Fire rages on at Dhaka's Mohammadpur Krishi Market for six hours

A massive fire broke out at Dhaka's Mohammadpur Krishi Market on Thursday, September 13, 2023, around 3:30 pm. The fire engulfed the entire market, destroying hundreds of shops and goods. Firefighters from 17 units of the fire service, along with the army, navy, air force, police and BGB, battled the blaze for six hours. The fire was brought under control at 9:25 pm, but not completely extinguished. No casualties have been reported so far.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire service faced a water crisis while trying to douse the flames. They had to bring water from the nearby Japan Garden City through pipes. The fire service media wing officer Shajahan Shikder said that they were searching every part of the market to ensure that there was no fire left.

The Mohammadpur Krishi Market is one of the largest wholesale markets in Dhaka, where vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and other items are sold. The market was crowded with traders and customers when the fire broke out. Many of them managed to escape, but some lost their valuables and belongings in the fire.

The market authorities and the shop owners have demanded compensation from the government for their losses. They also urged the government to take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
