00:00 Hello, I'm Jason Jones and welcome to 3 Added Minutes' Fireside, a new series in which we
00:11 attempt to build the best possible five-man team based on some extremely specific requirements.
00:16 This week, we're going to come up with the best possible team based on the careers of
00:19 current Premier League managers. To help out, I'm joined by my 3 Added Minutes colleague,
00:23 Matthew Gregory.
00:24 Here's how this is going to happen. We take it in turns to propose a player for our team,
00:29 briefly argue about it, and then settle on which candidate will make it onto the pitch.
00:33 And of course, we do have to start with the goalkeeper. That is a bit tricky because there
00:36 is only one current Premier League manager who donned the gloves in the professional
00:40 game. So this is going to be a bit of a foregone conclusion to kick off. But to make it interesting,
00:45 I'm going to propose the actual goalkeeper and then Jason is going to propose the manager
00:49 he thinks, for whatever reason of his own choosing, would make the best goalkeeper or
00:54 just be the poor bloke who ends up in the Fireside team. Take your pick.
00:58 Anyway, that one goalkeeper, in case you were wondering, was Julian Lopetegui, the Wolves
01:03 manager. I mean, this is kind of an open and shut case. He played in goal. I think apart
01:07 from Nuno Espirito Santo, who is the only other manager I can think of who was a goalkeeper
01:11 during his professional tenure from the Premier League, certainly of recent years. He knows
01:15 how to put gloves on. Do I need to say anything more? Because he's the only manager who has
01:19 ever actually made a save in real life, unless someone went and kneck or someone got sent
01:23 off. But Rio Ferdinand isn't one of the managers in the current Premier League. So I'm going
01:27 to guess Lopetegui is our only decision here. Do you want to desperately try and make this
01:31 segment interesting, Jason? Who would you put forward instead of Lopetegui?
01:34 I mean, you know me, Matt, if I can make something interesting, I absolutely will. I think the
01:40 only one who comes remotely close to Lopetegui, because you are right, he is an absolute shoe
01:44 in here, is Unai Emery. Now, Unai Emery's father and grandfather were both professional
01:50 footballers and they were both professional goalkeepers. So I'm sort of just, you know,
01:56 using a little bit of common sense here and assuming that if it came down to it, the lad
02:00 could probably stop a shot, especially if we're talking like Power League standard,
02:05 like I play in that Power League and I do alright. So I'm guessing that Unai Emery
02:09 could probably do a decent enough job, you know. I do sort of wonder what happened to
02:15 him though, where he decided that the goalkeeping life wasn't for him. Maybe he's just not an
02:19 absolute masochist, but you know, I think if it does come down to it, we are going to
02:23 have to go with Lopetegui, aren't we? Like you say, he's the only one, you know, there's
02:29 no better feeling than being picked as one of one, I think, is there?
02:34 I mean, when you mentioned Unai Emery, I assumed you thought he'd be a goalkeeper because he's
02:38 so nice that he'd be the poor lad who gets walked over every game and basically forced
02:43 to spend more time in net than anyone else because he's too nice to say no. I mean, what
02:48 else can you say? I didn't know he had goalkeeping genetics. I don't know if it is in the DNA.
02:53 Was your father and grandfather a goalkeeper in Power League level, Jason? I mean, that
02:56 could tell us.
02:57 I don't know about, I mean, probably not Power League, but I did once find a photo of me
03:03 granddad playing in net for Durham City. So maybe there is something to be said for it,
03:07 who knows? I should say it was like Durham City's City team or something, I should point
03:11 out, you know, because I'm quite that illustrious.
03:12 I mean, that still sort of speaks to a steady decline from you have the original goalkeeper,
03:15 then you have a son who can play in net a bit, and then you go down and like the third
03:19 generation that completely useless and end up playing in the local Power League.
03:25 I didn't say I was completely useless, Matthew. Never said I was completely useless.
03:28 No, no, you didn't. I did.
03:29 I did.
03:30 I did.
03:31 I did.
03:32 I did.
