After the remarkable success of ISRO’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 and the Aditya-L1 mission to study the Sun, India is now preparing to launch the ‘Samudrayaan Mission’ to study the deep sea. Under the ‘Samudrayaan Mission’, a manned submersible is designed to be sent 6 kilometres under the deep ocean to study the deep ocean resources such as precious metals and minerals.

00:00 After the remarkable success of ISRO's lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 and the Aditya-1 mission
00:11 to study the sun, India is now preparing to launch the Samudrayaan mission to study the
00:17 deep sea.
00:18 Under the Samudrayaan mission, a manned submersible is designed to be sent 6 km under the deep
00:25 ocean to study the deep ocean resources such as precious metals and minerals.
00:32 The oceancraft Samudrayaan is being developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technologies
00:38 (NIOT) Chennai.
00:41 Which makes the mission more special is that this is India's first manned ocean exploration
00:47 mission.
00:48 The project is another sign that India wants to increase its clout globally as an innovator
00:55 in science and technology, particularly in space and other unexplored regions.
01:00 Here in Rijuju, the Earth Sciences Minister posted photos of the submersible on X, saying
01:08 the mission will send three people to a depth of 6 km, about 4 miles, and will not disturb
01:15 the ocean ecosystem.
01:18 This is Matsya 6000.
01:21 Under construction at National Institute of Ocean Technologies at Chennai, India's first
01:28 manned deep ocean mission, Samudrayaan plans to send three humans in 6 km ocean depth in
01:35 a submersible to study the deep sea resources and biodiversity assessments.
01:41 The project will not disturb the ocean ecosystem.
01:45 The deep ocean mission supports the Blue Economy vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
01:51 The mission envisages "sustainable utilization of ocean resources for economic growth of
01:57 the country, improve livelihoods and jobs, and preserve ocean ecosystem health," Rijuju
02:04 wrote on X.
02:05 What is the Samudrayaan mission?
02:09 The Samudrayaan mission is the first manned submersible mission of India that aims to
02:14 develop a submersible that will carry three people to a deep ocean depth of 6,000 m with
02:21 a suit of scientific sensors and tools of deep ocean exploration.
02:27 The mission has been developed with an endurance of 12 hours for normal operation and 96 hours
02:33 in case of an emergency.
02:36 Under the Samudrayaan mission, a submersible called Matsya 6000 will undergo trials in
02:41 the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Chennai in early 2024.
02:46 Currently, a team of scientists are looking into the design more cautiously after the
02:52 implosion of the Titan submersible which took tourists into the Titanic wreckage in the
02:58 North Atlantic Ocean in April this year.
03:01 Matsya 6000 is a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) which has been developed by the National
03:08 Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) Chennai, an autonomous institute under the Earth Science
03:15 Ministry.
03:16 According to the official information, the Matsya 6000 submersible's passenger will
03:22 include two lying prostrate and one operator of the titanium alloy, two with sand water
03:29 pressure.
03:30 The passengers will be communicating to the researchers through acoustic waves at 6,000
03:36 m as the pressure will be more than 600 times more than the pressure at sea level.
03:43 The main aim of the mission is to explore the deep oceans which have abundant mineral,
03:49 resources like polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich manganese crust and hydrothermal deposits.
03:57 Out of which, polymetallic nodules are valuable metals such as copper, cobalt, nickel and
04:04 manganese as per the National Institute of Ocean Technology.
04:08 The country expects to complete building the submersible by 2026 and it will have a
04:14 similar design to Ocean Gate's Titan which went missing near the Titanic's resting
04:19 place in the North Atlantic Ocean.
04:22 The US Coast Guard later announced that the submersible underwent a catastrophic implosion
04:28 that killed all five people on board, who were on an expedition to see the Titanic's
04:34 wreckage.
04:35 The news forced Ocean Gate to suspend all exploration and business operations.
