00:00 Shahrukh Khan is one of the biggest superstars in Indian cinema and has maintained that position for many years.
00:06 The actor has consistently featured in the top 10 richest actors list.
00:10 However, there was a time when the jawan actor couldn't afford to renovate his iconic home, Mannat.
00:16 Mannat, a landmark in Mumbai, attracts a sea of fans every day and they make sure to get a picture with it when they visit.
00:24 But there was a time when Mannat was beyond Shahrukh Khan's reach.
00:27 During one of Gauri Khan's events where her new coffee table book, My Life in Design, was launched, Shahrukh spoke about his struggle to buy and renovate the house of his dreams.
00:38 "Coming from Delhi, one was used to live in bungalows. We didn't realise that Mumbai has its own system, where apartments are even more expensive.
00:47 We weren't used to it, not because I was very well off, but because in Delhi it seemed like everyone had a bungalow," Shahrukh said.
00:55 He mentioned that their first house wasn't too far from Mannat and was lent to them by a director.
01:01 He continued, "We didn't have much money and as soon as we saved up some, we decided to buy this bungalow.
01:08 It was way beyond our means. We managed to buy it, but then we had to rebuild it because it was quite dilapidated.
01:15 We didn't have money to furnish it either.
01:18 Of course, we called a designer and the cost of the lunch he served us while discussing how he designed the house was more than my monthly salary.
01:27 Contrary to popular belief that I spend most of my time in the bathroom, I like my library the most.
01:38 It's the section of the house that serves as my office and it doesn't have any electronics.
01:44 It's a library and I enjoy sitting in it. It's been a while since I have read the books in it, but it just feels very intellectual and smart," he concluded.
