00:00 And just jumping straight into things, I know off the court you're actually quite the art
00:03 fanatic and you are the latest guest curator for Sotheby's Contemporary Curated Sale, where
00:10 you picked out six pieces of artwork that kind of resonated the most with you.
00:16 Tell me a little bit about Sotheby's, some of the artists, and why their pieces stuck
00:20 with you.
00:21 Well yeah, I mean part of Sotheby's as a guest curator here in New York is something really
00:29 special.
00:30 I've seen some of the people that have done it before and it's super exciting to be selected
00:36 as somebody to do this and to select pieces that align with who I am, what my interests
00:41 are.
00:42 It's always exciting to see Sotheby's across the board, you know, with art, with watches,
00:48 with cars, with wine, etc, etc, you know, do these auctions.
00:52 I'm always very familiar with what they're doing, close with the number of people that
00:56 work there.
00:57 And in New York City there's just such an eclectic group and mix of people and artists
01:03 among those people that, you know, get me really excited about things like this.
01:07 So I'm very excited, like I said, to do this.
01:11 But some of the artists would be some of the greats like Cy Twombly, naturally, you know,
01:20 he's somebody that always pops up in some of the greatest of all time and somebody that
01:27 has always been, you know, kind of in my wheelhouse and somebody that has inspired me over time.
01:35 There's Anthony Gormley as well.
01:37 You know, he has sculptures and installations and public art, artworks that really, I guess
01:46 you could say, investigate the relationship with the human body in space.
01:52 So I think for me as an athlete, this is something that I said in the video as well, like as
01:58 an athlete, I think that I feel that and, you know, beg the question and ask the question
02:02 where do I fit in the world and how can I influence the people around me in a positive
02:08 way.
02:09 Ed Ruscha, I just saw his show at the MoMA.
02:14 Thank you to the Suffolk Beast team for helping me and making that happen and helping me understand
02:19 that it was actually on my birthday and not later in the month.
02:23 So I got to see that.
02:24 He's somebody that I've, Ed is somebody that I've developed somewhat of a friendship with.
02:30 He has a love affair with the American West, being from the West Coast and my family in
02:35 particular having sold the dream of the American West and specifically California.
02:42 His artwork has always resonated with me.
02:47 There's a lot of humor and wit within his work, I feel like, and his textual works always
02:56 feel like they're open for interpretation and I think that is always brought to the
03:02 forefront of so many, if not all of his paintings and drawings and artwork.
03:09 So that fluidity and the language that he works with is, I think, what I'm drawn to
03:17 most.
03:18 And then, you know, there's a number of others, I think, across the board, but I think another
03:24 one that I highlighted is Cindy Sherman.
03:28 She exposed some gender stereotypes that, you know, sorry, hold on guys, my dog is barking
03:37 here.
03:38 All right, come on.
03:46 She's going to jump up here.
03:51 So she explores the, I guess, the culturally accepted roles of, you know, women, especially
03:59 within the world that we live in now.
04:00 So that I think transcends any time, any era.
04:06 But also the photograph that we used for the curated sale, you know, reminds me of an old
04:14 Hitchcock film.
04:15 I think that's what really drew me to it and within the suspense of the work, like
04:21 Hitchcock worked with in his films, you know, in his mediums, but I thought having a photographer
04:27 in there, especially a very strong female photographer, was, you know, big for being
04:34 able to curate one of those six pieces.
