The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice ..or the SFJ organized the Khalistan referendum at a gurdwara in British Columbia, Canada yesterday. An approximate crowd of 5000-7000 people turned up for the event, against a predicted strength of 50,000-75,000. This was the same event which was earlier scheduled to be held at a Canadian Govt school but the permission was later revoked after uproar. Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, the fire-brand leader of the SFJ, also made a public appearance at the event and once again gave an inciteful speech hinting at 'Balkanising India'. SFJ has also announced another round of the referendum on October 29, also in Surrey. This development coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing India's deep apprehensions regarding the ongoing anti-India activities involving extremist factions in Canada to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of G20 summit.

00:00 The
00:18 secessionist group Seeks for Justice or the SFJ organized the Khalistan referendum at
00:24 a Gurudwara in British Columbia, Canada yesterday. An approximate crowd of 5,000 to 7,000 turned
00:30 up for the event against a predicted strength of 50,000 to 75,000. This was the same event
00:37 which was earlier scheduled to be held at a Canadian government school but the permission
00:40 was later revoked after uproar. Gurpatwan Singh Pannu, the firebrand leader of the SFJ
00:46 also made a public appearance at the event and once again gave an insightful speech hinting
00:52 at balkanizing India. SFJ has also announced another round of the referendum on October
00:57 29, also in Saray. The voting occurred at the Guru Nanak Singh
01:01 Gurudwara, the very Gurudwara that was previously led by Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the prominent
01:06 figure of SFJ in the province. Nijjar was fatally shot by unidentified attackers in
01:12 the Gurudwara's parking lot on June 18. While SFJ has accused India of being responsible
01:17 for Nijjar's assassination, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team which is handling
01:22 the case has not made any arrests so far in connection with the murder and has not officially
01:27 determined a motive for the crime. This development coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
01:32 expressing India's deep apprehensions regarding the ongoing anti-India activities involving
01:38 extremist factions in Canada to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of
01:43 G20 summit. Despite India's repeated expressions of concern to the Canadian government regarding
01:49 the use of Canadian territory for separatist activities, it appears that there is unlikely
01:54 to be any immediate action taken in response. This sentiment was echoed by Prime Minister
01:59 Justin Trudeau during his media briefing in New Delhi where he was attending the G20 leaders'
02:04 summit and had a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the event.
02:10 After the G20 summit concluded, Prime Minister Trudeau addressed a press conference in New
02:15 Delhi where he answered queries on Khalistan extremism and said, "Canada will always defend
02:20 freedom of expression, freedom of conscience and freedom of peaceful protest and it is
02:24 extremely important to us. At the same time, we are always there to prevent violence and
02:29 to push back against hatred."
02:32 At the same time, we are always there to prevent violence and to push back against hatred."
02:38 I think on the issue of the community, it's important to remember that the actions of
02:44 the few do not represent the entire community or Canada. The flip side of it, we also highlighted
02:52 the importance of respecting the rule of law and we did talk about foreign interference.
