00:00 Citizens of the Reject Nation, we are here for what is easily one of my most anticipated shows of the year.
00:06 We are starting up the Ahsoka series.
00:08 Yes.
00:09 Use the force to leave the like button.
00:12 And John, how are you?
00:13 I so can't wait to see what this show is like.
00:16 I so can't wait to see what the show is like, man.
00:19 And Michael, who literally just got back from a flight.
00:23 He is our Star Wars expert and didn't want to start this without him.
00:25 Thank you for readjusting your flight plans.
00:27 I would not miss it for the world.
00:29 You did like a whole rewatch, whole reread.
00:31 I did a lot of rewatching and a lot of...
00:33 That's like first time reading.
00:34 I learned how to read for this.
00:35 I read the Thread of Books.
00:36 It was my first book I ever got through.
00:38 So this was an exciting thing for me.
00:40 Well, before we go into this, we got a word from a Grand Admiral sponsor.
00:44 Hey guys, as many of you all know, I'm a big fan of G Fuel.
00:47 I love me some G Fuel.
00:50 And here's the thing.
00:51 Sometimes when you get re-upped with a brand, most of the time, they will offer you a little bit more moolah, a little bit more money.
00:58 Because they're like, wow, you've been getting so many conversions.
01:01 You've been encouraging that audience to go get some more G Fuel.
01:04 We're going to pay you a little bit more money.
01:06 That's not how it operates around here.
01:08 What I've decided instead was, you don't need to pay me more money.
01:12 Just send me a lot more G Fuel.
01:15 And so that's exactly what they did.
01:18 [Music]
01:28 There we go, people.
01:30 Come in here.
01:31 And I still got this much left to fill in for G Fuel.
01:37 Use our code "REJECTS" to get yourself 20% off select tubs.
01:42 This is all mine.
01:43 I'm not sharing this with anyone.
01:47 Oh, yeah.
01:47 I totally forgot to mention, full length "Threads From Watch Along" re-single with your own copy of "Ahsoka" series.
01:50 That's going to be available for our SuperSexyRejects.
01:52 Got our Patreon.
01:53 But because this is the first episode, it's available for the entire public.
01:55 Link in the description box and pinned comment, so you can go choose that option if you prefer.
02:00 Let's get into it.
02:01 [Music]
02:04 Oh, samurai music.
02:07 Boy, oh boy.
02:07 [Music]
02:14 This is refreshing.
02:16 A crawl?
02:17 Nice.
02:19 The evil Galactic Empire has fallen and a new Republic has taken it to its place.
02:23 However, sinister agents are already at work to undermine the fragile peace.
02:27 A plot is underway to find the lost Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn and bring him out of exile.
02:33 Once presumed dead, rumors are spreading of Thrawn's return, which would galvanize the Imperial remnants and start another war.
02:40 Former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano captured one of Thrawn's allies and learned of a secret map, which is vital to the enemy's plans.
02:49 Ahsoka now searches for the map as her prisoner, Morgan Elsbeth, is transported to the new Republic for trial.
02:57 I'm surprised none of us did the Clone Wars voice.
02:59 Last time on Star Wars!
03:02 Okay, that's the new Republic cruiser.
03:05 So Elsbeth is her prisoner, huh?
03:07 I mean, what else are you going to do with her after weapon her in a duel?
03:11 Ask them to identify themselves and transmit their clearance code.
03:15 Yes, sir.
03:17 Yo, the music is great so far.
03:19 Yeah, this is phenomenal.
03:20 Do you know who did it?
03:21 I'm not sure.
03:21 They're Jedi.
03:23 They?
03:24 Say again?
03:25 The signal is an old Jedi clearance code.
03:29 I want to meet these Jedi.
03:31 Oh boy.
03:32 I've got a bad feeling about this.
03:39 I like how the pacing feels like it's taking its time already.
03:42 It's just so cinematic already compared to everything else.
03:44 I wish it felt more like a cartoon.
03:51 Oh, okay.
03:54 Ruh-roh.
03:54 Quite a surprise meeting Jedi out here.
03:57 Our existence remains a mystery to most, Captain Hale.
04:01 That's like Qui-Gon vibes.
04:02 I don't understand.
04:04 You're no Jedi.
04:06 No, they're not.
04:06 Should have surrendered when the Empire collapsed.
04:09 Get RD-3 to scan these impostors for identification.
04:12 You're all dead.
04:15 Oh boy.
04:18 There's the orange.
04:23 No.
04:23 Oh, no.
04:28 You're right about one thing, Captain.
04:29 I'm no Jedi.
04:30 We are no Jedi.
04:31 Oh, so close.
04:37 It feels like a reversal on Phantom Menace, doesn't it?
04:39 Exactly, yeah.
04:40 It rhymes with poetry.
04:46 Awesome.
04:47 Lady got to fight a lady.
04:52 Kill them.
04:54 Oh, sick.
04:55 Oh, it's like mirroring the Darth Vader hallway.
04:57 Whoa.
04:59 Yes.
05:05 Wow, what an introduction.
05:06 Yeah, he's menacing.
05:10 Borgen.
05:13 She looks more like a witch of Dathomir more than ever right now, doesn't she?
05:16 Yeah, right.
05:16 She sure does.
05:17 The Jedi who captured me seeks the map.
05:20 Who is this Jedi?
05:21 Ahsoka Tano.
05:23 Goddamn right.
05:24 Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.
05:27 Let's see it.
05:27 Title?
05:28 Title card, come on.
05:29 Yes.
05:30 Love it.
05:31 It's carrying over that Western vibe.
05:33 It does feel like that episode of Forrest season 2 was the pilot for this.
05:37 Master and Apprentice part 1 instead of chapter 1.
05:40 Love it.
05:42 Where are we?
05:45 Denver, Colorado.
05:51 Oh, here we go.
05:57 The glyphs kind of look like some stuff from Fallen Order.
06:04 Yes.
06:10 Awesome, awesome.
06:13 She didn't even need to do that.
06:14 The most badass thing I can do right now.
06:15 She could have just easily used her hands.
06:17 She's like, I'm going to do this so badass.
06:20 Okay.
06:20 The golden snitch.
06:25 You're a Jedi, Ahsoka.
06:30 Getting some World Between Worlds vibes right now.
06:38 Giant boulder is going to chase her out of there.
06:40 I know it.
06:41 Yeah, put the bag of sand on top.
06:45 I think she just really likes this rock.
06:47 I've never been more jealous of a rock.
06:54 That was actually a really cool subtle way of using the Force.
07:02 Sick.
07:06 I really love how deliberate this is so far.
07:08 Watching her study the room.
07:10 Also after playing Jedi Survivor for like a thousand hours, it's nice to see somebody else have to solve a puzzle for once.
07:17 The fifth element.
07:26 I love this foreboding music.
07:35 Who did this score?
07:36 There really is that swashbuckling vibe.
07:45 Where's Omega when you finally find the treasure?
07:50 Hu-Yang?
07:53 She's already in contact with him?
07:54 Wonder if she's the one that kept him safe.
07:59 Hear the crackle of Tenen's voice.
08:04 Oh, here we go.
08:06 Hello there.
08:11 The map. Give it to us.
08:15 Sounds exactly like Kyla.
08:16 Us.
08:20 It does sound exactly like Kyla.
08:27 Give a droid a cape.
08:27 It is the coolest thing.
08:32 I have two phallic objects.
08:38 Kick her ass, Ahsoka!
08:42 She just falls in that climax.
08:51 Don't even waste her time.
08:56 Yes.
08:57 Yeah.
09:03 Head turn.
09:06 Wow, this is like playing Jedi Survivor.
09:08 Yes.
09:09 Thump.
09:16 Got a blast.
09:17 Okay.
09:17 Are they gonna blow this whole the ruins?
09:24 Great shot.
09:26 Holy shit.
09:27 This looks great.
09:29 Man.
09:36 Damn.
09:40 Nepal chills everywhere.
09:45 Do the Jedi leap.
09:46 He.
09:50 Wow.
09:51 Damn.
09:53 Destroyer of worlds.
09:54 Hu-Yang.
09:57 Good thing I arrived when I did.
09:59 Watch my back.
10:00 That is the job of a Jedi Padawan learner.
10:03 Which I am not.
10:06 Which you have been.
10:07 Right where Morgan said it would be.
10:11 How did you get her to tell the truth?
10:12 Because Morgan wanted to snatch it from you.
10:14 I didn't follow standard Jedi protocol.
10:18 Torture.
10:19 Fulcrum, this is Home One.
10:20 Do you copy?
10:21 Fulcrum.
10:23 Over.
10:24 Aye.
10:24 Copy.
10:25 Incoming transmission, priority one.
10:27 She still goes by Colt Fulcrum?
10:28 It sounds like he's going by Fulcrum.
10:30 He's going by Hu-Yang, he's going by Fulcrum.
10:32 You're cleared for approach.
10:33 Hangar two nine, over.
10:35 Affirmative.
10:37 T-6 out.
10:38 This is already better to me than Mandalorian season three.
10:43 I'm also excited to finally have some good portrayal of the New Republic.
10:47 Because it's been, meh.
10:50 They did not put their dollars to waste on this one.
10:53 No, they did not.
10:53 The visual effects team did an excellent job on this show.
10:56 I mean, I feel like I'm watching a movie.
10:58 Hera!
10:59 Hera Sandula!
11:03 She looks awesome.
11:03 General Sandula.
11:06 It's good to see you.
11:07 I could cry.
11:08 I'm afraid we've lost your prisoner.
11:10 I prepared a briefing to get you caught up.
11:12 Just like old times.
11:15 I wonder if we're going to see the little baby.
11:17 Chase?
11:18 Who are they?
11:22 So much of that.
11:23 They seem to have abilities like you.
11:27 Pose.
11:28 What a freeze frame.
11:28 Perhaps one of them was once a Jedi.
11:31 Possibly.
11:33 Huh.
11:34 I'm going to guess Baelin was once a Jedi and then she was the apprentice.
11:37 That makes sense by the rage.
11:39 This old man needed a mentor.
11:42 Star map?
11:44 Not just any star map.
11:46 This one holds the secret Morgan's after.
11:48 Look at the symbol.
11:49 Yep.
11:49 The last missing Imperial Grand Admiral.
11:52 Thrawn.
11:53 Which can get them to Bridger.
11:54 I started hearing whispers of his return which led me to Morgan.
11:58 Thrawn returned somehow.
12:00 And the secret is held in that map.
12:06 We're shooting this during the storm.
12:07 We're having a little bit of an earthquake right now.
12:08 Yep.
12:09 Rolling.
12:11 Hurricane, earthquake.
12:14 Nothing is certain.
12:16 Except our enemies believe that they know where to look.
12:23 Whoa.
12:24 This reaction is more like Star Wars than anything.
12:27 We're floating in actual Earth.
12:30 Disney plus plus.
12:31 You know who can help you with this?
12:36 I do.
12:37 Go to Sabine.
12:38 I'm not sure she'll want to help.
12:43 She'll do it.
12:44 Make her.
12:45 For Ezra.
12:49 Gosh.
12:50 I still can't believe that this is real life.
12:53 Oh, sick.
12:54 Look at it go.
12:57 It's a true metropolis now.
12:58 The Empire was defeated.
13:01 Thanks to the heroic efforts of Commander Ezra Bridger.
13:04 Dude, no way.
13:05 They got him.
13:06 Did they get him to play Ryder again?
13:07 This monument we dedicate here today stands in recognition.
13:12 May their courage and commitment never be forgotten.
13:15 That's extraordinary.
13:16 Tell me he's playing Ryder.
13:17 Here to say a few words is one of those rebel leaders.
13:21 Commander Sabine Wren.
13:23 Got the mural behind the man.
13:24 Yo.
13:26 This feels like rebels.
13:31 Sabine Wren.
13:41 Find her now.
13:43 And destroy her.
13:44 Oh, my gosh.
13:50 That's gnarly.
13:51 It just brought it to life.
13:53 All right.
13:54 For those that don't know Sabine Wren, this is a great introduction right here.
14:01 That is awesome.
14:03 Oh, man.
14:04 They literally brought the bridge to life.
14:13 It's like the opening of that JJ Abrams Star Trek movie.
14:18 James Tiberius Kirk.
14:19 Governor Zaddy's looking for you.
14:20 Oh, yeah?
14:22 Why's that?
14:23 You're missing a ceremony.
14:25 Oh, that was today.
14:33 Man, amazing.
14:35 I can't believe they brought this to life.
14:37 They spared no expense.
14:43 Look at the love cat on her helmet.
14:47 What is this song?
14:48 I think it's new.
14:50 Commander, stand down.
14:51 Sabine?
14:52 Is she going to stop?
14:55 Nope.
14:56 Nope.
14:57 Stand down.
14:58 She's not stopping.
14:59 She's crazy.
15:00 Doesn't even look like her pulse is raising.
15:11 Whoa.
15:13 Woo!
15:15 Boy, oh boy.
15:18 Wow.
15:26 Game recognized game.
15:32 It must be that punk band from the visions episode.
15:42 Do you think we'll see a lothwolf in here?
15:44 Oh, God, I hope so.
15:51 New merchandise unlocked.
15:56 Already got mine on pre-order.
16:03 Everyone's looking to adopt a cat.
16:04 We're fostering five right now.
16:13 Nice little subtle -- it's interesting how she's become like a full-on --
16:17 like there's a dissonance.
16:19 Well, I can't imagine it would be easier for her to confront what happened on Mandalore,
16:24 what happened to her friends.
16:28 Damn, that was real.
16:29 Little animatronic.
16:30 Hey, Sabine, I made this recording because more than the others, I need you to understand.
16:36 He left her a separate recording.
16:38 We've been through a lot.
16:39 Grew up together in this rebellion.
16:42 We're not really family, but you're like a sister to me.
16:47 That's a change of tone.
16:48 Now I won't be there to help you, but I'm counting on you to see this through.
16:53 May the force be with you.
16:54 May the force be with you.
16:55 See what through.
16:56 I mean, I imagine it helping to get back to Mandalore.
16:59 That didn't quite pan out.
17:01 No.
17:02 Imagine her whole family was killed.
17:07 She reminds me of just about everybody I know in LA.
17:10 Galadriel.
17:11 She has a lot of presence, though, man.
17:13 An ancient temple built by my ancestors.
17:17 Who?
17:18 The Nightsisters of Dathomir.
17:19 The Nightsisters of Dathomir confirmed it!
17:22 They confirmed it!
17:23 You're a witch.
17:25 Yes, she is.
17:27 Burn her!
17:28 A survivor.
17:32 Yeah, most of them were eradicated.
17:34 Either the Jedi has the map, or it was vaporized.
17:38 No.
17:39 She has it.
17:40 Well, if she does, you're lucky.
17:41 Luck has nothing to do with it.
17:43 Fate has decided our next move.
17:46 Then it's lucky fate would do that.
17:48 Send this one to the planet Lothal.
17:50 Retrieve it.
17:52 She can anticipate that Ahsoka would go to Sabine.
17:54 Ahsoka Tano's former apprentice is on Lothal.
17:56 You're looking for Sabine Wren.
17:58 He knows a little too much.
18:03 But how?
18:04 I mean, maybe he knew Ahsoka when he was like, once part of the Jedi Order.
18:08 Yeah, or a youngling or something.
18:10 I love this set design.
18:13 This is very transportive.
18:18 I hear the darksaber.
18:19 [DARKSABER]
18:21 Ezra.
18:22 Was it just a dream?
18:25 Is she connecting via the Force?
18:27 It was heavily implied that she was Force-sensitive.
18:29 You're going to piss off the world by saying that.
18:31 I mean, to wield the darksaber the way she did?
18:33 To be the apprentice of Ahsoka Tano?
18:35 Maybe she might be.
18:37 This is an interesting parallel, because Ahsoka and Sabine, you know, master and apprentice.
18:43 But Baelin is master and apprentice, and they like get along, and there's such a distance between these two.
18:47 So it is telling a parallel between them.
18:49 This makes me so happy.
19:02 I know.
19:03 Shibethesius.
19:11 Oh, they're all looking at each other.
19:16 I'll be on the ship.
19:17 I think there is some additional stuff that we might not know about between these two.
19:21 Of course.
19:22 I will handle the tension.
19:27 You're going to want to hear what she has to say.
19:31 It's cool that he gets to play two live-action characters now in the Star Wars show.
19:36 That's pretty amazing, right?
19:41 This music is so transportive.
19:43 It is quite moving, I've got to say.
19:46 It really does help bolster the visual language.
19:50 I think I know how to find Ezra.
19:51 Chimes.
19:56 You hear some of that familiar Star Wars tunes.
20:02 Hope rising.
20:07 I wonder if when at the end of Rebels, she arrived at the White Staff, that's already come and gone and some things happened after that.
20:15 I'm pretty sure that's what's going on, yeah.
20:17 Oh, you thought this might have been an in-between then?
20:19 I thought this might have been that exact moment, and just a little retcon on how they do it.
20:23 Oh, Chopper.
20:26 Oh, I read so much Dathomir.
20:34 You have the artist's eye? Tell me what you see.
20:37 Who?
20:44 There's such tension between them.
20:46 Where do you call home these days?
20:48 This ship serves me fine.
20:52 The bed with Hu Ying.
20:53 Lightsabers aren't the only thing he can build.
20:58 You never made things easy for me, Master.
21:02 Oh.
21:04 Clarify what that means.
21:06 There is nothing easy about being a Jedi.
21:08 So was training her to be a Jedi.
21:10 Then I should have made a good one.
21:12 She just blocks herself.
21:13 How her world got destroyed during her training.
21:15 I think she blocks herself off from the Force.
21:17 Yeah.
21:18 From her stubbornness, and I think by the end of the show, the Force will be unleashed.
21:22 Good.
21:23 Can I take this?
21:24 Where are you going?
21:26 That's not good.
21:27 Somewhere I can think more clearly.
21:30 I'm not sure that's a good idea.
21:32 That's a terrible idea.
21:33 Why?
21:36 This isn't just about finding Ezra.
21:41 It's about preventing another war.
21:43 You think I don't know that?
21:44 The map stays here.
21:47 No, it's not going to stay.
21:51 Okay.
21:55 I love that Ahsoka has to deal with an apprentice who is just as stubborn and frustrating as she was.
22:01 Can't hold a mirror to herself.
22:03 I think sometimes it's harder to train the one that's so similar to you.
22:05 Construction and overall design are executed exactly the way I taught younglings to build a lightsaber.
22:12 Oh, shit.
22:14 In the last 500 years, I've only known one student who built a saber such as this.
22:21 Damn.
22:22 He disappeared at the end of the Clone Wars.
22:25 Like so many Jedi.
22:27 Order 66 survivor.
22:29 Master and an apprentice.
22:31 That would be my assumption.
22:33 He took on an apprentice after that?
22:35 Interesting.
22:36 That's interesting because they're not exactly Sith.
22:38 Some type of in-between.
22:39 Some type of grey Jedi.
22:42 Every time we say grey Jedi, something awful happens to Star Wars content.
22:50 Should we get this video dive-bombed?
22:52 No, shit.
22:54 They're going to go right after Sabine.
22:56 And she would totally lose that fight.
23:00 This is going to be like Qui-Gon on his way back to the ship on Tatooine with Darth Maul.
23:05 Literally exactly like it.
23:12 Probe droid and everything.
23:13 It is poetry.
23:14 I mean, Filoni loves Phantom Menace.
23:16 He sure does.
23:19 This is the shot with Darth Maul.
23:21 Exactly the same thing.
23:23 Whoa, good reveal.
23:33 Dang.
23:34 I love how storyboarded this feels.
23:36 You can really feel that animation.
23:38 Every shot is composed.
23:41 It's interesting that the way they've composed this because even if you haven't seen Rebels,
23:47 I think they do that John Wick hinting at history thing where you can still keep up.
23:51 Clearly.
23:54 I'm not really that lost.
23:58 Come on Ahsoka.
24:06 Give it eight episodes.
24:16 Things didn't turn out the way either of us wanted.
24:18 This is not going to go the way you think.
24:22 Ah!
24:28 Too soon.
24:34 It's always too soon.
24:35 Watch from the old Jedi Order.
24:44 Aw, he looks so sad.
24:46 You have commitment problems.
24:50 Poignant.
24:56 I feel like she has every reason to fear mistraining an apprentice after her master became, you know.
25:02 Hey, there you go.
25:05 It's a Rubik's Cube.
25:11 Rubik's Cube.
25:12 Oh!
25:18 And it has three faces.
25:27 Ah, sick.
25:28 Wow, they're doing this all in one shot.
25:36 That is so cool.
25:37 That is so cool.
25:38 So cool.
25:39 So cool.
25:40 (Laughter)
25:41 Yo.
25:44 Oh, and this is right when that girl's going to show up.
25:48 Naturally.
25:49 Whoa.
25:51 He's right there.
25:54 Interestingly enough, that looked like a different galaxy.
25:56 A galaxy farther away.
25:58 Oh no.
26:03 They're going to take it.
26:04 They're going to take the Loth-Cat.
26:06 Oh, dang it.
26:10 He's sneaky.
26:11 Ah, kick its ass.
26:16 Ooh.
26:20 Ow, how do your elbows handle that?
26:23 (Laughter)
26:24 Smashing into metal.
26:26 Oh, my God.
26:29 Oh, God.
26:30 Ooh.
26:37 Smart.
26:38 Okay, I need backup now.
26:39 They're still talking.
26:44 Helmet, helmet.
26:46 Do it.
26:47 No, lightsaber.
26:50 Yo.
26:51 Yeah, the green lightsaber.
26:52 Yeah.
26:53 She's going to totally lose this fight, though.
26:58 We've been looking for this.
27:00 That's too bad.
27:03 She's going to get owned.
27:07 She's going to get owned.
27:08 This feels like a samurai duel.
27:14 What about Star Wars has any weapons?
27:21 Samurai?
27:22 Ooh.
27:23 All right.
27:24 This fight does feel kind of like Kendo.
27:33 I like how Filoni doesn't adopt the prequel fighting.
27:36 (Laughter)
27:37 Ooh.
27:43 Oh, she is.
27:44 They're both just trying to study each other.
27:45 Ooh, dang.
27:48 Oh, there it is.
27:51 There it is.
27:52 Okay.
27:53 Ah, she's just toying with Sabine.
27:58 That's exactly it.
28:01 Yeah.
28:04 Oh, so we're just going to have a speed right now.
28:05 Whoa.
28:08 So many badass cross saber shots.
28:09 Yikes.
28:12 There.
28:17 I see them.
28:18 This is literally Phantom Menace.
28:19 I feel like Sabine's going to get stabbed.
28:20 Did he lose a limb?
28:25 Ooh.
28:28 Come on.
28:31 He's stoned.
28:33 He's stoned.
28:34 Oh, yeah.
28:35 Whoa.
28:40 Woof.
28:46 Wow.
28:48 And then they killed off Sabine Wren.
28:50 She did not return somehow.
28:55 Aw.
28:58 Aw.
28:59 (Applause)
29:00 Very present.
29:03 Yeah.
29:05 Well done, Dana E. Globerman.
29:06 Kevin Kiner.
29:08 He did Rebels.
29:10 Sure did.
29:11 Wowee.
29:12 That makes a lot of sense.
29:14 Oh, it's the Purrgil.
29:15 This is the first time in a long time that Star Wars visual effects and television is --
29:18 Doesn't feel like it's just on a volume.
29:20 That's exactly it.
29:22 No, this felt -- I was immersed.
29:24 Yeah.
29:27 Like, they probably did do a lot of volume, but they sold it really well.
29:30 Oh, yeah.
29:31 With physical elements.
29:32 Yeah, I genuinely loved that.
29:34 I was in love with that.
29:36 He played Ryder, right?
29:38 Yeah.
29:40 Okay.
29:41 That's so cool.
29:42 Okay, for you guys who don't know, Clancy Brown played Ryder in Star Wars Rebels, and
29:46 to see him get to actually -- because everyone else has been recast, right?
29:50 Everyone else.
29:52 Yeah.
29:53 Except for, like, Tenet as Hu Yang.
29:54 And Chopper.
29:55 And Chopper.
29:56 And Chopper.
29:57 But to see him pop back up after he already was in Mandalorian as -- it was in that Bill
30:05 Burr episode as one of the villains.
30:06 Oh, yeah.
30:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:09 And I think that was the Rick Famuyiwa episode of season one.
30:11 Wow, that was a great episode, too.
30:13 Yeah, and he's one of the most prolific voice actors out there.
30:16 He's just a great, like, real-life actor, too.
30:18 So it's so cool to see him actually get to play Ryder.
30:20 Yeah, that translated so well.
30:23 And there's just so many beautiful little touches.
30:26 The time spent on Lothal and just seeing that come to life, I mean, it really was -- they
30:32 captured it perfectly.
30:34 Yeah, I loved how meditative this was and how -- like, it was emotional yet cold, you
30:43 know?
30:45 And I think they're going to be arcing into something that does feel either more hopeful
30:50 or more harrowing.
30:52 I really don't know which direction it'll go.
30:53 Because it's supposed to be setting up some stuff, right, for whatever that Filoni crossover
30:59 movie --
31:01 Filoniverse.
31:02 Filoniverse, which is what this is.
31:03 And this is the first time Filoni got to actually helm the pilot, like, literally setting the
31:07 stage for everything that's to come.
31:09 And while I thought that episode of Mandalorian, season two, which reintroduced Ahsoka, that
31:15 felt like the backdoor pilot for this in every way, considering that you got Elisabeth that
31:20 you're picking up with right away, the confirmation that she's a witch of Dathomir, who -- if
31:24 you guys, like, play Jedi Fallen Order, or, you know, obviously Clone Wars, you'd be familiar
31:28 with her.
31:30 It's the planet where Darth Maul was from.
31:31 And then --
31:33 And Savage.
31:35 Savage Ventress.
31:37 Opress?
31:39 No, Savage -- oh, wait, no, wait.
31:40 Savage Opress.
31:42 And Ventress.
31:44 And Ventress, yeah.
31:45 Oh, Savage, yeah, I got my name.
31:47 Savage, the ill-fated brother of Darth Maul.
31:49 Yeah, they really --
31:50 A-Sage Ventress.
31:52 Yeah, that's where I got confused, yeah.
31:54 A-Sage.
31:56 There's a lot of names out there.
31:58 There are a couple names in Star Wars.
32:00 But I loved it, man.
32:02 I thought this was the right tone, and this is what I hoped it would be.
32:05 I do wonder if some people might find it boring, though, you know, if there -- I think there
32:12 can be a bit of a -- because it's weird.
32:16 I'm excited to hear what you think, because --
32:18 He doesn't care what I think.
32:20 I know.
32:22 I think it would be really easy for us to get wrapped up in, like, Rebels talk and all that stuff.
32:27 So, whereas, if a lot of people didn't see Rebels, I wonder if it would be felt that they'd be left at a distance, you know?
32:36 But, so, yeah, what did you think so far, Michael?
32:41 Well, interestingly enough, I feel like these first two episodes are likely going to be the most of the feeding that, like, the love of Rebels, and I think some of the later episodes, particularly, I mean, when Ahsoka, even when her master was referenced, the way her face changed.
33:02 Like, Anakin's Force ghost is around at this point.
33:06 Have they talked?
33:08 Have they had that conversation yet?
33:10 I mean, I think there's going to be a lot of unpacking there, and for me, like, having just finished the Thrawn books and the comics, there is something that, like, Rebels fans are, I don't think, even prepared for, unless they've read the books.
33:26 And admittedly, even having read the books, I don't think I'm prepared for what they have cooking up here.
33:32 But in terms of pace, I'm glad.
33:36 This was a slow burn.
33:39 I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
33:40 It felt genuinely cinematic, which is something that Star Wars television, there was some episodes of The Mandalorian that knocked that out of the park, and other episodes where I'm like, what is Lizzo doing here?
33:54 Certainly not forcing anybody out of their comfort zone.
33:58 I'll tell you that much.
34:00 But I loved it, and honestly, I hate that we're even talking right now, because I want to watch the next episode.
34:07 I know people are just like, get to the next one, they release two for a reason.
34:10 That's why I'm trying not to become a prognosticator for what's going to come next, because I'm like, what's the point? We're going to watch the second episode, then we prognosticate.
34:20 Good ass vocab word, damn.
34:22 That's a good SAT word.
34:24 I looked it up beforehand so I could use it in this video.
34:27 Just use it in every video, I just learned one new word.
34:30 I'm not going to look up a video word for every video, I'm just going to implement it somehow.
34:36 That's a good technique, you'll have at least 365 new words at the end of the year.
34:41 This was really thrilling, having only a mild amount of familiarity with what Rebels is, tone-wise and ensemble-wise.
34:51 This gave me the joys of both, how do I put it, this felt like the fun adventure that you get from a Mandalorian, but with the focus that a lot of people complain is missing from that.
35:07 I feel like this also, everybody points to Andor as the second coming of Star Wars, in a lot of ways it certainly earns that argument.
35:16 This did nicely to pull the quiet character nuance from Andor and put it in something that still feels like it's going to be propulsive and about adventure.
35:27 But also contained within a lot of character relationships and growth and frictions and history over time.
35:33 Not having all of that context, I could feel it all through the performances.
35:38 I think it was really smart for them to give you so many moments and scenes to introduce each character, to put them in their element, to show them breaking things down or being rebellious or whatever it is.
35:49 Drawing the spirits, everybody is very clear at the moment to me, even though we haven't spent time with the classic Rebels ensemble all together much yet.
36:00 This had a constant sense of momentum and tension, the Sith characters or the in-between Jedi Sith, whatever these new Balin and co are going to be.
36:13 Their lightsabers are orange, so there's something in between.
36:17 Yeah.
36:19 What does it mean?
36:22 I'll tell you what it means. This is the connective tissue between all of it.
36:28 And orange is the colour?
36:30 Orange is the colour of connective tissue. Have you ever cut somebody open before?
36:34 No.
36:36 Come on!
36:38 It's all orange.
36:41 It is.
36:43 It's disgusting.
36:46 I am particularly eager and excited to see how everything that we've seen so far in just one episode is what I think we were all praying for when The Force Awakens came out.
37:02 We wanted that questionable, what happens when the Jedi Order is no more, is there something in between?
37:11 We wanted to be able to tap into the mystical nature of The Force, have that connective tissue to the prequels, to the original trilogy, but also set up something big and exciting.
37:21 And the most important part, and what I think they failed at in the sequel trilogy, is something original, something different.
37:30 Like Obi-Wan, I feel like you have that hope of what do you do in the no-man's land between one establishment and another, one order and another, and we didn't really rise quite to that occasion.
37:42 No, I agree.
37:45 There's a nice mystery and suspense to this, and I think it's really, really smart to have this established dynamic between Ahsoka and Sabine.
37:57 That way you can give a character arc, especially for a variety of factors.
38:03 One being that when Ahsoka was reintroduced in live action with Mandalorian and her little appearance in Book of Boba Fett, that portrayal is someone who's just so wise and sage, and she's got everything under control.
38:17 A little too perfect.
38:21 Exactly. Which is great for an appearance, a guest star appearance. But if she's going to be the lead, you need to throw her into something where there can be an emotional obstacle, a hurdle for her to overcome.
38:34 And for it to be something that is mirroring her past trajectory of someone who was stubborn and difficult to deal with, and then her even acknowledging, "Hey, I abandoned stuff. I got disillusioned by the Jedi Order. I left that behind."
38:50 I love how they're smart in the way they do it, because there's such a storyline in the Clone Wars of why she left the Jedi Order that when you watch it, it's not like she just left the Jedi Order.
39:01 It's a whole thing with being framed and all this stuff.
39:05 The Jedi Order left her.
39:07 Yeah, exactly. There's this whole thing to it. So it's not just she left the Jedi Order, but they have to make a brief because they don't have time to dive into all that shit.
39:16 The level of responsibility, though, that must be on her shoulders. I mean, even if you don't watch all the Clone Wars, to watch the final two seasons, and particularly how they connect Ahsoka's final arc there.
39:30 I mean, she's living with a heavy burden.
39:35 Right. And a lot of this is about also not repeating the mistakes from the past that she's trying to do. So they've established a good arc for her to go down. And then, of course, for Sabine as well.
39:47 Because she's a really complex character, too.
39:51 I thought she should have been the leader of Rebels.
39:54 Yeah, she should have been. And I think towards the end, she was getting there. But you have to consider the fact that she created a weapon that played a big role in the destruction of her people.
40:05 She has not had an easy go of it. Based upon where we are in the timeline, Mandalore is gone.
40:12 Which means her family has been vaporized.
40:14 I didn't even think about that.
40:18 The other thing is, if she became Ahsoka's apprentice, she would have been pretty old at the time to become an apprentice. Historically speaking, that doesn't always work out the way you want it to.
40:30 All the rules are thrown out the window at this point, man.
40:33 I don't disagree with that. But it comes with its own set of challenges. But either way, there's only one real way to figure out what happens next. And that's to like and subscribe.
40:47 More so than watching the next episode. Like and subscribe. Click the notification bell.
40:53 Alrighty, guys. I thought this was excellent. And I hope that people latch on to the show, especially if you're not familiar with it. I don't get the impression you need to.
41:07 I think it's easy to feel lost. I can imagine there will still be that camp.
41:13 I think that's good. It forces you to pay attention.
41:16 It does, I think, increase the motivation for people if they do latch on to this to go check out the extended media.
41:23 Because then they will have, instead of feeling overwhelmed by so many seasons and so many characters, I have a point of reference now to go and look for in those pieces.
41:31 But they don't craft the dialogue in a way that's like wink. It still sounds very lived in and this is the exchange that they would have with each other.
41:41 It's not just Exposition City. It's not just Easter Egg City either.
41:44 Somebody pointed out that in the advertising, they haven't leaned at all on any of the animated footage.
41:49 So they're not telling, they're not cuing the audience like you got to go familiarize yourself with that. Otherwise, you're not going to get this at all.
41:56 But it doesn't like again, like from outside a little bit.
41:59 Except that giant mural.
42:01 Well, sure, there are definitely going to be things that go over your head.
42:04 But those things don't feel like you're being left out of the club or like you're lesser for not knowing.
42:10 If you've watched other live action Star Wars at this point, you know a majority of the people on that mural.
42:16 Yeah.
42:17 With the exception of Kanan and Ezra.
42:19 You don't think Force Ghost Kanan will show up?
42:21 No. How would he have learned to become a Force Ghost?
42:23 What do you mean? You have to learn to become a Force Ghost.
42:26 That's not how the Force works.
42:28 You could throw it out the window at this point.
42:30 He wasn't able to get like a physical form at first.
42:33 He could have learned.
42:35 He could have got the mumbo jumbo and become a Ghost.
42:37 It's been a few years. Or he's in the wolf, right?
42:39 He is in a wolf.
42:40 That I believe. Mostly because Dave Filoni has a thing for wolves.
42:43 He's got one of those wolf t-shirts.
42:45 The wolf just shows up and is like, "I'm doomed."
42:48 "I'm doomed."
42:50 Man, I remember just being on the internet trying to figure out what the hell was going on with those wolves when I was watching Rebels.
42:58 I hope that just saves the day again. All right, let's watch the second episode.
43:00 Let's do it.
43:01 Thanks guys for being here. And let's get to it.
43:04 Yeah, let's get to it.
43:05 [music]
