  • last year
Rajasthan Police detained eight individuals, one of whom is the husband of a 20-year-old tribal woman, in connection with an incident where she was allegedly stripped and paraded naked in a Pratapgarh district village. After the video of the shocking incident on August 31 went viral on social media Friday night, the police have said that the victim woman was pregnant.
Banswara range IG S Parimala informed The Indian Express that the primary accused, the victim's husband, was furious because the woman, who is four to five months pregnant, had moved in with her lover two weeks earlier. The IG noted, ""She had been living with the accused, her second husband, for the past year.""
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his commitment to taking strict action in the case, emphasizing that the accused individuals would be arrested and tried in fast-track courts.
Pratapgarh SP Amit Kumar Budaniya told The Indian Express on Saturday that the woman's husband and her in-laws were upset because she had been cohabiting with another man for a period. ""Her husband, accompanied by his associates, located her at the place where she was staying with the other man and forcibly abducted her before subjecting her to the humiliating ordeal,"" explained the officer.
The SP added that both the victim and the accused individuals belong to a tribal community.
Rajasthan DGP Umesh Mishra announced on Saturday that those detained included a juvenile and three eyewitnesses to the crime.
SP Budaniya clarified, ""The woman was previously married to another man. Subsequently, as part of the 'Nata Pratha' custom, she began residing with a second man, who is the primary accused in the case. Currently, she was residing with a third man, which infuriated her second partner, leading him and his associates to commit the
crime. There are approximately 12-13 accused individuals in the case, with 10 of them identified by name.""
Let me tell you what is nata pratha
As per a report by tehelka, Nata Pratha is mainly practiced by the Bhil tribe, one of the largest tribes in South Asia. Traditionally, both the man and the woman who enter into a relationship are supposed to be married or have been widowed, but the custom has evolved to include single people as well. The word “Nata” means relationship. Under this system, no formal marriage ceremony is required to live together. Couple can perform all obligations of husband and wife without entering into wedlock. According to the practice, man has to pay money to live — a la modern day live-in relationship — with a woman of his choice, after the woman’s first husband walks out of the marriage and pass on his wife to other man in return for money.

02:05 Subsequently, as part of Nata Pratha custom, she began residing with a second man,
02:10 who is the primary accused in the case.
02:12 Currently, she was residing with a third man, which infuriated her second partner,
02:16 leading him and his associate to commit the crime.
02:19 But what exactly is Nata Pratha?
02:22 As per the report by Tehelka, Nata Pratha is mainly practiced by the Bhil tribe,
02:26 one of the largest tribes in South Asia.
02:28 Traditionally, both the man and woman who enter into a relationship are supposed to be married or have been widowed.
02:34 But the custom has evolved to include single people as well.
02:38 The word Nata means relationship. Under this system, no formal marriage ceremony is required to live together.
02:44 Couple can perform all obligations of husband and wife without entering into a wedlock.
02:49 According to the practice, man has to pay money to live with the woman of his choice,
02:54 after the woman's first husband walks out of the marriage and passes on his wife to other man in return for money.
03:00 This money, the bride price, is fixed by the member of the community or middleman, who may receive a cut for doing so.
03:06 The Rajasthan Police said that a case has been registered under sections 323, 341, 342, 354, 355B, 294, 365, 504, 506, and 498 of the Indian Penal Code,
03:23 along with sections of Indecent Representation of Women Act and 67A, ID Act.
03:29 Reacting to this shocking incident, BJP National President J.P. Nadda has tweeted, and I am quoting,
03:35 "The video from Pratapgarh, Rajasthan is shocking. What is worse is the governance in Rajasthan is totally absent.
03:41 The CM and ministers are busy settling factions' squabbles and the remaining time is spent appeasing one dynasty in Delhi.
03:47 It's no wonder the issue of women's safety is being completely ignored in the state.
03:51 Every single day there is an instance of harassment against women. The people of Rajasthan will teach the state government a lesson."
03:57 Shehzad Poonawalla, BJP spokesperson, shared a video on his Twitter account stating that,
04:02 "The woman who has been beaten mercilessly and paraded naked approached the police, but the police was not interested in filing an FIR."
04:09 He said the minister Shanti Dhariwal said that it is a 'mardo ka pradesh', 'rapes will happen'.
04:14 This is the state where Priyanka Gandhi Wadra says, "Ladki hun, lad sakti hun", but women are saying, "Ladki hun, toh bach sakti hun."
04:21 A shocking and an extremely barbaric video has emerged from Pratapgarh in Rajasthan where in an Adivasi dominated area,
04:30 a woman is being stripped, paraded naked, beaten up brutally, mercilessly and the police did not even know about it.
04:39 The police has woken up after the video became viral. It is because it is said by the media that the victim approached the police,
04:46 but the police was not interested in doing the FIR. How will they? When the chief minister himself says most FIRs of the rapes are fake,
04:54 when the maximum number of atrocities and crimes against women, against SC/STs is taking place in Rajasthan,
05:00 when the minister Shanti Dhariwal says that it is a 'mardo ka pradesh', 'rapes will happen',
05:04 at that time, how can there be sensitivity for women in a state like Rajasthan, which has now become number one in women atrocities?
05:11 This is the state where Priyanka Wadhwa says, "Ladki hun lad sakti hun", but women are saying, "Ladki hun toh bach sakti hun."
05:16 Karoli incident is fresh in our minds. What happened to that Dalit girl?
05:20 We are also remembering the incident of a 14-year-old girl who was gang raped and then put into the bhatti after being killed and cut into pieces.
05:29 We remember the incidents that have taken place on a daily basis.
05:32 10 to 15 incidents of women atrocities are taking place in Rajasthan, but the entire focus of Rajasthan government is "Satta Bachao".
05:39 It is "Apradi Bachao", "Dangai Bachao", "Vote Bank Bachao", not "Beti Bachao".
05:43 Today, those who are accumulated in Mumbai, they do politics over women's issues.
05:48 Today, will they take a stand? Will Mamata Banerjee take a stand? Will Rahul Gandhi take a stand?
05:52 Sitaram Yajuri take a stand? Priyanka Wadhwa, will you take a stand? Will Uddhav Sena take a stand?
05:57 No, they will not take a stand because it is not convenient.
06:00 They did not take a stand when Adivasi women were stripped naked in West Bengal.
06:04 They did not take a stand when Rajendra Guddha, he was trying to raise the issue of women's security and women's safety in Rajasthan.
06:10 He was chucked out of the ministry.
06:12 Divya Madherna, an MLA of the Congress Party has said, "Forget other women, I am unsafe in Rajasthan."
06:17 But nobody has spoken a word about it.
06:19 Mahesh Joshi's son was involved in a rape case, but no FIR was filed against him.
06:24 So, this shows the attitude of Congress Party, particularly Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Wadhwa.
06:29 When it is convenient, they will go in other states and do politics, but today they will not say a word.
06:34 They should demand resignation and sack Mr. Ashok Ghelal.
06:38 But instead, they will only protect him and divert.
06:41 That's all on the news report. Stay tuned with HW News English. Thank you for joining us.
