Saints' Chris Olave talks about his big day against the Titans and the wide receiver room.
Transcript
00:00 Hey Chris, how you doing man?
00:02 I'm good, I'm doing good.
00:05 Hey just. What was what was that
00:09 first full game experience like
00:11 with with Derek? Yeah, I know you
00:13 guys probably want to put more
00:14 points on the board and everything
00:15 like that, but it seemed like you
00:17 and him had a had a pretty good
00:18 connection off the bat.
00:19 I mean, just getting out there for the first game.
00:22 Start off kind of slow, but like it was good.
00:25 Just getting out there getting
00:26 a feel for the game.
00:28 It was few is for us just to get
00:31 the offense going and get a great win.
00:33 So I feel like it was it was.
00:36 What we've been cooking up in the
00:38 summer and training camp, but I feel
00:39 like we got a lot of things to improve on so.
00:42 It seems like they tried to move you
00:45 around a lot so you kind of motion
00:47 in the backfield and and you know,
00:49 just going motion a lot generally.
00:53 Do you like that you like kind of
00:55 just getting the chance to move
00:56 around the field and.
00:57 Operate at a different.
00:59 Oh yeah, I love.
01:01 I love moving around inside
01:03 outside slot backfield.
01:05 I feel like it just creates
01:06 matchups that we want.
01:07 Again, I'm not sure when the linebacker
01:09 or again match up on safety.
01:11 Getting an easy throw and try
01:13 to get some dollars out of the
01:14 cat so I definitely like getting
01:16 moved around like getting the ball
01:17 in different places.
01:19 Try to make some some people miss
01:21 so I'm excited about it using this year.
01:23 Chris, you said there were specific
01:26 improvements you wanted to make
01:28 going to the season.
01:29 Did you see them kind of manifest
01:31 in this game and was the movement
01:33 one of those things you wanted to see?
01:34 Oh yeah, so.
01:38 Kind of started a little bit trying
01:39 to get the yards out of the cat is
01:40 doing a lot more, a lot more choice
01:42 route or choice routes.
01:45 Just doing those little things just
01:47 to expand my game and being able
01:50 to be using multiple and multiple schemes.
01:56 Multiple plays, so I feel like I
01:57 worked on my game a lot this offseason.
01:59 And it definitely showed up in game one.
02:02 And Chris, I know one of the things
02:06 you talked about is finishing catches,
02:08 strong hands, the one on the sideline
02:11 comes to mind to me.
02:12 We had to keep the feet inbounds
02:13 and then and then hold on to possession
02:15 before you hit the ground out of bounds.
02:17 But did you feel like that
02:19 that strength, especially the catches
02:21 you were making with your hands
02:22 extended really paid off
02:24 and showed up in this game?
02:26 Oh yeah, for sure.
02:28 I feel like that was a good catch right there.
02:30 It's been dropped.
02:31 I feel like I could have made that last play
02:36 that deep ball on a third down.
02:40 I feel like I could have made that,
02:41 but I just got to play through that contact.
02:44 That was one that showed up
02:46 and I feel like I could have made that
02:48 despite him being all over me.
02:49 But I feel like I made a lot of improvement.
02:54 Like I said, I feel like I'm a new player
02:56 coming into the year too.
02:57 So it was definitely a good game,
03:00 but a lot of places to improve on.
03:02 We left a lot on the field too.
03:04 So I'm excited to keep going
03:05 and keep developing
03:08 and keep getting better throughout the year.
03:10 Chris, you've gone up against the secondary,
03:15 Marshawn, Alante, Paulson, and Marcus and Tyron a bit,
03:19 but just what has made them so special
03:21 just about where they are able to defend
03:24 against the opposition?
03:26 It's the competitive edge.
03:29 I mean, they all want to be the best.
03:33 Just the way they come about their work every day,
03:36 the way they prepare,
03:37 the way they attack practice every day,
03:39 and their practices carry over into the game.
03:42 So I'll be excited going against them in practice,
03:45 especially during training camp.
03:46 Just getting that competitive edge,
03:47 talking to them a little bit,
03:49 just getting each other better.
03:51 So when I know when we go into the game,
03:54 it's going to be tough for the other team,
03:56 especially in the pass game when we're running man.
03:58 So I love watching them.
04:00 I love watching them compete.
04:01 I love watching them talk.
04:03 It's something I look forward to on game days.
04:06 Hey, Chris, we've talked a lot about Mike Thomas
04:09 in the lead up to the season,
04:10 just to have him out there on the field for the whole game.
04:14 I mean, how much does that help what you guys do?
04:16 And to see him make that big catch
04:18 in the first play of the game,
04:18 what do you think?
04:21 I've been telling him every day,
04:23 just every day he goes out there,
04:24 he just looks better and better.
04:26 The way he practices,
04:27 the way he just goes about his work is second to none.
04:30 So just his presence and his competitive nature,
04:33 I feel like it uplifts the whole offense,
04:36 uplifts the whole team.
04:37 Just everybody seeing him going out there
04:39 and working in practice,
04:40 and having him by our side on game days,
04:43 having him just the positive talk on the sideline,
04:47 was having him as a teammate is huge for us.
04:50 So I definitely appreciate him
04:52 having his presence by our side.
04:56 It's definitely helping us become a better team.
04:59 Chris, Rasheed last night said
05:02 that guys were trying to keep him up
05:03 after that early fumble,
05:04 but obviously he must have some natural confidence too
05:07 to bounce back with the game he had.
05:08 What was his demeanor like?
05:10 And what confidence did everyone have in him
05:14 that he was going to bounce back the way he did?
05:16 I ain't never worried about it.
05:17 Rasheed, he's quiet, but he's confident.
05:20 He's humble about it.
05:21 But just the way he carries himself,
05:23 it's the way he attacks the game.
05:27 I know he's going to make a lot of plays in a game,
05:29 especially every game.
05:32 So I know when he makes a mistake,
05:34 he's going to bounce back.
05:36 He's just a different cat.
05:38 I love his game.
05:39 He's so quick, so fast.
05:42 But the way he carries himself,
05:44 that's the most important to me.
05:45 So I was excited for the game he had,
05:47 and I wasn't surprised at all.
05:49 - And Chris, when you talk about leaving stuff
05:53 in the field, what more do you want to see
05:55 out of this offense besides the obvious
05:57 and putting more points on the board?
05:58 - I feel like we got a lot of plays in.
06:02 We had a lot of plays in,
06:03 but we couldn't get to all of them.
06:05 Just the way the game was going,
06:10 it was a really slow-paced game.
06:12 A lot of field goals.
06:15 But we couldn't hit our deeper shots.
06:17 But just the way we marched down the field,
06:22 when we stayed consistent,
06:24 didn't get knocked back, didn't have negative plays,
06:26 I feel like on those drives,
06:27 we kind of marched down the field how we wanted.
06:29 So just to be able to stay consistent
06:32 in our down the field and not have negative plays,
06:37 I feel like when we don't be ourselves,
06:41 I feel like it's going to be very hard to stop us.
06:45 - Hey, Chris, I know this is kind of off topic,
06:49 but what was the film room like?
06:50 What were your thoughts when you saw Foster Moreau
06:55 lining up a few yards offside on that play?
06:58 - Man, I remember that exact play in the game.
07:00 I looked at the line.
07:02 I mean, we lined up.
07:03 Of course we lined up,
07:04 but we was like five yards or three yards
07:07 ahead of the ball.
07:07 I was like, man, I thought he was going to snap it
07:10 right there, but I told him to back up a little bit.
07:13 I think he saw it too.
07:14 Like right when I saw it, we both looked at the same time.
07:16 So I'm glad we got back on the line of scrimmage.
07:20 - Hey, Chris, a follow up on Rashid,
07:30 and not to put you on the spot,
07:32 is obviously no wrong answer,
07:34 but when you say he's a different cat,
07:36 I just wondered if you could give some examples
07:38 about as to what makes you think that or say that.
07:42 - He's just a different type of player, man.
07:44 When you look at him, he's like one-on-one.
07:46 He's just the type of player he is.
07:48 You don't really see that around the league,
07:49 just how fast he is, how explosive he is.
07:52 And when he gets the ball,
07:52 he could score at any time, wherever he gets the ball.
07:55 He's just so exciting to watch,
07:58 and he's so quick,
08:01 and the way he goes is about his business.
08:03 He's so calm about it.
08:05 He's not really a rah-rah,
08:07 but when game day comes,
08:10 you know he going to be there,
08:11 and you know he going to make some plays.
08:13 So just the type of player he is, like I said.
08:16 I mean, you don't really see that often.
08:19 And I'm really excited for what the future holds for him.
08:22 - Can you give us maybe a big picture view
08:26 of the vibe on offense after a game like that,
08:29 where I'm sure at some times it felt and looked ugly
08:33 on one hand, but on the other hand,
08:35 you did enough to win against what looks like
08:38 a pretty formidable defense.
08:41 - Oh yeah, it's a really sound defense.
08:43 So they run to the ball, they tackle well.
08:45 Really, really great team.
08:48 Really great coaches, and a really great coach over there.
08:51 But I mean, we have a standard for ourselves.
08:56 We set this bar high.
08:57 We want to be the best offense in the league.
09:00 We got a lot of playmakers,
09:01 and we know that everybody has the same mindset.
09:04 So when you come out of game like that,
09:07 I mean, we just look at the film and try to get better.
09:09 And we know we can get better.
09:11 So it starts during the week though,
09:13 just practicing, preparing throughout the week.
09:16 And that's how it shows up on Sunday.
