films day one DLC.
02:55 Like they had the movie and they were like oh we need some American CIA element in here.
03:01 Okay here she is.
03:02 There is a full circle thing that ends up happening by the end but I feel like her character
03:07 in the film just ended up padding the run time.
03:10 Because the movie does feel a bit too long.
03:12 Looking for corners to shave to make the run time shorter.
03:14 That whole arc would be it.
03:16 Love the banter too.
03:17 I don't know that banter is the word but there is some snappy dialogue and comebacks in this
03:22 film.
03:23 You warning me?
03:24 I'm preparing.
03:25 You ever have a heated discussion, debate, argument, otherwise a verbal altercation.
03:30 Then when you're driving home and it's long over you think of what you should have said
03:33 and you're like ah.
03:36 Wish I'd said that.
03:37 He never has that problem.
03:38 He says the optimum thing to say in the moment.
03:41 It's a superpower.
03:43 That is every bit as entertaining to watch as the action is.
03:46 And I will say the big baddie.
03:47 Because a lot of the guys you're dealing with are the street level shitheads.
03:51 But the big baddie.
03:52 The guy in charge of it all.
03:55 I felt it came into the scene far too late in the film.
03:58 I mean largely throughout the film when you've been dealing with these street level villains
04:02 who have been terrorizing this community and you've been dealing with them as the villains
04:06 of the film.
04:07 To bring in the guy behind it all just for the last act felt wasteful.
04:11 But in the end I enjoyed myself.
04:13 Equalizer 3 isn't John Wick.
04:15 It's easy to compare Equalizer to John Wick.
04:18 Maybe at a glance.
04:19 It's like Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo.
04:21 Similar at a glance but in reality so different.
04:24 It's not a balls to the wall from beginning to end action sequence on the edge of your
04:27 seat type action film.
04:29 Much more of a slow burn for the first half but like I said that first half is used very
04:33 well.
04:34 And I had myself a good time.
04:35 No alcohol required.
