The counting of votes for seven assembly seats in six states have been completed. These bypolls are seen as a significant test for the opposition alliance INDIA against the ruling BJP-led NDA, with implications for upcoming state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The seven assembly seats where by-polls were held are
Bageshwar in Uttarakhand,
Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh,
Puthuppally in Kerala,
Dhupguri in West Bengal,
Dumri in Jharkhand,
and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura.
These by-elections have witnessed a united front from the INDIA alliance in certain constituencies, notably Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh and Dumri in Jharkhand. Out of these seven seats, three were previously held by the BJP, and one each by the Samajwadi Party, CPI(M), JMM, and Congress.
Starting with Puthuppally in Kerala,
Chandy Oommen, a Youth Congress leader and active participant in Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra last year won the Puthuppally by-election by 78098 votes
This bypoll was necessitated by the passing of veteran Congress leader Oommen Chandy, who served as the Chief Minister twice and held the seat uninterrupted since 1970. Chandy's son Chandy Oommen stepped in as the Congress candidate.
Second is Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura
The Bharatiya Janata Party won in both Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies in Tripura. The ruling BJP gained an early lead in both seats and kept increasing its vote margin in every round of counting, taking its tally in the Tripura assembly to 33.
BJP's Tafajjal Hossain secured 34,146 votes while his nearest rival Mizan Hossain of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was a distant second with 3,909 votes. The two independent candidates – Md: Selim and Ratan Hosen – secured less than 200 votes, even less than NOTA's 434 votes.
The by-election to the Boxanagar constituency was necessitated by the death of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque. The Boxanagar seat has 66 percent minority voters of a total of 43,087 electors.
In Dhanpur, BJP's Bindu Debnath defeated Kaushik Chanda of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by 18,871 votes. While Debnath secured 30,017 votes after the final round of counting, the CPI(M) candidate received 11146 votes.
Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik's resignation as MLA necessitated the by-election in the Dhanpur assembly seat. The Dhanpur constituency, once considered a stronghold of the Left, has over 8,000 tribal voters of the total 50,346 electors. The BJP won the seat for the first time in the assembly polls held seven months ago.
An average turnout of 86.50 percent was recorded in the two seats.
