Since our last Big Test between Chinese vehicles in February, quite a number of China-made cars have entered the local market. For this installment of the Big Test, we’re comparing two compact crossovers: the all-new 2023 Ford Territory and the 2023 GAC Emkoo.

Both these models start at roughly P1.3 million and top out at P1.6 million. Both also have extroverted styling, 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engines, some ergonomic quirks, and a wide spread of advanced features. So, which of the two wins Anton and Niky’s vote in this Big Test? Click play on the video above for the full comparison, and as always, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

00:00 Hello and you join us again for yet another big test.
00:04 And this time around we have a pair of two crossovers.
00:08 Niki?
00:08 Well, these two crossovers offer you a full-size crossover experience
00:14 for a subcompact crossover price.
00:16 So they both want to do the same thing.
00:18 Basically offer a lot of value for not a lot of dough.
00:21 But who does it better?
00:22 Is it GAC or is it Ford?
00:25 Well, we'll give you a bit of a spoiler alert.
00:26 The one made in China wins.
00:30 Wait, okay, mine's made in China.
00:32 So I have a chance.
00:33 Yes, you do.
00:34 Okay, okay, okay.
00:35 And let's get this show on the road.
00:37 I am Anton.
00:38 And I'm Niki.
00:39 And this is The Big Test.
00:41 It's more, you know, because these window sills are really high.
00:57 [Music]
01:05 To start off our sabongan, in the red corner, we have the all-new Ford Territory.
01:10 It's bigger, it's more stylish, it looks like a completely different car to the old one.
01:14 Because it is.
01:16 This is actually the Ford Equator Sport in China.
01:19 Still, it's got all the Ford qualities, all the Ford goodness, the comfort, the size, the power.
01:25 This big boy, I think, has the heart to win.
01:28 Now, in the white, we have the GAC MQ.
01:32 Now, the MQ was introduced at the Manila International Auto Show 2023,
01:37 and we thought it was a pretty radical-looking thing.
01:39 Now, this particular one is actually the top-of-the-line model,
01:43 and the Territory is an entry-level model.
01:46 But we're gonna set aside some of the features in this car just to make things a little bit fairer.
01:50 It's stylish, it's elegant, it's got cool features, and etc.
01:54 But will that be enough to face off the Ford Territory?
01:58 And can it actually challenge the Territory in terms of sales?
02:03 Now, we have a series of tests lined up to find out.
02:05 As with any big test, we'll be putting these two bad boys through several small tests
02:12 to determine the overall winner.
02:14 Our first test is acceleration, but not drag strip acceleration.
02:18 Instead, we'll be testing how easily these cars can pass on the highway
02:22 from 60 kph to 100 kph.
02:25 One of the big selling points of these two bad boys over the Japanese is turbocharged power.
02:30 But does that power make a difference?
02:32 We'll find out.
02:33 Right, so for this little test, what we're gonna do is
02:37 we're gonna put both cars side-by-side, do 60 kilometers per hour.
02:41 At the signal of Charles, well, we're gonna hoof it to 100 kilometers per hour.
02:48 Three, two, one, go.
02:50 Okay.
02:51 Oh, man.
02:53 Okay, you've got it, man.
03:03 You've got it.
03:04 If you gotta go, well, you also gotta stop.
03:20 So for this next test, we're gonna do braking and we're gonna see which one has the better brakes.
03:25 Is it the GAC or is it the Ford?
03:27 And with that, we're gonna do a certain speed, a set speed,
03:30 and just throw out the anchors to see which one stops the shortest.
03:34 Okay, so the brake test is gonna be pretty straightforward.
03:38 Get the car to 60 kph, hit our brake markers at 60 kph, and just throw out the anchors.
03:44 So it's gonna be pretty straightforward from here.
03:48 But first is the MQ.
03:51 All right, so let's bring this up to 60 kph.
03:57 And slam.
04:05 Right, I don't know if that was good or not because, well, this is the first car to go out.
04:12 So I'd say it's pretty good.
04:15 Stopped straight and true, not much in the way of nosedive.
04:19 And yeah, strong anchors.
04:21 On to the Ford.
04:23 So the Ford lost the 60-100 test.
04:26 But I'm confident that on this 60-0 test, the taller sidewalls and the softer set
04:34 should give it a little more grip under braking.
04:36 If that's enough to counter the extra weight, I don't know.
04:39 Still, let's find out.
04:41 Ready.
04:44 In 3, 2, 1, go.
04:47 That's not bad.
05:01 But I don't think that was as good as the GAC.
05:04 Oh well.
05:06 Braking is dependent on a couple of things.
05:08 Depends on how strong your brakes are, how good your tires are,
05:12 and basically how good your ABS is.
05:16 The ABS on this is pretty good, but given how heavy this car is compared to the GAC,
05:21 this was not going to be an easy test to win.
05:25 We're pretty close, but I don't think we've won this one.
05:28 The next test is a test of maneuverability.
05:32 Since these things will be doing school runs,
05:34 we don't actually want to see how well they can maneuver on a racetrack.
05:38 Instead, we want to see how easily they can turn around in tight spaces
05:42 like school driveways or parking lots.
05:44 So the easier they can make a U-turn, the better.
05:48 So for the maneuverability test, we're gonna keep it simple.
05:52 We're gonna go around, do a U-turn basically, or a three-point turn.
05:57 And we have an obstacle in the middle, in this case, a beach chair of all things.
06:02 And what I've done is I'm gonna start from all the way to the curb
06:06 and gonna go all the way if I can take it in one go or if I need to do a three-point turn.
06:13 All right, so I have stopped and turned the wheel all the way.
06:17 Let's see how it does.
06:22 And yeah, that's pretty much it for me.
06:26 Now, the reason I'm not using the cameras in this car
06:30 is because the base model actually doesn't have the 360 view cam.
06:34 It only has a reverse camera.
06:36 So just in the interest of fairness, I am not gonna use the front camera, just the rear camera.
06:44 And well, okay, it's fairly easy to maneuver.
06:50 But a couple of things you have to know about the MQ.
06:52 So you got the high window sills here, so that doesn't help for visibility.
06:57 And so does the very thick D-pillars over at the back.
07:02 Visibility is sort of a low mark for this one.
07:05 Turning radius is okay.
07:07 But yeah, I really think this car needs the 360-degree view camera.
07:12 Well, which this one does have, but the base model doesn't.
07:16 So let's move on to the territory.
07:18 I've got this nifty 3D camera system even on the base model titanium.
07:23 That'll show me exactly where everything is.
07:27 So I can check I'm in the right spot.
07:32 Let's see how tightly we can turn.
07:35 So in terms of turning radius, we're not exactly super above the GAC,
07:48 but this system makes it so much easier to go around.
07:53 So this does have a slightly tighter turning circle,
07:57 and it's easier to maneuver because of that 360 cam.
08:00 [Music]
08:10 On paper at least, the Territory and the MQ have the same engine.
08:15 They're both 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder mills,
08:18 and they're mated to dual clutch transmissions.
08:21 But that's where the similarities end,
08:23 because it could be a totally different matter
08:25 once you're on the road and you're measuring fuel consumption.
08:29 So which one is the more expensive crossover here?
08:32 Is it the more conservatively tuned Territory,
08:35 or is it the surprisingly more potent JCMQ?
08:39 All right, Mickey, on to fuel consumption.
08:42 How did you do?
08:43 Uh, not great.
08:45 8.6 kilometers a liter over our 40-kilometer mixed loop.
08:50 Okay, I was expecting a bit higher than that,
08:53 and you think you have an explanation for that?
08:55 Well, these are 1.5 liter engines,
08:57 but they've been turbocharged to give you the power of a 2.4.
09:01 Now, if you don't use that power, they'll drink gas like 1.5s,
09:05 but since we did use that power,
09:07 and since these are as heavy as full-size crossovers,
09:11 I kind of expected that.
09:13 I kind of expected that you would get the same fuel consumption as a 2.5,
09:17 and it kind of delivered in that regard.
09:20 Well, okay.
09:22 The JC, on the other hand, did 9.3,
09:25 and I think it's because it just uses less of its power reserve.
09:30 So you just need light taps on the accelerator and whatnot.
09:34 So I'm not mashing the throttle all the time to get to the speed I want to,
09:39 and I can just coast all the way.
09:41 Yeah, I had to kind of put my foot in deeper to keep up with you.
09:46 I mean, we weren't going that fast.
09:47 We were going like 80 to 100 over most of the highway loop,
09:50 but still, if I'm trying to keep up with a more powerful car,
09:53 I'm going to be using more of my power reserves and more fuel.
09:58 Plus, consider that this thing is bigger and heavier than that thing.
10:01 It's the expected result.
10:03 Yeah, that's true.
10:04 So definitive result of the GAC wins the fuel economy test.
10:09 Given.
10:09 Now, as these are family crossovers,
10:13 you want to know how much stuff you can put at the back,
10:15 whether it's for grocery runs or your family outings.
10:18 And at the same time,
10:19 these things are actually close in size when it comes to the exterior,
10:24 but it could be a totally different matter when it comes to cargo capacity.
10:28 So let's load up the MQ first.
10:31 So hard case.
10:32 Hard cases.
10:33 All righty.
10:34 If these are stroller bags, you don't want them bumping into the hatch.
10:40 All righty.
10:42 That's not bad.
10:44 So lunch bags.
10:47 All right.
10:47 Lunch bags.
10:49 All right.
10:49 This must be a portable barbecue, I think.
10:53 Right.
10:55 Okay, we can put the lunch bags in there.
10:59 Okay.
11:00 Just so we have more space.
11:03 That seat takes up a lot of space.
11:06 Well.
11:08 No!
11:11 Nope, it's not gonna work like that.
11:14 So these have to go to the back seat.
11:16 It's either for mommy or for grandma.
11:19 Unless...
11:20 See, this is why you're here.
11:25 You're a parent.
11:26 You know how to do these things.
11:27 Most of the time.
11:30 So...
11:32 60% of the time, it works all the time.
11:35 Okay, so there you go.
11:38 Everything fits.
11:40 It feels a bit narrow.
11:42 These wings come way in.
11:45 So you can put a lot of stuff on these wings.
11:49 This extra inch here would have been okay.
11:52 Yeah, it would have been nicer if it was wider.
11:56 But it's okay.
11:57 It's really deep.
11:58 So although we had trouble fitting things in that way,
12:02 you can push them all the way to the back
12:04 and you still have some space here for groceries.
12:06 It's not bad.
12:07 We could stick Leander in here and he'll be comfortable.
12:10 Just won't have a lot of headroom.
12:12 Yeah, so Leander, you heard that.
12:14 You're coming in here.
12:15 Okay, so let's load that yellow thing first.
12:20 I was gonna say I thought this had a higher loading lip
12:24 but this feels a lot lower than the other car.
12:27 So this one's sideways to give us space to load.
12:40 That verticality is coming in to play here.
12:45 We actually might have more room overall.
12:49 Feels a lot looser.
12:51 That's right.
12:52 And we can actually fit an extra chair down here.
12:57 What I noticed about the shape of the Territory is
12:59 there's less of it lengthwise.
13:03 Yeah.
13:04 But there's more of it in terms of width.
13:06 Yeah.
13:07 But even though there is less of it lengthwise,
13:10 just because you have more space to work with,
13:14 I think the lip of that is a bit deeper.
13:16 So that is longer but since this has a lip that comes down low,
13:22 you know, it doesn't intrude into the...
13:24 and this is nice and wide.
13:26 This opening is really wide.
13:27 Okay.
13:28 The Ford might win this by a hair.
13:30 Yeah, and in terms of more usable space,
13:34 yes, the MQ has a wider, sorry, a longer floor.
13:38 But usability, I might have to give it to the Territory too.
13:42 Yeah. All right, folks.
13:44 So that's the cargo test and we're gonna have to give it to the Territory
13:48 because it has just a bit more usable space.
13:51 Just a bit more usable space.
13:53 On to the next one.
13:53 Next up is the back seat.
13:57 Since these are family-sized crossovers,
13:59 they'll be expected to do family duty.
14:01 Of course, they're not PPVs so you don't have a third row
14:05 and you can't take the cousins, the titos, the titas.
14:08 You can't take everyone but you've got to be able to take
14:12 mama, papa, and three kids in comfort wherever you go.
14:16 So we're here in the back of the Ford Territory
14:19 and I feel kind of confident in saying I'm gonna win this one.
14:22 Okay. How?
14:24 I have so much space I can cross my legs without scuffing the seat in front of me.
14:29 Granted, this seat squab is kind of flat.
14:32 It's kind of flat and lifeless but this is a family crossover
14:38 so that makes it better for three people.
14:40 Not so great for two but good for three.
14:42 I think we could actually even fit Dinzo between us if we scooshed over just a little.
14:48 Okay, that is a bold claim.
14:49 Yes.
14:51 But I think it is doable because I still have a fair bit of space right here.
14:56 Look at that.
14:56 And if he's not there, we have an armrest.
15:00 Yes.
15:00 You don't have aircon vent control, unfortunately,
15:03 but you at least have aircon vents.
15:05 You have tiny speakers here in the doors and
15:08 I'm kind of surprised that they used soft-touch material on top of the doors.
15:11 Yes, they did.
15:12 I appreciate the big windows in this one, actually.
15:15 Looking above your head, there is a good amount of headroom.
15:21 All right, so the Territory set the bar pretty high
15:26 so let's jump over to the GAC to see if it can at least match it.
15:30 Yeah, let's find out.
15:32 All right.
15:32 Right, now we are in the M Coupe and right immediately,
15:38 I can feel like I'm more couped up in here compared to the Territory.
15:42 We have about the same amount of headroom, elbow room,
15:45 and I can still cross my legs without kicking the chair.
15:48 Yeah, but it just feels more, you know, because these windowsills are really high.
15:52 Yeah.
15:53 And this is also like really bulky right here and you don't get a window back here.
15:59 You don't get that third window back there.
16:02 It's like you're wearing a helmet.
16:03 It helps that it has a light interior but the entry-level model
16:07 which is the exact competitor of that Territory, it's all black inside.
16:13 And it won't have the panoramic sunroof so you don't have the extra light of that.
16:16 It'll feel like a cave.
16:17 Again, I can cross my legs fine and again, well, can we fit a dinzo between us?
16:23 Just about but not as easily.
16:27 Yeah, he's not going to be comfortable over this middle seat.
16:30 Oh, we don't have an armrest in here.
16:34 That's a big minus.
16:36 For two, this is really comfortable but for three, it might not be.
16:40 And I have a quibble with this.
16:42 I mean the interior materials and design are fantastic.
16:45 The MQ is better with two adults at the back.
16:50 Yeah, it feels better.
16:51 It feels more luxurious, more bespoke.
16:53 But if we're talking kids, three across, especially considering how far that
16:59 center console comes out also, I think the Territory has it.
17:03 Yeah, so the back seats at least, we give it to the Ford even if they're almost equal in room.
17:12 Almost equal in room for two people.
17:14 Yes, for two people.
17:16 But if we had kids back here, that one would be better.
17:19 Yes, agreed.
17:20 So Ford takes the win for the back seat.
17:24 But what about ergonomics?
17:25 So we'll hop to the front.
17:27 Next up, ergonomics and features.
17:31 Now, we know the back seat is big enough for the school run.
17:34 But how do you feel in the driver's seat?
17:36 Do you feel like a bus driver or do you feel like Max Verstappen behind the wheel?
17:40 And what other goodies do you get for how little money you're paying for these two cars?
17:45 Okay, so the rear seat on this is pretty big but I think we can both agree that the front seat
17:52 leaves a little something to be desired.
17:54 Okay, this is weird because normally when you sit in front, that's where all the space is.
18:01 It's the opposite here.
18:02 Like why do I feel like I'm cooped up?
18:05 Why do I feel like I'm in the back seat of the GAC?
18:07 Take your elbows and put them out on the armrests.
18:10 Now, you notice something about the armrests.
18:15 Yeah, yeah.
18:18 So okay, I'm actually pretty close to you.
18:19 The center armrest is close to you and the outer armrest is so far away.
18:25 This feels like, you know, the old Ford Territory was a subcompact.
18:30 So it feels sort of like they took all the hard points of that,
18:33 transferred it to this car, and you know, they just enlarged the car around them.
18:37 So our seats are close together because they used to be closer together in a smaller car,
18:42 and now they're in a bigger car.
18:43 They're still close together so we have a lot of extra space but it's in places we're not gonna go.
18:48 So out here, out here, where you know it doesn't actually serve us.
18:54 But other than that, you know, in terms of driver ergonomics, it's actually fine.
19:00 Okay, so what are the things you like and don't like about the interior?
19:03 So what about going around this infotainment?
19:06 Is it good?
19:06 Is it like, you know, is it a hassle or is it easy to understand?
19:10 It's generally good.
19:12 I mean, I still laugh at the fact that you have these stenciled things here to
19:17 make the screen look bigger than it really is.
19:20 But that's on everything.
19:21 I think even the GAC has that.
19:22 The GAC has it too.
19:24 But give respect that this is a really big center screen
19:28 and it's really easy to use.
19:30 You've got Android Auto, Apple CarPlay.
19:33 I've done multi-pane Android Auto so you have your navigation on half of that because it's so wide.
19:39 You can have half of this with your navigation, half of this with your entertainment, your music.
19:44 Here's the thing.
19:46 This thing actually has physical, well, haptic aircon control.
19:51 And it does have a hockey puck sort of gear selector.
19:57 And you have all these controls but there are no drive mode buttons.
20:00 You have to go into the menu here, go to vehicle settings, vehicle safety.
20:05 You're three or four modes in, you finally get to eco or sport.
20:09 So if you're relying on sport for a fast overtake, by the time you've engaged sport mode,
20:15 the guy you were going to overtake is gone.
20:17 Yeah.
20:18 He's turned off on the highway at the next exit.
20:21 It just takes too long to get there.
20:23 So that's why, you know, when we do our performance testing on these cars,
20:28 I think it's the same thing for the GAC.
20:30 Yeah, just stick it in normal.
20:31 You know, we stick it in normal because what use is a sport mode
20:35 if you can't get to it in less than half a second?
20:38 And here's another thing.
20:39 What was wrong with the button?
20:40 Yeah, exactly.
20:42 What was wrong with the button?
20:43 We have so many buttons here.
20:45 How hard would it be to reassign one of these buttons as a drive mode?
20:51 For me, in terms of ergonomics, if you shove everything in the screen,
20:54 it just adds another layer of complexity if you want to go around it.
20:59 To be fair, I mean, we have a lot of steering wheel controls here,
21:03 but the odd thing is the left-hand controls only do cruise.
21:08 And this is already reversed.
21:10 Most cars, cruise is on the right, and everything else is on the left.
21:13 But to do everything else, you have to switch the selector here between audio
21:19 and vehicle controls, and it gets kind of cumbersome.
21:22 Whereas on other cars, vehicle controls and cruise control,
21:26 or audio and cruise are on the same and the vehicle controls are on the other side.
21:30 So everything is done with the right-hand selector switch and you can mix it up.
21:36 So a couple of times, I've wanted to look at the fuel economy
21:39 and I accidentally turned on the radio.
21:42 Yeah.
21:43 It's kind of weird.
21:45 One good thing we have here is we have automatic parking.
21:49 Oh, yes.
21:50 So for the target market, which is basically families,
21:54 so sometimes daddy drives, sometimes mommy drives,
21:57 and sometimes your teenage kid who has the sense of a goldfish is driving.
22:03 And if your teenage kid is driving, you'll want them to use the auto parking.
22:08 It will help them park.
22:09 It's slow, but at least the kid won't curb your wheels.
22:14 Unless they really want to curb your wheels.
22:19 And with the tall sidewalls, even if they try, they might not.
22:22 Yeah.
22:22 So ergonomics, okay.
22:24 Mixed bag.
22:26 It's a mixed bag, especially like shoving everything here.
22:29 But I still appreciate the fact that there are buttons here.
22:33 So that is something.
22:34 And in terms of room, it's weird because there's more here outboard
22:42 but not where you're actually seated.
22:44 Where you're actually seated, yeah.
22:46 Right.
22:46 Okay, now in the MQ, I feel like I'm in the backseat this time of the Territory
22:53 because it feels much more spacious here.
22:55 You know, it's kind of weird.
22:56 Even though this dashboard does come closer to my knees,
22:59 I don't actually mind it because I've got more legroom, more footroom, and you know what?
23:04 I can actually reach into the center console.
23:06 Everything is sized properly so that everything is within reach but not pinching on you.
23:13 And there, okay, this is gonna sound weird but yes, I have high windowsills.
23:19 Yeah, that is high.
23:21 But I can see more of the car outward from the front.
23:26 Yeah, yeah.
23:27 That is weird.
23:28 I think the problem is that with the Ford, that hood is going up and over.
23:35 There's a little hump to the hood so even though you feel like you're sitting higher,
23:41 more of your view is taken up by the hood.
23:43 In terms of front space, I have to give it to the MQ.
23:46 However, in terms of ergonomics, there's a lot of quirks and features here
23:50 that'll catch a couple of people off guard.
23:52 So the mirror adjusters, for example, you're not gonna find them up here.
23:55 Would have been cool if it was like a pod up here but it's not.
23:59 It's like in the bottom half of the curved dash.
24:02 And from where you're sitting as a driver, you're not gonna find it.
24:05 So you're gonna have to dig around in here.
24:09 It's like, okay, there we go.
24:10 Oh, there's a car in front of me.
24:12 I have to slam on the brakes and you know, a couple more buttons down here.
24:15 So I don't know how else they're gonna do that.
24:20 I mean, as you mentioned, it would be ugly if they put the controls up here
24:24 but they're in this part of the dash that you just don't see.
24:27 Another thing is, okay, I want you to look for the rear defogger.
24:34 Well, you don't have an AC panel here.
24:38 You don't... okay, so I'm pretty sure it's on the screen.
24:43 Okay, so there's a... there's got to be an aircon screen here somewhere.
24:47 Settings, okay.
24:48 Wait, okay, there's an air... okay.
24:52 Oh, you turned it on?
24:54 I just turned on the air conditioner but I'm not in the aircon screen.
24:57 Okay, there you go.
24:59 I'm in the aircon screen and there's a rear defogger.
25:02 So I found it in less than 30 seconds.
25:05 Okay, give me that.
25:07 I found it in less than 30 seconds.
25:08 But what was wrong with just pressing a button?
25:11 Here we go again with why is everything in the touchscreen?
25:15 For some reason, the M Zoom, it has a bigger center console.
25:20 It also has physical buttons and you know, it still has good space in front.
25:26 For some reason, they were able to fit physical buttons,
25:28 a bigger cell phone pocket, and more cup holders in the same space.
25:34 I don't know.
25:34 And even in a smaller body.
25:36 In a smaller body, so yeah.
25:39 And another thing is like, okay, it's nice that at least you have AC controls here.
25:45 Although the 4 does it down here.
25:47 This one at least has some, you know, controls outside of the screen.
25:51 And at least you don't have to dig through the climate control system to adjust your temperature.
25:58 Oh, this is?
25:59 Yes, yes, yes, that toggle thing.
26:01 It lights!
26:03 Yeah, it does.
26:04 That is so...
26:05 Yeah, it turns blue if you're going cooler.
26:08 It turns red if you're going warmer.
26:10 From a designer point of view, I appreciate this.
26:13 This is probably the most gaudy and useless control I have ever seen but I love it.
26:20 This is like seeing iDrive for the first time.
26:26 It's like this is so useless but it's so cool.
26:29 So in terms of ergonomics, I'd put them around the same.
26:33 Yeah, yeah.
26:34 Because they have a lot of things and places and functions and buttons where you don't usually find them.
26:40 But at the same time, I...
26:43 Okay, in terms of ergonomics in here at the front in this space, I would probably give it to the MQ.
26:49 Okay, yeah, I'd agree.
26:51 Just because the driving and the driver and passenger position are much more comfortable.
26:58 Yes, yes, they are.
26:59 And you know, it's just a more pleasant place to be in.
27:02 So for the front seats at least, in terms of ergonomics, we're gonna have to give it to the GAC.
27:08 So in terms of the extra features, I'm actually loving your infotainment and display screen.
27:15 It just feels more vibrant, more colorful than the one on the other car.
27:19 Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like you have Android Auto.
27:25 You have CarPlay.
27:27 And CarBit Link but it does not have Android Auto.
27:30 But then again, I've used CarBit Link and dirty little secret, you can use CarBit Link to watch movies in traffic.
27:39 Not advisable when you're doing 100 kilometers on the highway.
27:42 You're not supposed to use it while driving but you can watch videos in this car and that is kind of fantastic.
27:50 Okay, alright.
27:51 So definitely a win for this one in terms of ergonomics and features at the front.
27:55 Alright, so now our final test.
28:00 Hmm, what is our final test?
28:02 Transition.
28:04 Right, our final test and we're not actually going to be driving because...
28:10 Yeah, it's the value for money test.
28:12 How much is yours?
28:15 1,335.
28:18 1.335 million.
28:20 Okay, this one in entry-level form is 1,295 but that is only a sort of a special promo price.
28:28 So that's only up to a limited time and probably by the time you read this,
28:32 you might have adjusted the pricing already.
28:34 But even before that, even before the price adjustment of this one and the base model,
28:39 it retailed for about 1.3 mil.
28:41 So they're about in the same ballpark.
28:43 They're in the same ballpark.
28:44 Okay, so most of the features are the same but what this does have over the base model of the MQ
28:51 is the 360-degree camera and the self-parking system.
28:55 Yeah, I don't get that even in the top spec model.
28:58 Yeah.
28:58 All right, so I'll give you the self-parking
29:01 but does the base territory have advanced driver assist systems?
29:06 No.
29:07 I mean, I have a plastic blank where my radar will go but I don't have the radar.
29:12 You have to spend almost 1.6 million for the Titanium X to get the level 2 driver assists.
29:19 Okay, this one even in its most entry-level form has it.
29:24 I can hear some of the readers complaining already.
29:27 Well, you don't need those unless you're on the highway.
29:29 They would say, "I'm driving in traffic or in the city most of the time so
29:34 you know the 360-degree camera and the self-parking are more important to me."
29:39 But I will give you that autonomous emergency braking in traffic.
29:42 Oh yes, absolutely.
29:43 It's something that you want to have.
29:46 This one, it will beep at you.
29:48 It will chatter at you if a motorcycle swipes across your bow but it won't brake for you.
29:54 So you will hear it but you're reliant upon your reaction to avoid a motorcycle.
29:59 This one will actually do it for you.
30:01 So I'll give it that.
30:03 So I'd like to say that for family use that the extra features here would be better for
30:10 like your teenage driver not to curb your wheels but for your teenage driver not to
30:16 hit a pedestrian or a cyclist, that is a really big thing.
30:20 So I'll give you that.
30:21 I'd like to say 50/50 but maybe the AEB will push that over the edge.
30:26 Yeah.
30:27 Oh another thing, it also has pedestrian and the cyclist detection.
30:31 This thing.
30:31 Oh that is something.
30:33 Yeah.
30:34 So that is that's a pretty huge deal and let's say even if they're the same price,
30:38 this just has more stuff in it.
30:41 There's kind of no denying that.
30:44 Yeah, but you know I'd say that maybe we could talk about the extra space here
30:51 since this is a family car comparison.
30:53 Yeah.
30:53 You know if we're talking value for money, that extra space is value for money.
30:57 I know we did count it when we checked out the backseat and the cargo space but
31:01 you know we're talking about family cars so at $1,335,000 you're spending an extra
31:07 $35,000 to $40,000.
31:09 You do get extra space for that.
31:12 Subjectively, if you look at the interior and even the exterior, you look at the fit
31:16 and finish of these cars, you do get sort of the feeling that GAC has paid more attention
31:22 to how the car is built than the 4J-MC.
31:27 With the GAC, it's just a big car from the start.
31:30 They engineered a chassis that the car fits around exactly.
31:34 So I'll give you that.
31:36 Maybe if we're talking interior and exterior fit and finish and just the way the car is
31:41 engineered, that has the edge.
31:44 So I don't know, I'm still of two minds about it because I'm thinking family cars
31:48 but judging from what we see or how everything feels, value for money, maybe I'll give it
31:56 to the GAC.
31:57 I guess, you know, just about.
32:00 Yeah, I'd tip it in the favor of the GAC as well.
32:05 So in our points tally, the GAC is won acceleration, braking, fuel consumption,
32:13 and value for money.
32:14 This one is won cargo space, backseat, maneuverability, surprisingly even though this has the taller
32:22 hood but that's about it.
32:24 Yeah, that's true.
32:26 But here's the thing, guys.
32:28 Yes, the GAC wins mathematically but I'm gonna put myself out on a limb here because
32:34 I do enjoy driving this but when it comes to doing family stuff, it's the Territory.
32:43 Just because they give you more space, more family-caring capabilities than your regular
32:48 crossover.
32:49 Now this is not a PPV.
32:51 Clearly.
32:52 Definitely not a PPV but this sort of encapsulates the same formula.
32:56 This does not drive like a modern sporty crossover.
33:01 This does not drive like a modern car.
33:03 In fact, this actually drives like a PPV and it feels like a PPV and it has the same
33:10 attributes.
33:11 It's soft riding, it's big inside, and it does the family duty pretty well.
33:16 So if we were looking at this purely from the point of view of the family man, this
33:22 should win.
33:23 It doesn't win mathematically.
33:25 Yeah, but this is the weird thing about big tests, right?
33:29 So you've driven both cars and whatnot.
33:31 You know what?
33:34 This is a car that you choose with your head.
33:38 This is a car that while it has some practicalities, this is the one you buy because it just looks
33:44 cool.
33:45 Yes, definitely.
33:47 This is the choice between the Cheese Grater and the Gillette Racer.
33:52 Yes, and that perfectly sums up this big test.
33:56 Now the JC MQ is the winner but we think this is the better family car.
34:01 We hope that didn't confuse you even further.
34:04 This has been Anton.
34:05 And this is Niki.
34:06 And this has been The Big Test.
34:08 See, we told you the winner's from China.
