00:00 - Hello everyone, Neil Tappan here from Golf Monthly
00:02 and welcome to the London Club and this video
00:04 in which we are looking at eight weird things
00:07 that golfers do.
00:08 These are the sorts of things that many of us do
00:10 subconsciously or even consciously
00:12 that doesn't make a lot of sense to non-golfers
00:15 but that we all have in common.
00:16 We're gonna run through our list now
00:18 of the eight weird things that golfers do.
00:20 (upbeat music)
00:28 (golf ball clinks)
00:31 Now, have you ever done that where you've hit a shot
00:36 and used your body to lean
00:38 to help bring the ball back into play?
00:40 It's something many of us golfers do
00:42 and I'm not sure it works.
00:43 I'm not sure that you can use the force
00:44 to bring the ball back to play.
00:46 The other one that falls into this category
00:48 is when you hit a putt that's looking like it might go in
00:51 but it also might miss, the little knee bend
00:53 just to help the ball on its way.
00:55 Not 100% sure they work.
00:57 I think for the non-golfer, that would look pretty weird.
00:59 (upbeat music)
01:02 Now, the next one on my list relates to putting
01:10 with your glove hanging out of your back pocket.
01:12 Now, I think this emanates from the tour
01:15 but exactly where, I'm not sure.
01:16 If you do know, please do leave comments below.
01:19 It's something that the vast majority of golfers do
01:21 and I'm struggling to think of any other walk of life
01:23 where you would have your glove
01:25 hanging out of your back pocket.
01:26 It might seem like a strange thing to do
01:29 but it does make sense to us golfers.
01:30 (upbeat music)
01:33 Get up, get up, get up.
01:41 Sit, sit.
01:43 (upbeat music)
01:56 Why do golfers stand like that?
01:58 (upbeat music)
02:00 Now, golfers like most sports people
02:06 have their own superstitions.
02:07 I've seen a whole host over the years,
02:10 whether that's lucky ball markers
02:12 or only using certain numbered golf balls,
02:14 whether that's odds or evens or ones or threes,
02:17 whatever it might be, I've seen quite a few.
02:19 Now, I don't have a particular number of golf ball
02:22 that I always use but I do always mark my ball
02:24 the same way, I always put a circle around the number.
02:27 What's your superstition?
02:28 Please do leave comments below.
02:29 The more unusual, the better.
02:31 (upbeat music)
02:34 So the next one on the list is plumb bobbing.
02:39 Now, it might look strange but actually,
02:42 for a lot of those people who do it,
02:43 they really swear by it and it's particularly useful,
02:46 I think, on these putts that are fairly straight
02:49 that could break either from the left or from the right.
02:51 You use the plumb bobbing technique
02:53 just to give you that little bit more assurance,
02:55 that little bit more knowledge
02:56 about what might happen to the putt.
02:58 Now, you see quite a lot of times players doing it on tour,
03:01 you might have even had a stint doing it yourself
03:03 and as I say, for those players that do use it,
03:05 a lot of them swear by it.
03:07 (upbeat music)
03:09 The next one on the list refers to using inanimate objects
03:15 to help you practise your golf swing.
03:17 I'm talking about things like umbrellas
03:19 or remote controls, broomsticks, hoses,
03:22 anything that you can put your hands on
03:24 to practise your grip and then have a little waggle
03:26 and check where you are in the golf swing.
03:28 It's something that a lot of us do,
03:30 partly 'cause we're sort of always obsessing
03:32 about trying to get better at golf
03:33 and I think non-golfers probably would look at us
03:35 in that scenario and wonder what was going on
03:37 but it's something that many of us do.
03:39 What's the strangest thing you've used
03:41 to help you practise your golf swing?
03:42 We'd be interested to hear.
03:44 (upbeat music)
03:46 Now, when it comes to the practise swing,
03:51 you might have thought that the best thing to do
03:53 would be to try and create a direct replica
03:56 of the swing that you'd be looking to make
03:58 as you stood behind the ball
03:59 but for a lot of golfers,
04:00 actually what they're trying to do with their practise swing
04:02 is to groove a certain movement in the swing
04:05 and that can lead to some quite unusual
04:08 looking practise swings.
04:09 I think for the non-golfer, it looks quite weird
04:12 but actually, it does make a lot of sense
04:14 if you're trying to get the club
04:16 in a certain position in the swing
04:17 to create the feeling that you're looking for.
04:20 So there you have it.
04:20 That's our list of eight weird things that golfers do.
04:24 I'm sure that we've missed something.
04:26 If we have, please do post them below.
04:28 Ideas about the strange things
04:29 that you've seen on the golf course,
04:31 we'd be very interested to hear your thoughts
04:33 and also, don't forget to hit the subscribe button
04:36 to make sure that you don't miss any of our videos
04:38 and hit that little notification bell
04:39 so that you know whenever one of our videos is published.
04:43 But for now, that's it from the London Club.
04:45 We will see you next time.
