00:11 This is the unlawful distribution of explicit images or videos of individuals without their consent.
00:18 It is often posted to cause harm, embarrass or even blackmail victims.
00:23 So what is revenge pornography?
00:25 Revenge pornography is the unlawful sharing of explicit content of other individuals without their consent.
00:32 There are three major elements.
00:34 One, the existence of this content in the first place.
00:38 Two, publication of the said content.
00:41 Three, and most importantly, no consent given by the victim.
00:46 Most times, the rampant cause of such publication is the victim's refusal to grant specific requests of the perpetrator,
00:53 which may include absexual intercourse, obtain money, etc.
00:58 However, the underlying motive of the perpetrator is to get specific requests from the victim by way of blackmailing,
01:05 which causes distress to the victim.
01:08 Anyone with explicit content can be blackmailed by revenge pornography.
01:12 Revenge pornography is a breach of privacy, and people who have been targeted often feel ashamed, angry and even depressed.
01:20 Unfortunately, in our society, revenge porn victims are exposed to societal abuse, discrimination or even physical attacks.
01:29 Regrettably, the trauma and distress may be too much for the victim, and they may resort to suicides to escape the problems encountered.
01:38 So what do I do if I find myself a victim of revenge pornography?
01:42 The best way to approach any of these issues is to contact a lawyer, if possible one who specializes in cybercrime.
01:49 Revenge pornography is a criminal offense, although it may fall under several different categories,
01:54 like harassment, blackmail and violations under the Malicious Communication Act.
02:00 If the law is satisfied that the images were published to cause anxiety and distress, then the perpetrator is in for a ride with the law.
02:08 Victims of revenge pornography should not suffer in silence.
02:12 Reporting such incidents to law enforcement agencies is very essential.
02:17 Support organizations and helplines such as the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team can provide guardians and support to victims,
02:25 helping them navigate the legal and emotional challenges they may face.
02:30 Revenge porn is a harmful and distressing practice that violates the privacy and dignity of individuals.
02:36 Fortunately, the Nigerian law recognizes the gravity of this offense and provides legal avenues for justice.
