  • last year
Ahead of World Alzheimer's Day at the end of this month, a dementia charity is urging those with the disease to take extra care during the heatwave.

Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people with dementia and their carers to ensure those with the disease are drinking enough fluids and wearing the correct clothing as the UK is set to experience record-breaking temperatures this month.

September is World Alzheimer's Month and the international day recognising the impacts of the disease is fast approaching on September 21.

With the heat health warning upgraded to amber, Alzheimer’s Society is providing advice to help the 3,800 people across Manchester living with dementia to stay safe and hydrated during the hot spell.

The charity is encouraging people to enjoy the nice weather, while also recognising that high temperatures can lead to severe health problems for people with dementia unless they take special precautions to keep cool and well-hydrated.

00:00 Ahead of World Alzheimer's Day at the end of this month, a dementia charity is urging those
00:05 with the disease to take extra care during the heatwave. Alzheimer's Society is encouraging
00:10 people with dementia and their carers to ensure those with the disease are drinking enough fluids
00:15 and wearing the correct clothing as the UK is set to experience record-breaking temperatures this
00:21 month. September is World Alzheimer's Month and the International Day Recognising the
00:25 Impacts of the Disease is fast approaching on September 21. With the heat health warning
00:31 upgraded to amber, Alzheimer's Society is providing advice to help the 3,800 people
00:37 across Manchester living with dementia to stay safe and hydrated during the hot spell. The
00:42 charity is encouraging people to enjoy the nice weather while also recognising that high
00:47 temperatures can lead to severe health problems for people with dementia unless they take special
00:52 precautions to keep cool and well hydrated. "The symptoms associated to dementia, it could be that
00:58 a person may forget to keep hydrated which is so important in the summer and it can be quite
01:06 an easy thing to do especially when there's so much going on and the weather is so appealing
01:11 to so many people. So it's really important to always check in if you can and just make sure
01:17 that that person is happy, comfortable and healthy. The best kind of ways to do that is by
01:24 making sure that person is dressed appropriately for the weather, that they are stocked up on all
01:30 suntan lotion, that they're in the shade and trying to avoid those peaks and hours so from 12
01:38 till 3. If they could remain indoors, shutting the blinds and curtains really helps just to keep cool
01:47 and just finding ways to cool off. There's good ways of making homemade ACs by getting a fan and
01:55 popping a bottle of ice water in front of that fan. That's a very good technique to keep cool.
02:02 Families, friends and carers of people affected by dementia can be more alert by checking in,
02:09 calling, popping into the house. Usually a really good technique is if you tell yourself that you're
02:17 going to make a drink and then offer the person, any person, I'll make one for you, the good chances
02:23 they'll accept. As part of one of our accelerator projects we supported jelly drops which are a
02:30 really innovative tool to support a person affected by dementia to stay hydrated. Small jelly sweets
02:37 and they taste amazing, they're full of fruity flavour, 99% water so they're really encouraging
02:44 the person to stay hydrated. As well as that, keeping fruit around the house and water around
02:53 the house so it can be picked up where safe of course like watermelon, grapes, those high
02:59 water content fruits are really really valuable and great to pick up.
