00:00 >> What's for Kate?
00:00 Kate said the game is a Hawkeye, you get to take home the CyHawk trophy.
00:03 What's it like for you now?
00:04 >> Yeah, I mean, this was just an unbelievable team win.
00:06 And I think the guys were so excited just to get to the locker room and
00:11 celebrate with coach.
00:12 I mean, to be a part of a team with the greatest coach.
00:17 I mean, he cares about it so much.
00:18 And for us to be on the field and be a part of this team with the 200th win,
00:22 I mean, I'm just truly honored to be a part of this team.
00:25 >> I saw you and Joe talking to each other after the game.
00:27 This is a big one for Joe coming back home.
00:28 What were you guys saying to each other?
00:30 What was he expressing to you?
00:31 >> I mean, we were just full of joy.
00:33 I mean, I know that he's from Ames and for him to come back home and
00:37 get the win, I know that this was something that he definitely had in mind
00:41 coming back one more year.
00:43 And I'm just so happy that we were able to pull it out, not just for him,
00:46 not just for coach, but for everyone on this team who's been
00:50 dealing with the loss since last year.
00:52 I'm just happy we were able to get it done today.
00:54 >> Counters seem to be working for you guys today.
00:57 >> Counters?
00:57 >> Yeah, counters.
00:58 Is that something you guys saw on film coming into this week?
01:00 >> Honestly, we were kinda adjusting a lot throughout the game when it came to
01:05 our run game.
01:06 I mean, we had some things that we were anticipating going into the game.
01:10 And to be honest, we ended up kinda just sticking with what was working.
01:13 And shout out to the O-line because we played a pretty dynamic defense today.
01:20 And some schematics are pretty tough against a team like this and
01:25 they played great.
01:26 >> Not a whole lot of contact for you in the pocket especially.
01:30 What in particular about the offensive line and
01:33 preparation for this week helped keep you upright?
01:37 >> Yeah, I think overall, I mean, everyone's just getting better.
01:41 I think we're still growing.
01:43 We definitely still have a lot of room to improve.
01:45 I know that we had some miscues today that some of us want back.
01:49 I mean, I know I should have, I gotta go buy Deontay Vine's dinner because I
01:54 missed him on that go-around.
01:55 But there are some things we still gotta get better at.
01:57 But I think just overall, just us continuing to grow together and
02:02 really just how passionate they are about getting better is,
02:05 I think it's shown on the field.
02:06 >> Okay, what does Jaz Parson bring to the table?
02:09 Just seems like he has an explosive first step run with reckless aggression.
02:13 >> I mean, that's a great way to put it.
02:14 He is such a downhill runner.
02:16 He is willing to throw his body for the team no matter what the circumstance.
02:20 And we definitely appreciate when a dude like that,
02:23 when Jaz is gonna run like that, we know how hard he runs.
02:26 And if that's something that he brings to this team,
02:29 we're happy that he's on our team.
02:31 >> What about the environment?
02:32 I mean, you've been in big environments before.
02:34 What did you think of it here and
02:36 then taking a 10-0 lead at the offense right after the game?
02:40 >> Yeah, I mean, I was super excited to, excuse me, come into this environment.
02:46 And some of the best parts was at the end when we were going out there for
02:49 like the four-minute drill and
02:51 they were going back and forth on each side of the stadium.
02:53 I mean, that's the kind of stuff that gives you juice.
02:55 And I mean, I'm just happy that we were able to get the win in a pretty tough
03:00 environment, honestly.
03:01 >> I'm sure when you transferred to Iowa, you had a lot of goals in mind for
03:03 yourself, was getting the CyHawk trophy back.
03:06 One of the top tier goals that are up there, at least on the list?
03:08 >> Yeah, of course.
03:09 I think my goal and everyone else's goal on this team is to win every single game
03:14 we play, and the fact that we were able to get the trophy back, that's huge.
03:17 >> You've played some other coaches before.
03:19 What makes Kurt Ferrick stand out?
03:21 What makes him different?
03:22 What makes him a person that you like?
03:25 What do you like about him?
03:27 >> Well, my relationship with Coach Ferrence, I mean, to answer your question,
03:31 I think I just know how much everyone cares about Coach Ferrence.
03:35 That is something that I recognized from the day I walked in,
03:38 how much everyone else respects him, but also how much he cares about us.
03:43 And I think, I'm not dissing anyone else.
03:46 I'm just saying my relationship with Coach Ferrence,
03:48 I just have an unbelievable relationship with Coach Ferrence.
03:51 And he has a great relationship with everyone on this team.
03:53 And there's nothing else that these guys wanted was to go and get that win for him.
03:58 >> Two weeks in, what would you say the offense is two weeks in from the season?
04:02 >> Progressing.
04:03 I think some of our scheme is definitely different from what we've run in
04:09 years past, but I think really from that standpoint, I think we're getting better.
04:14 I think we're closing the gap.
04:16 We were able to see, I mean, some things that came up today was stuff that
04:19 kind of caused by surprise and that's gonna come along at times.
04:23 And we're still early, but I think we're able to see the level that we're able
04:28 to play at in pressure situations on third down and when they're bringing cover zero.
04:33 That's two teams in a row that tried bringing cover zero on us and
04:36 we responded really well.
04:38 So I think we're still progressing and I think that's just our mindset and
04:42 we're just gonna continue to get better.
04:43 >> What are you guys gonna do to celebrate?
04:45 >> I don't know.
04:47 >> [LAUGH] >> Obviously, I think we're all just
04:50 gonna enjoy this, but we gotta get back at practice tomorrow.
04:53 So now that we got the dub now, let's celebrate a little bit tonight, but
04:57 we gotta go get another win at home.
04:59 >> How'd you navigate the week health wise and
05:01 then how do you feel like you came out of this game?
05:03 It didn't seem like there were any setbacks.
05:05 >> No setbacks.
05:06 I think I'm very excited that I was able to come out of this game the way I did.
05:11 I mean, that's because of everyone on the offense,
05:15 we were able to get the ball out on time for the most part.
05:17 And the line did a great job protecting me.
05:19 So definitely no setbacks this week and
05:22 hopefully I can continue to get better and just get as close 100% next week.
05:26 >> Can you describe what it means to have a defense, get your points and
05:29 then the big stop at the end?
05:30 >> Can you say that one more time?
05:32 I'm sorry.
05:32 >> The defense, describe what it means.
05:34 I know you're offense, but to have a defense that can get you points on the big
05:36 six and then the stop at the end, the end of the game.
05:38 >> Yeah, I mean, our defense is unbelievable.
05:41 I think for them to score points is like, I'm just like,
05:46 I guess it's like normal around here, but I'm just not used to a defense score points.
05:51 And for them that's normal and I think that's awesome.
05:54 I mean, for them to have our back like that, it's huge for
05:57 when maybe when we're not scoring at times.
05:59 But I think overall the defense, they just continue to play their best.
06:03 And they're making us better too because in practice we're able to go against
06:08 one of the best defenses in the nation.
06:10 So I love those guys and we appreciate them.
06:13 >> Once Iowa gets that fourth down stop and effectively ends the game,
06:17 you guys are going back out there on the field one last time.
06:20 What are you telling your teammates at that point?
06:22 >> I mean, I think we're just probably exchanging some I love you's and
06:26 just how proud we are of each other.
06:28 I think we had a battle for this one.
06:33 And I think no rivalry game should come easy and it definitely didn't today.
06:37 So we were able to fight through some adversity and work through,
06:39 it was a grind today.
06:41 But I think the guys, we all recognize that how hard each one of us played today
06:45 and we're just exchanging that and we're just pretty proud of ourselves.
06:48 >> Two more questions.
06:50 Did you think the pick was fast interference?
06:52 >> It was questionable.
06:54 >> [LAUGH] >> But
06:57 then our defense got a pick on the next play, so maybe ball don't lie.
07:01 >> [LAUGH] >> Does it make you feel better when
07:05 what may or may not have been your mistake now all of a sudden is kind of
07:08 wiped off?
07:09 >> Yeah, I mean, what's the difference of me throwing the pick and
07:12 then us finishing the drive with a touchdown and
07:14 our defense just scoring on the next play?
07:18 Whatever it takes to win.
07:19 >> All right, thanks, Dave.
07:21 >> 360 on the run, a 59 yarder.
07:23 >> 59 yarder, I mean, the guy started himself inside and
07:28 then my blocker just came around and it was like open.
07:31 I seen one guy right here, but I just hit a little too and
07:34 I just hit the sideline.
07:36 >> Did you know you were gonna have this big of an opportunity this week?
07:41 Did you have it during your practice or did you have it early?
07:45 >> Not really, I mean, it just kind of happened.
07:49 I mean, but when I got in, I just took advantage of my opportunity.
07:53 So that's really what it was.
07:56 >> What do you think you can add to this offense,
07:59 what's something that you can bring maybe no one else has?
08:02 >> I'm really just down here running, so it's like,
08:06 we've been in situations, third and one, those type of situations.
08:12 I feel like I can bring a very important asset to that part of the game.
08:16 I can catch, too.
08:18 I can catch it very good, very, very good.
08:21 >> What do you enjoy more, that big 59 yard run or
08:24 punching the ball in the end zone?
08:26 >> They'll probably be punching the ball in the end zone, honestly.
08:30 >> On that pass protection, you took out two guys.
08:32 Did you know you took out two guys?
08:34 >> Yeah, I seen one guy inside, but I have my guard outside.
08:38 So I slung my body just so I could get over there.
08:42 >> So you did it on purpose?
08:43 >> I did it on purpose.
08:46 >> Yes, how do you describe your emotions today?
08:48 Not only thinking you're gonna maybe be a huge contributor, now you have a huge run
08:52 and a touchdown.
08:53 What does this mean to you to help get the trophy back in the way you did?
08:56 >> I mean, my emotions went wild.
08:59 I didn't think I was gonna do this, but I did.
09:04 I prepared for it.
09:06 So it's crazy to see it happen.
09:10 >> How does it feel getting the CyHawk trophy?
09:11 Did you get a chance to get your hands on it after the game,
09:13 get a chance to carry it at all?
09:14 >> Of course, of course.
09:15 >> [LAUGH] >> I mean, it felt good getting it back,
09:20 cuz last year it didn't feel too good losing it.
09:24 And then the whole team coming on the sideline and all this.
09:28 I held that grudge for a whole year.
09:31 >> [LAUGH] >> How have you tried to stay patient and
09:34 ready for when your moment came?
09:35 Cuz I think they pulled you seven and a half yards last year.
09:40 >> I just kept my head down every day and I just worked cuz I knew my time would come.
09:46 And when it come, I'm gonna show up.
09:49 And I just work every day.
09:52 It don't matter.
09:53 I know anything can happen at any time, any run back can get injured.
09:57 So I just think about it like that.
10:00 >> It seemed like the offensive line took a step forward today in the run blocking.
10:05 Did you notice anything different particularly about today,
10:08 the way the offensive line blocked the run game?
10:10 >> I mean, they was blocking the head like no other guys.
10:13 I mean, I give all my credit to them cuz without them, none of this would happen.
10:18 I wouldn't have this much yards.
10:20 I wouldn't have my first touchdown.
10:22 I mean, they've been working hard all week.
10:23 We've been working hard all week running their defense,
10:27 like the scouts and everything, so.
10:29 >> Win number 200 for your head coach.
10:33 What does that mean to you to be able to celebrate that with him,
10:35 especially in an environment like this?
10:37 >> It's great.
10:38 It's great.
10:39 My coach is a great person.
10:40 I mean, I love to see him happy, but when he cry, it kinda make me get emotional.
10:47 I mean, but he's a great coach, so he deserves it.
10:49 >> On that 59 yard run, you got caught from behind.
10:55 I'm motivated to get into the end zone right after that.
10:57 >> I was very motivated.
10:59 I was very motivated, cuz I thought I was wrong.
11:02 I honestly thought I was wrong.
11:04 Till I seen that guy at the corner of my eye.
11:06 I think me turning around was slowing me down, honestly.
11:09 >> Jess- >> You think next time you'll be
11:12 turning around then?
11:13 >> Not at all.
11:14 >> [LAUGH] >> Jess, how do you describe yourself as
11:17 a runner?
11:18 I think Cade said you run with reckless abandon and great purpose.
11:21 Is that pretty accurate?
11:22 How would you kinda sum it up?
11:23 >> I see that, yeah.
11:25 I'm like a downhill runner.
11:26 They say I run wild.
11:28 I mean, I run with a purpose every time.
11:31 Every time you see me on the ball, you see me on the ball hard.
11:34 I might be wild, but I'm running.
11:37 You can tell.
11:38 I'm trying to get some work done.
11:41 >> The way Caleb Johnson has described it is that boy can run.
11:45 What do you think about that?
11:47 >> It was great.
11:48 >> [LAUGH] >> It was great,
11:49 cuz he can run too.
11:50 >> [LAUGH] >> I mean,
11:52 we just come through each other.
11:55 >> All right, thanks, Chad.
11:55 >> Thanks, Jess.
11:56 >> Thanks, Jess, appreciate it.
11:57 >> Long run by Jazz early in the game.
12:01 You had a really big block.
12:02 Kind of walk me through what you saw and what you did, and
12:05 then what that run meant to this team.
12:07 >> I mean, obviously it's just a basic counter play, so I got the kick out on that.
12:11 I was just doing my job, trying to kick him out as much as possible.
12:14 See Jazz running down the field, trying to outrun that guy.
12:16 That's a great feeling.
12:17 There's no better feeling as an offensive lineman than seeing your backs
12:20 sprinting down the field.
12:21 >> Seemed like that was working all day.
12:24 Is that something that you guys had planned coming into this one?
12:27 >> I mean, we were definitely emphasizing the counter play a lot,
12:30 as long as a bunch of other different schemes.
12:32 But later in the game, we're just trying to run out the clock.
12:36 So we just stuck to what was working.
12:38 It's fun hitting people, so.
12:39 >> [LAUGH] >> On that play with Jazz,
12:41 did you see right away once you made that block?
12:44 Did you know it was gonna be such a big play, or
12:46 when did you realize, okay, this isn't just your average player?
12:49 >> Once I saw it, I was getting up off the ground,
12:51 I saw him sprinting down the field.
12:53 Obviously, that gives everyone excitement.
12:55 So it's definitely a great feeling, just like I said,
12:58 seeing your backs running down the field.
13:00 >> How would you kind of evaluate just where the offense is
13:02 out of these first two games?
13:04 >> I know, we still got a lot of growth.
13:06 I mean, every day we go out to practice trying to improve on what we have to do,
13:10 what we have to do for this team.
13:11 But we're just slowly building on that every week, every day,
13:15 just trying to be the best we can be to help out the team.
13:17 >> Can you kind of contrast, you were playing some of your first ever
13:19 college action as a true freshman here two years ago.
13:22 Compare how you felt then to how you felt today, a third year starter now.
13:26 >> I was definitely a lot more nervous that first year, being my first road game,
13:30 especially in a great environment like Iowa State is.
13:33 I mean, it was definitely, it was a big difference from year one to year three.
13:38 I was definitely a lot more calm, more confident in my abilities
13:41 coming into this game, and I think that goes for
13:43 a lot of the guys on the offensive line as well, so.
13:46 >> What does it mean to you as an Iowa kid bringing this trophy back?
13:49 >> I mean, there's nothing better.
13:51 You grow up watching this game every year, and to be a part of it now,
13:55 it's just a great feeling, especially coming home with the trophy again.
13:58 >> Is there something sweet about this being win number 200 for your coach?
14:02 >> I mean, we all love that guy.
14:04 He's a great coach, but he's the better person off the field.
14:06 He's always checking in on us and stuff.
14:08 There's no one that deserves it more than him.
14:11 >> What kind of a lift did Patterson give you guys in the run game?
14:14 Cuz he seemed to really hit the hole hard.
14:17 >> I mean, we just have to execute our stuff and
14:20 then give those backs those looks where they can hit the hole.
14:23 So not just Jazz, but I think anyone would have hit the hole just as hard as him.
14:28 I mean, obviously he brought a great lift to us on that first drive.
14:30 And continued to throw out the game.
14:33 >> What's the team with Ron Hawkins have more of those kind of jazz plays,
14:36 or less of those kind of one yard, three yard runs?
14:39 >> I think it just falls down to execution.
14:41 We're trying to get better at that every day.
14:42 We grow week to week.
14:44 So I think that comes from practice.
14:45 We just gotta get more confident in our ability to block people.
14:48 Just keep focusing on what we have to do fundamentally wise to get better.
14:51 >> Seems like the pass protection has kind of been a quicker or
14:56 messier than past years.
14:58 What do you think has been kind of what led to that?
15:00 >> Growing as a unit together, getting all those reps through fall camp as a unit,
15:05 definitely helped out a lot.
15:06 And with that, I think maturity for everyone on offense one.
15:11 Once you kind of grow up a little bit, you start to stop focusing on just your guy.
15:15 You can see the bigger picture of what's going on,
15:18 kind of eliminate possibilities from there.
15:19 >> One or two more if you have them.
15:21 All right, thank you.
