Highlights from stage five of the Tour of Britain 2023, held in and around Felixstowe on Thursday 7 September.
Transcript
00:00 Stage 5 in Suffolk and again in bright sunshine and another opportunity for Olaf Koi and Jumbo
00:09 Visma potentially to do something very rare indeed and that is win five consecutive stages
00:16 of a stage race and who would bet against them.
00:19 In the white jersey then the man who won, ran the race leader Olaf Koi very close Kasper
00:25 van Ouden and alongside him Harry Tanfield and Ethan Vernon in conversation as the race
00:30 got underway from Felixstowe and out onto 192.4 looping kilometres all the way through
00:37 Suffolk and returning to Felixstowe and a finish along the seafront.
00:42 When the flag dropped at kilometre zero the attacks came from the usual suspects Kern
00:46 Farmer trying to get in a move as ever TDT Unibet trying to get up the road, St Pirren
00:52 opting to attack this time with Harry Birchall who moved off the front and a counter attack
00:56 coming from Q36.5 among other teams trying to get in the breakaway.
01:02 Eventually a five man move did get up the road but Nathan van Heudenkant and Jumbo Visma
01:07 very attentive to the composition of the breakaway.
01:11 James Fouché also alert to the prospects of getting up the road and scooping up more
01:15 King of the Mountains points in the black jersey but Bora Hansgrohe were determined to
01:19 make life difficult for Jumbo Visma although Edie Schelling having attacked managed to
01:24 neutralise his own attack by taking the wrong turning when he should have gone straight
01:28 on.
01:29 Bora Hansgrohe then with three of their team at least launching offensive after offensive.
01:34 They were joined at times as well by Uno X trying to disrupt the natural authority of
01:39 Jumbo Visma in the opening 25 kilometres of today's race.
01:43 James Fouché did get himself in a breakaway and meanwhile that break, that five man move
01:49 was threatened by the fact that Bora Hansgrohe were persisting with their tactics joined
01:53 as I say by Uno X which kept the break very close indeed and eventually that five man
01:58 move featuring James Fouché was caught as they approached the first categorised climb
02:03 of the day.
02:04 It did come back together again.
02:06 The first categorised climb was a Cat 3 climb at Freston and when they hit the line James
02:12 Fouché at a calmer moment in the race managed to just dart off the front, was allowed to
02:17 pick up four more points for another Cat 3 climb.
02:22 Thereafter the attacks continued as they picked off the villages and eventually a three man
02:27 move went clear with Abraham Stockmann for a second successive day from TDT Unibet along
02:33 with Joey Roscoff the American of 36.5 and Callum Ormiston in the second breakaway of
02:38 the Tour of Britain.
02:39 They went through the second categorised climb of Holbrook and then they went through Hadley
02:45 as a trio of riders with Abraham Stockmann scooping up the remaining King of the Mountains
02:50 points and indeed the intermediate sprint at Hadley.
02:54 Some absolutely stunning scenery along the way as they crisscrossed the River Orwell
02:59 and Deben and headed through Suffolk and back in towards Felixstowe with the breakaway now
03:04 coming under pressure from Jumbo Visma who were riding them down.
03:07 Callum Ormiston the first of the three riders to give up and get swept up by Steven Kruijswijk
03:11 and Jos van Emden doing their accustomed role of setting the pace and keeping the break
03:15 close.
03:16 Then Joey Roscoff attacked Abraham Stockmann when he detected a moment of weakness and
03:20 the gap was around about 10 seconds.
03:22 He built up an advantage of a solo for this solo attack of around about 17 seconds before
03:27 eventually he too was reeled in and on the run into Felixstowe one or two riders just
03:32 come into grief as the road narrows but no serious crashes.
03:36 Jumbo Visma then a few kilometers from the finish line completely the wrong line around
03:42 that traffic island dropped them to the back of the bunch where Olaf Koy and Wout van Aert
03:47 had to calmly reassert themselves towards the front as they approached the final kilometer
03:52 of racing.
03:53 With Bolton Equities, Blacksmoke and Uno X in control as well as Trinity Racing with
03:57 a strong showing Jumbo Visma were nowhere to be seen as they approached Felixstowe
04:02 but then suddenly appeared at the front just when they needed to.
04:05 Nathan van Goydonk with Eduardo Affini on his wheel then Wout van Aert and Olaf Koy
04:09 in firm control of the race as they approached one kilometer to go.
04:14 Affini then released Wout van Aert eventually with the Ineos Grenadiers on the coattails
04:19 of the race leader Olaf Koy and it was at that moment that van Aert then pulled off
04:24 a surprise tactic.
04:26 One corner to go he attacked and held on for 900 meters to take a solo win that was unanswerable
04:32 and brilliant.
04:33 It was Ethan Vernon winning the sprint for second place but Wout van Aert taking a solo
04:37 win with a three second time gap ahead of Vernon, Kanta, Koy etc. and that's the general
04:44 classification after stage five.
04:46 Van Aert the 2021 winner leads by three seconds to Ethan Vernon from Great Britain.
