A man with a facial disfiguration was left "disheartened" after AI recognition software failed to recognise him.

Amit Ghose, 33, was born with neurofibromatosis type 1, a condition that causes tumours to grown along nerves.

He lost his left eye when he was 11 and wore an eye patch while waiting for a prosthetic eye, leading to bullying at school.

But despite those challenges, Amit says he's "always" embraced his disfigurement and has a "positive personality".

00:03 My name's Amit Ghosh.

00:09 I have grown up living with neurofibromatosis type 1,
00:13 which has affected my left face.
00:16 I've grown up with a lot of challenges,
00:18 a lot of people judging you for the way you look,
00:22 a lot of people making assumptions
00:24 about what I can and can't do.
00:27 But ultimately, I've embraced who I am, I celebrate who I am.
00:31 I wanted to share with you an interesting incident that
00:35 happened with me, which raises a lot of questions about where
00:38 AI and technology is moving now.
00:41 I recently was asked to do a face verification
00:44 on an application.
00:47 And the application just wouldn't recognize my face.
00:52 It raised questions about my confidence and my ability
00:56 to celebrate who I am.
01:00 My immediate concern is that there's
01:02 so many millions of people out there
01:04 who have facial deformity, disfigurement,
01:07 who are going to be subjected to these verifications
01:10 on these applications.
01:13 These applications need to evolve.
01:15 Discrimination can happen at all levels.
01:16 It can happen on a level of AI as well.
01:19 I felt like this application did discriminate me.
01:22 Something needs to be done about it.
01:24 I hope to inspire others with my story.
