00:00 And he ran a great route, caught it, all that, it's exciting.
00:04 But that goes back to Pete trusting us.
00:07 He asked me what I like throughout the game, all that kind of stuff.
00:10 And before that drive, that was something I really liked.
00:13 And he caught it, so he has a lot of trust in us as players, and
00:17 that means a lot to the player.
00:18 >> What did you see of the touchdown throw that she made?
00:21 >> Great route by she, ran double move, came over in motion, double move.
00:26 I tried to give a little palm pry, but he was settled at his feet,
00:28 to try and get the corner to stop.
00:30 And she's so fast, it's really tough on a corner to get back started
00:34 when he gets going.
00:35 And so she ran a great route again,
00:38 that's another play that Pete had called up, dialed up, hey, get ready.
00:43 And I really, really enjoyed working with him and his demeanor throughout the game.
00:49 Cuz you kinda know what's coming, you know what to expect, and he calls him and
00:52 he counts on us to make plays for him.
00:54 >> What does it say about Rashid to be able to bounce back from the opening
00:57 kickoff and to be able to be available and
01:00 to help make those plays to get you guys the touchdown and to win?
01:03 >> Well, it's a very veteran thing of him to do, a very grown up thing.
01:07 Usually when young guys make a mistake early, it's hard to get them back focused,
01:12 it's hard to get them back right for the rest of the game.
01:15 And that's just the NFL, it's just over time you see that.
01:18 And he made a play and no one blinked, no one flinched.
01:21 But I was really proud of him.
01:25 When something like that happens, his mindset and his demeanor was great.
01:28 So when something like that happens, I kinda hope he gets to make some plays
01:31 after to get that confidence back.
01:34 But from what it looked like to me, he didn't lose any.
01:36 Cuz he came out and caught a lot of passes for us in some big situations.
01:40 >> And what does a win like this do for the offense?
01:42 First game, it puts you all together in real life game B for action and
01:46 even just to pull out the win.
01:47 What does this kind of represent and say to the team on the offensive side?
01:50 >> Well, you know the exciting part was, I wanna talk about the weapons and
01:54 throwing the ball down the field and all that kind of stuff,
01:56 the things we've been doing in camp.
01:57 But this, we showed that we can win the ultimate physical type of game, right?
02:02 >> [LAUGH] >> You're good.
02:06 Yeah, we showed we can win a physical football game.
02:08 And we're gonna have to be able to win in any kind of different way.
02:13 And so I'm just glad that we hopefully got that one out of the way.
02:18 No, I'm kidding.
02:19 >> How proud are you to execute the drive to run out the clock and
02:21 see what we're doing?
02:22 >> Well, it felt good.
02:25 It felt really good.
02:26 Obviously, you can tell I wear my emotions on my sleeve sometimes.
02:30 So I was really excited, real fired up.
02:31 And the one that got me the most excited was the run that creased at the end.
02:36 Cuz that's the one that did it.
02:38 O-line called it right.
02:43 They blocked it right.
02:45 Jamal made the right cut, got down.
02:47 Did exactly what Coach asked, get to first, get down.
02:50 He did that.
02:51 That right there is what makes me proud.
02:53 Cuz it's game on line.
02:54 We get this, we win.
02:56 And we didn't have to put the defense back out there.
02:58 That makes me happy.
02:59 >> Derek, talk about your connection with Chris Olavi as well as Michael Thomas.
03:04 >> Yeah, I think today was awesome cuz the ball was spread around so much.
03:08 And Chris obviously went over 100 and
03:10 that's fantasy people's favorite thing ever.
03:13 And he did that for them.
03:14 When we can spread it out, no matter who gets the 100,
03:18 no matter who gets the touchdown.
03:19 As long as we keep that mindset of big team, little me,
03:23 hopefully we'll see a lot of good days for Chris and she and Mike and
03:28 Juwan and everybody.
03:30 And so the fact that we were able to spread it around,
03:33 everybody made their plays when they were called upon.
03:36 That's good to see as a quarterback because now I can trust them all.
03:39 Now if they're doubling hand or they're playing a robbery,
03:41 I can go to this guy, I can trust him to win.
03:44 It helps me with my decision making for sure.
03:46 >> Derek, can you explain what you saw on that big first and that last drive?
03:51 And you don't see a left hand necessarily go deep when you're trying to run
03:56 the clock out like that.
03:57 >> Yeah, that's all Pete Carmichael just trusting us as players.
04:01 It's a play that we talk all game.
04:04 And before that drive, it was a play that him and I had talked about.
04:09 I was like, Pete, I love this.
04:11 And what was awesome about that, cuz it's our first game really playing together
04:16 with all the situations, all the scenarios, game on the line.
04:19 And Pete trusted us to make a play.
04:21 And as a player, that means so much to us, that he would trust us in that situation
04:26 to go get that for him and for the team.
04:28 And hopefully we can continue to do that cuz he showed to us that he trusts us, so
04:33 we gotta keep proving to him every week that we can earn that.
04:35 >> So that was a design then to go to the sheet on that play?
04:38 >> Yeah, if they gave it to us.
04:39 Like if we had the one on one go release, all that.
04:41 If not, I'd have had something else.
04:42 But yeah, for sure, we were trying to get it to sheet.
04:45 >> Derek, what about the day you guys had been sitting on that double move,
04:49 the one that turned into the touchdown?
04:50 What was sort of origin of that?
04:51 Were you guys talking about that last night as something?
04:54 In the last few days, when did you identify that and
04:57 know that that was something you wanted to go to?
04:58 >> Well, we saw some in practice a couple weeks ago.
05:00 Hey, it'd be kind of cool if we did this.
05:03 And sure enough, as you watch the tape,
05:07 you're like, man, it looks kind of good in this situation to call it.
05:10 And we ran it in practice.
05:13 We actually didn't connect on it in practice, funny enough.
05:15 But today we connected and those are the ones that matter.
05:19 >> Derek, what about the defense?
05:21 Just talk about the way that they played and
05:23 what does that do for you as a quarterback when you sit and play like that?
05:27 >> If they don't play that well and we lose the game,
05:29 everybody's mad at me, and rightfully so.
05:33 And that's how it should be as a quarterback.
05:36 And this is the ultimate team game.
05:39 This is the ultimate team game.
05:41 It takes all 11 on the field at once, all three phases.
05:45 And all three phases had some plays that they'd like back, but
05:48 all three phases played their butt off and played physical and grinded.
05:52 Did anything they could to win.
05:53 So anytime we can get a win, yes, I'm so proud of our defense.
05:56 Yes, I'm so thankful with the takeaways that they got and
06:00 kind of washed ours away and helped us in that.
06:03 But like they would say, they expect us to finish the game,
06:07 just like we expect them to get us the ball back.
06:09 And as long as we keep that expectation for each other, knowing that, hey,
06:12 if it doesn't happen, we got your back, we'll take care of it.
06:15 Keep that kind of mindset.
06:16 I think we're gonna have a good season.
06:18 >> Talking about how physical it was.
06:20 >> All the offense line, I try my best to not be as testy, but be back there,
06:24 let my guys get open and let them run.
06:26 When I have to get out, try and go get as many yards as I can or
06:29 make a play with throwing it.
06:30 But they did a great job in the second half, and
06:35 this is without watching the film too.
06:37 They made it look like all my fault.
06:39 But in the second half, it just felt better.
06:43 The timing of things, whatever, however it worked out, it was just better.
06:46 And I'm very proud of those guys.
06:48 I think everybody, offense, defense,
06:51 everybody felt a little rusty on this or on that.
06:54 It's week one, and you hate to say that, but it always happens.
06:57 But we cleaned it up really fast and were able to bounce back to get the win.
07:02 >> You said you've been- >> Yeah, it felt great.
07:05 But again, in that situation, that was the expectation.
07:09 We got a score, we gotta get a touchdown to win this game.
07:12 And thankfully we did.
07:13 And I just try my best until the game's over to stay here.
07:19 And like I said, I get emotional.
07:21 But after that touchdown, it's so funny, in my head I'm like, cool,
07:24 first touchdown.
07:25 And then literally half a second later, it's out.
07:27 It's like, okay, now what do I gotta do?
07:30 And the best part about it is that we won the game.
07:34 We won the game.
07:35 That's literally the only reason I came here and
07:38 wanted to play this game so bad was to win this game.
07:41 So that we can hopefully continue to keep stacking them.
07:44 I love Mike, he's the ultimate competitor.
07:46 And wow, on game day, I love the communication that we have.
07:49 It's a different level, man.
07:51 He reminds me so much of Devontae and the way that they both approach the game.
07:55 And it makes sense cuz they're two of the best receivers in the whole league.
08:00 And his mentality, his violent route running.
08:04 You saw the one he caught over the middle on second down to get us back in
08:08 to a third advantageable and took a shot.
08:10 And he told me, he's like, if you gotta throw it in there, throw it in there.
08:14 And he let me throw it in there.
08:15 He took the hit and he got, he bounced up.
08:18 And just that mentality that he brings, it elevates everybody on offense.
08:24 It means, man, I gotta do that for us too.
08:26 I gotta match that.
08:28 And I'm just so proud of him.
08:30 I know it's been a long road for Mike.
08:32 I know, being able to start the game off big, to him down the sideline.
08:36 I know how much that meant to him.
08:38 But knowing Mike, he couldn't care less.
08:40 He cares about the next rep.
08:41 And so I think that that's what we've all fallen in love with Mike.
08:45 And I'm the same.
08:47 I haven't been around him as much as y'all, but
08:49 it didn't take long for me to see what he was about.
08:51 And I wish we had that play for Mike.
08:54 But I don't know, he just sees things the way I want him as a quarterback and
08:59 it's really impressive.
08:59 It's fun, so.
09:02 >> Derek, how would you describe how Trevor Penning sort of handling,
09:06 look, he had some struggles.
09:08 How he was handling that in the huddle and how you thought he was?
09:12 >> He was great, great mentality, great demeanor.
09:14 Every game's not gonna be everybody's best game.
09:18 And he was getting held on one, and something happened.
09:22 There's so many things and so many different things,
09:23 could I have got the ball out quicker?
09:25 I'm gonna watch it and be critical of myself to help him.
09:28 But I was so proud of his demeanor and the way he carried himself,
09:31 because no one wants to make a mistake.
09:34 All of us, all 53, nobody wants to go out there and
09:38 be the one that, man, that was on me, like I did before the half.
09:42 It crushes you, it hurts, cuz you want so much for your team.
09:44 But the way he picked himself up, we have a room full of grown men that, hey,
09:48 yeah, I made a mistake, let's keep going, let's keep playing.
09:51 And I felt that from him.
09:52 His demeanor is the same all the time.
09:53 He looks angry, he looks violent, and he plays that way.
09:56 And I love him to death and
09:58 I'm proud of the way that he was able to finish in the second half.
10:02 I got out and if I had time, I probably would have thrown it to Mike, but
10:05 someone was in my face.
10:06 Mike was coming on the over.
10:07 And so I tried to give it a safe outside shot that he would get it.
10:13 But yeah, I just overthrew it just a little bit.
10:16 >> Absolutely, they kept us in the game, they kept us in the fight.
10:20 When we weren't getting touchdowns, we were having field goals.
10:22 It was driving us crazy.
10:23 But they don't flinch.
10:26 And being able to play with a defense like that,
10:31 we can win a lot of games, especially once we get going.
10:35 And offensively, we didn't have our best, but we had enough to win, and
10:40 that's what matters.
10:41 And we had it when we needed it.
10:43 But when you look at the defense and the way that they can play,
10:46 there's gonna be games that we may have to score a lot.
10:48 There may be games that are tight like this.
10:50 There may be games where we can get a lead and help them out.
10:53 It's gonna change throughout, but
10:54 just knowing the type of people that are on that side of the ball,
10:57 the type of grown men that are in that room on defense, that's what excited me.
11:02 And I saw that today.
11:03 >> You know you're gonna have to, you don't wanna get the ball back.
11:06 >> Yeah, I made my day.
11:08 It really did, it meant a lot to me and to our offense that he trusted us to do it.
11:12 And I take my hat off to Coach Carbine, Pete's been unbelievable to work with.
11:19 And in a crucial moment, he's like, nope, I know he likes this, I'm calling it.
11:23 And he trusted us to make a play for him.
11:25 And like I said earlier, hopefully we can keep doing that to earn that trust,
11:28 earn that respect from him.
11:31 But that's him trusting his players.
11:33 And that says a lot about him and our coaching staff, especially head coach.
11:39 He's a defense guy, he'll run the ball, take the time out, kick it,
11:42 you know what, he could have said that.
11:43 He's like, no, we trust you guys.
11:44 And DA and Pete let us do that, and it was really cool.
11:49 I'm not gonna lie, it felt really good.
11:50 >> And even though they took it away from us, I thought he caught it.
11:55 But usually when that happens, the team, for whatever reason in football,
11:59 whether I've been watching or part of it, they get excited.
12:02 Quarterback got hit, he gets up, he's got blood on his hand.
12:06 For whatever reason, people like that stuff.
12:07 And I don't know if we play with more people than that, but
12:10 I just know we executed.
12:11 But you could definitely feel the energy and the excitement,
12:13 like no, we're gonna go finish this game.
12:16 You definitely felt that shift from the first half to the second.
