Well, that’s the 42nd Great North Run all over and done with for another year. Whilst runners will have been prepping for months, I’m sure there’s a lot of accomplished people waking up this morning - maybe a couple with sore calves. So let’s take a look at what went down at the Great North Run 2023.

00:00 We're here at the Great North Run to talk to a couple of the spectators who are here
00:05 a few hours early to see what charities they're supporting and when their runners will be
00:09 rolling in.
00:10 I'm supporting the Aplasticanemia Trust. We support people with a rare form of bone marrow
00:16 failure which is aplasticanemia. We've got 19 people running which is huge for a really
00:23 small charity. So aplasticanemia affects one in every half a million people. So to have
00:28 19 people running for us is just amazing.
00:30 I work for MHA, Methanist Homes. We are the largest social care charity in Britain. We
00:40 do all sorts within our charity. A lot of it is befriending which is a big part of what
00:46 we do. Befriending when people are lonely, they live on their own, they're isolated and
00:52 a phone call every week. Just once a week is enough to keep those people happy and cheering.
00:58 Well it's definitely the weather for it. Waiting for more for it to roll in with other
01:01 competitors. Let's see who's running this year's Great North Run.
01:04 Well I'm running for my club Gerowen Hebben but I'm also running for Children's Cancer
01:09 North. So I've been raising money for them too.
01:11 Are you doing it next year?
01:13 Probably, yeah. As long as it's not too hot.
01:16 Amazing, on top of the world. Just got a PB. Hot but really good. The support on course
01:23 was fantastic and the marshals have been brilliant.
01:26 With the 42nd Great North Run, runners were expecting top temperatures during their 13.1k
01:31 run. To the point event organisers even said that this year was not the year to achieve
01:35 a personal best. But later in the day, thousands of runners got stuck as the metros were suspended
01:40 due to torrential downpours. Regardless, for a lot of people the rain didn't stop them
01:44 from enjoying the day.
01:45 It was amazing. It was brilliant. Very hot though. Too hot.
01:49 Are you doing it again next year? Yep. As long as it's cooler.
01:53 As long as it's not too hot. 20p on your ballot.
01:56 I spoke to Debbie who sat beside the finish line to see her daughter running the race.
02:00 She sadly lost her granddaughter to sepsis after the condition was misdiagnosed.
02:05 And she hoped that the race could raise a little more awareness on this subject.
02:10 We're supporting UK sepsis because my granddaughter passed away last year with sepsis.
02:16 We took her to the doctor's on the Wednesday and they thought it was something else.
02:21 And if we'd said on the Wednesday, could it be sepsis, she might have been saved.
02:25 Took her to the doctor's on the Thursday, she was diagnosed with something else.
02:28 Again, if we'd said then, could it be sepsis, she might have been saved.
02:31 Took her to the hospital on the Friday and if we'd said when we got there immediately,
02:35 could it be sepsis, again she might have been saved.
02:38 And because we didn't know, we weren't able to bring her home Saturday morning.
02:42 She died during the night. And it was very quick. And all we needed to do was say,
02:46 could it be sepsis? And that's why my daughter Chloe is running today.
02:50 It's the first time she's done it. She's really, really struggled.
02:54 She's not a natural runner. She's had injuries, she's had illness.
02:58 But the thought of raising money for Scarlett, that's what's driven her and that's what's got her through.
