00:00 I've heard lots of people say, "Why would you be educating Aboriginal kids in elitist
00:05 schools?"
00:06 All Indigenous people like to steal.
00:07 Lazy.
00:08 Dumb.
00:09 We walk around with no shoes.
00:10 Hunting kangaroos all the time.
00:13 I can't let it get to me.
00:20 I'm on the Yallurri Scholarship, which is awarded to Indigenous children to go to a
00:25 private school.
00:26 Enjoy 2020.
00:27 Thank you.
00:28 Families.
00:29 They're willing to give up their child at 12 years old, send them thousands of kilometres
00:33 away.
00:34 That in itself is a challenge.
00:37 There's so many questions to ask.
00:41 When she was born and I saw how dark the colour of her skin was, I realised she would have
00:45 enough challenges in this world if she didn't have the right education.
00:49 I love you.
00:50 My home and school is two different worlds, but I'm kind of joining the two worlds together.
00:56 And that's hard.
00:58 We are trying to build these kids up.
01:01 Hands up if you want to be successful.
01:03 So that they can have some influence on their communities and change.
01:07 I just saw things that no youngster should really see.
01:10 Reality is they might never go back to those communities.
01:13 I kind of just want to be back at school, like I'm going back as soon as I can.
01:16 And then sometimes you need to think, are we doing the best thing?
01:21 Or are we not?
01:25 My dream is to get into acting.
01:27 My brother is not wrong.
01:28 I want to become a teacher, so I work with special needs kids.
01:31 Let your light shine.
01:34 If we don't have opportunities on country, then how do they keep connected?
01:41 It's kind of hard to continue to call myself Aboriginal when I don't really have much to
01:44 show for it.
01:45 I'm from the Munarra tribe.
01:46 Torres Strait Islander.
01:47 Munarra Ngururri.
01:48 But Captain Cook's the one who found Australia.
01:49 Yes.
01:50 The telescope and the foot up on the rock.
01:51 Captain Cook.
01:52 You don't realise it, but you have great influence.
02:01 Children are you in the great future.
02:04 I believe in myself with my whole heart.
02:10 People doubt Indigenous Australians.
02:11 I hope I can just push away that doubt a little bit and make people believe in us.
