Instant Analysis: No. 10 Alabama 17, USF 3

00:00 For Vannessinswil.com, I'm Katie Windup here with Austin Cannon and
00:02 Blake Beiler after Alabama's 17-3 victory over USF here in Tampa.
00:08 With instant analysis here on the field of Rainy Day in the stadium.
00:11 Austin, definitely more of a left scoring game than people expected, but
00:14 what's your biggest takeaway from the game?
00:16 >> Good question.
00:19 I think the defense was good, and that was a good sign because last week,
00:22 obviously, that was the biggest issue probably,
00:24 other than turn the ball over and penalties was defense.
00:27 Obviously, not as big of a test today against USF in an offense that's a little
00:31 inexperienced.
00:32 I think you could tell early on they weren't very comfortable in their
00:35 quarterback throwing the ball downfield.
00:37 And a lot of quarterback draws, but Alabama was able to get pressure.
00:40 They didn't do that last week.
00:42 Kool-Aid got an interception, but obviously, they got ruled back.
00:44 >> Malachi Moore had an interception.
00:45 >> Malachi Moore had an interception on a pretty terrible throw.
00:48 But the defense was good, and they made strides.
00:52 The offense, obviously, has a lot of work to do,
00:54 regardless of who the quarterback is.
00:56 Especially with the offensive line.
00:58 But they won the game.
00:59 I mean, Nick Saban said that in the press room just now that they were happy to win
01:01 the game, and he hopes the players are happy to win the game.
01:04 But they've got a lot of work to do,
01:05 especially because the SEC season starts next week.
01:07 >> Yeah, Blake, what do we make this quarterback situation a quarter of
01:11 the way through the regular season?
01:13 >> That's the question.
01:14 I mean, I think the answer is that we don't know.
01:16 You started with Jalen Millrow, you had him for two games.
01:19 He had some really good flashes.
01:22 He had some games like against Texas where he had some bad mistakes.
01:25 Ended up losing the job.
01:26 Tyler Buckner starts today.
01:28 He goes 5 of 14 in the first half,
01:29 and though getting pulled before the end of the first half.
01:32 Really struggled, didn't look very comfortable in the pocket.
01:34 There were rainy conditions, so maybe that played into it.
01:37 Didn't have great protection, couldn't complete many passes down the field.
01:40 So he gets replaced by Ty Simpson, who looks okay for the most part.
01:44 He had the nice, I think it was 45 yard completion to CJ Dupree down the middle
01:49 of the field in the third quarter, which was Alabama's first touchdown drive.
01:53 Kind of sparked that drive.
01:54 So I thought he looked okay, but
01:56 also he was getting thrown on his back just about every other play.
01:59 He got sacked five times, all five of USF's sacks came against Ty Simpson.
02:03 They had one of their defensive linemen had a record day,
02:06 three sacks, career best for him.
02:09 So I really think we're just gonna have to take it day by day,
02:12 probably like this Alabama team is.
02:13 I don't think we've seen enough to be able to know who the guy is going forward.
02:16 I don't think Coach Saban has seen that either.
02:18 So we don't know who's gonna start against Ole Miss on Saturday,
02:23 which is kind of crazy thinking we're going into week four not knowing who
02:26 the guy is gonna be.
02:27 But that's just kind of the reality of how the season has been.
02:30 >> Right, so after the game, Saban said Alabama will evaluate all three guys and
02:33 they'll have stuff to look at from all three guys.
02:35 Now that they've all played with first team snaps in real games,
02:39 not that they've played fake games, but you all know what I mean.
02:41 In a real game like situation when the game is still on the line, but
02:44 like you said, we don't know who'll be quarterback for
02:47 Alabama on Saturday against Ole Miss.
02:50 But like Saban said too, Alabama ultimately comes out with a victory.
02:54 Not a pretty game at all, lots of things still to fix.
02:56 The Alabama win, 17 to 3.
02:58 That'll wrap up our excellent analysis here from Raymond James Stadium.
03:01 But there'll be plenty more coverage from the program central throughout
03:03 the weekend, so be sure to check that out.
