01:23 They are medium-sized lizards that only grow 7 to 9 centimeters long.

01:26 Black girdled lizards are pitch black or very dark in color.

01:30 But according to a herpetologist or an expert in reptiles and amphibians,

01:36 is not a black girdled lizard but a spiny waterside skink.

01:40 It is endemic meaning it can only be seen here in the Philippines.

01:43 In Cebu, Panay, Negros Islands, and the Luzon.

01:49 Its skin and scales are very spiny, quite similar to a crocodile.

02:07 They do this by using pigment-bearing cells in the outer layer of their skin
