Here are three things the NEw York Giants must seek to do if they are to pull off a win against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2.
Transcript
00:00 One game, win or lose, does not a season make.
00:03 But for the New York Giants, who are coming off a 40 to nothing,
00:06 error-filled, lackluster showing against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night football,
00:11 well, they had better get things turned around and turned around quickly.
00:15 So what do the Giants need to do to top the Arizona Cardinals,
00:19 who narrowly lost their week one opener to the Commanders?
00:23 Here are our three keys for the game.
00:26 Key number one, set the tone against the Cardinals run.
00:30 Last week, Connor led the Cardinals in rushing with 62 yards on 14 carries,
00:36 a 4.4 per carry average.
00:39 The Giants run defense, which is supposed to be better this year,
00:42 they gave up 122 yards on the ground to Dallas on 30 carries,
00:46 including three touchdowns.
00:48 That has them currently tied for 24th in the league against the run,
00:52 in essence picking up where they left off last year when they finished 27th.
00:57 And that cannot continue moving forward if the Giants wanna start winning games.
01:02 Key number two, block.
01:04 Sounds simple, right?
01:06 This week, the Giants will probably be without left tackle Andrew Thomas,
01:10 who is nursing a hamstring strain.
01:12 There was also a report by New Jersey Advanced Media that Mark Lewinsky,
01:17 who had the worst game of his NFL career last week against the Cowboys,
01:21 is headed to the bench in favor of Marcus McAfeen.
01:24 And the Giants have been trying to figure out how to address the ongoing problems
01:30 that right tackle Evan Neal has had.
01:33 If the Giants can't figure all this out and we see a repeat against the Cardinals
01:37 defense that while not on the same level as the Cowboys, but
01:40 which did record six sacks last week against the Commanders,
01:44 it's going to be another long day for the New York Giants.
01:48 Key number three, stick with the running game.
01:52 Now last week, it's fair to say that the Giants got away from
01:55 running the ball a little too prematurely.
01:57 This despite having some early game success.
02:00 And the likely reason for that was that they fell into the hole 16-0 after
02:06 one quarter of play.
02:07 Now that can't happen again.
02:09 That being giving up on the running game so early.
02:13 New York is 2-10 when running back Siquon Barkley gets 15 or
02:16 fewer touches in his career.
02:18 The Giants can potentially get things back on track by going to more 12 personnel and
02:24 featuring the running game with both Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones.
02:28 Something which should hopefully open things up for the passing game.
02:32 Now since the NFL expanded its postseason in 1990,
02:35 only 41.8% of the teams that began their season one and
02:39 one have reached the playoffs in that span.
02:42 But it's worth noting that the Giants in that same time span started
02:46 0-2 in 2007, yet managed to turn things around and
02:50 route to a Super Bowl championship.
02:52 That's not to say that this 2023 team is on par with the 2017,
02:56 the latter having a much more stable offensive line amongst other things.
03:01 But the Giants sure could make things a lot easier if they right the ship this week
03:06 and build a little momentum ahead of a big Thursday night game against the 49ers
03:10 four days later.
