00:00 Aside from rice, electricity and oil,
00:02 some products are also expensive
00:05 because of the high price of 7 pesos
00:08 of some manufacturers.
00:10 Along with the DTI's appeal,
00:12 the Congress has decided to increase the cost.
00:16 This is now in the joint effort of
00:18 Tina Pangiliban Perez and Bernadette Reyes.
00:21 Instead of 50 pesos per kilo of rice,
00:27 noodles are only 8 pesos per kilo
00:30 that are being sold by the Luz family.
00:32 It's hard to buy rice,
00:34 so we only buy noodles and sardines.
00:38 But what now?
00:39 Some manufacturers are asking for 10 centavos
00:41 up to 7 pesos more
00:42 for sardines, noodles and coffee,
00:46 as well as salt-canned meat and bottled water.
00:49 About 14 manufacturers
00:52 requested price adjustments.
00:57 Raw materials, the labels, the ingredients,
01:01 that's the reason for asking for higher prices.
01:08 Next week, DTI will ask manufacturers
01:11 to discuss ways to reduce their production costs
01:16 so that the prices of their products don't go up.
01:21 DTI will discuss how to reduce the price
01:24 until the end of the year.
01:25 We're more than willing to talk to them
01:27 and cooperate with them
01:29 and see how we can make our operations more efficient.
01:31 At the end of the day, we don't want to increase.
01:34 To be able to raise the prices,
01:37 Congress has proposed
01:39 legislative wage hikes
01:41 from P150 to P750.
01:44 The Senate approved it in December.
01:48 The Employers Confederation of the Philippines, or ECOP,
01:53 is discussing how to reduce the wage hike
01:56 for small companies that can't pay the wage hike.
01:57 There are only three options.
01:59 They can raise the prices if the market can afford it,
02:04 or they can reduce the number of employees
02:06 so that they can pay the wage hike.
02:08 If those two options are not possible,
02:10 they can close the company.
02:11 It's better if the regional tripartite wage boards
02:15 are the ones to decide on the wage hike.
02:17 According to the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry,
02:22 or FFCCCII,
02:25 it is not controlled by the businessmen
02:27 to raise the prices of electricity, water, and oil.
02:30 If the labor cost is raised,
02:32 the first thing that the businessmen will do
02:36 is to look at how we can stop hiring.
02:40 According to the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
02:42 the unemployment rate is 5 to 6 percent now,
02:46 while the underemployment rate is 17 to 20 percent.
02:50 One of the solutions to the wage problem,
02:53 according to the FFCCCII,
02:55 is to encourage more people to move to the country.
02:59 If there are more opportunities for people to work,
03:02 the minimum wage will be raised.
03:04 Minimum wage should not be set.
03:06 For GMA Integrated News,
03:09 Tina Panganiban Perez.
03:10 And I am Buenaventure Reyes.
03:12 We learned 24 hours.
