00:00 the game we know we're gonna see tonight.
00:05 A lot of things that we got, we have to clean up.
00:08 As far as missed tackles, substitution errors, and things like that.
00:16 So we will get those things cleaned up and we're moving on,
00:22 looking forward to starting the Big Ten play.
00:24 But we still have a lot of goals in front of us, so that's our mindset right now.
00:28 >> All right, we got questions on both sides.
00:31 Max, start with Jack.
00:32 >> At age 713 yards, that's the most the Michigan State team has ever given up.
00:40 What was it that Washington was doing that you couldn't deal with?
00:43 >> First of all, give them credit, they're a good football team.
00:49 Didn't realize that, I'll never forget that though.
00:52 First time being a head coach in a game and I remember all of this.
00:56 I promise you, I'll remember every single one.
00:59 I'm good at it.
01:00 But the quarterback and the receivers and the OCR,
01:05 you can tell they have a real good understanding of that offense.
01:11 They know where to be, they trust each other.
01:14 The receivers have great hands, they go up and get the ball, but they have strong hands.
01:19 And a quarterback, good player, knows where to go with the ball.
01:23 They've probably seen all kinds of different schemes over the years, so
01:26 they vibe well together.
01:29 And credit to them, they did it.
01:31 And cuz we definitely went into the game thinking, hey, this is what we have to do.
01:35 We thought we had a well-oiled plan, but not good enough.
01:43 >> Hi, everyone acknowledges that today is a big day.
01:46 Earlier this week, you did acknowledge your faith.
01:49 How does your faith play a role in this and
01:50 how do you impart that onto your players during today's experience?
01:53 >> That's a good question.
01:55 My faith should be never a waiver and it isn't.
02:01 Out there a couple times almost, almost, almost, but
02:05 that's never gonna change you.
02:08 You go up and down, you're faithful.
02:10 If you truly into the world like I am and I say that and I profess that I am,
02:15 there are ups and downs.
02:17 There's the valleys you hit, all right, as well as the mountaintops.
02:20 So this is a valley moment.
02:23 This is a valley moment.
02:24 And the good thing about it is you can always come back from valley moments if
02:28 you truly believe and trust and
02:31 then start to work on the things that need to be worked on.
02:35 So valley moment right now, but we'll get back up to them.
02:39 >> Matt.
02:40 >> Garland, for all the turmoil this week, the build up to this game,
02:46 you come out, everybody's obviously a crowd that's very supportive of you.
02:49 When you go in a locker room down 35 to nothing, what do you tell the team?
02:53 What's the attitude?
02:54 And I guess how do you think they handled, looking back on this whole week,
02:58 all that was put up in play, and for you personally, obviously.
03:01 >> Right, when I came in at halftime,
03:03 cuz I'm always trying to put a positive twist on something.
03:07 I mean, you can't just lose your mind and then they go further in the dumps.
03:12 So you try to put some type of positive spin on something.
03:16 So I just say, one play at a time, six seconds of play, keep chopping.
03:20 That's what I said to them, one play at a time.
03:23 Just don't try to get it all back at once.
03:25 Just one play at a time, six seconds of play, keep chopping.
03:30 And say it to each other over and over and over.
03:32 And that's all we could do at that point.
03:34 And that's what we tried to come back out and do in the second half, but
03:37 still not really.
03:38 And so, again, I have to be better.
03:42 I will be better, and the team will be better going into the Big Ten season.
03:48 >> Chris.
03:49 >> All right, I'm gonna, I think 536 passing yards allowed in particular from
03:54 the secondary and the pride that's there.
03:58 What do you think needs to change and be fixed with that?
04:02 Cuz there have been a number of games the last few years like that.
04:06 And I guess, moving forward and looking at that guy in the other room,
04:11 what did Panic's, and how good is it to not have to worry about seeing him again?
04:15 >> That would be real good.
04:17 He's a guy that's in the Heisman Trophy, can you see right now?
04:22 There are a few things that we can change up probably on how we scheme things,
04:29 that we have the defense to do it.
04:31 It's a matter of what we wanna call and play.
04:33 We thought we had the right things dialed up for this week, and
04:38 apparently they weren't.
04:40 So we'll tweak some things and
04:42 try to help us to not give up those type of yards again, ever.
04:47 And so I'm actually ready to focus in on Maryland so
04:53 much so that just watching tonight and
04:58 start focusing on those guys, so we can be better.
05:05 >> Steve.
05:06 >> I'm just wondering what you saw and heard from your staff as well about
05:10 offensively.
05:10 It seemed like Noah was maybe under more pressure lately than we've seen the past
05:14 couple games, and the running game just wasn't able to get going as well.
05:17 Your overall takeaways on that side.
05:19 >> Right, exactly.
05:20 We couldn't, what they say, stay on schedule.
05:24 You wanna run the ball or whatever your first down pass would be.
05:28 Just to keep you on schedule.
05:29 If you're not on schedule, if you can't get the three yards or
05:33 what have you on first down, now you're off schedule.
05:36 They kept getting us off schedule and
05:38 caused us problems when we got off schedule.
05:41 Again, very good team.
05:43 But the good experience is just to see what top ten teams look like right now for
05:51 our team.
05:52 So they see, okay, we see what a top ten team looks like.
05:57 And so now we know what we have to do to start preparing.
06:01 If we wanna be that type of team or better, we have to start preparing like that.
06:06 We know we've seen it.
06:08 No disrespect to Richmond and Central, but
06:11 that was a different group as everybody saw out there.
06:14 And our guys saw it themselves.
06:16 So as I spoke with them, they were like, hey man, we gotta be better.
06:21 They were saying that after I spoke with them.
06:23 Okay, we did things that we haven't done.
06:25 And you heard leaders stepping up.
06:28 Everybody be somewhere, be here, blah, blah, blah, tomorrow.
06:32 Everybody, da, da, da, this week.
06:33 And so that was good to see.
06:37 >> Okay, over here.
06:39 Now that you've been through it, sort of in hindsight,
06:41 can you speak to what this week was like for you and this team?
06:45 And how disruptive and difficult it was?
06:47 And any challenges as a first week head coach?
06:51 In week three of a season that you sort of ran into,
06:54 that you could have known about until you're actually in that role?
06:58 >> Well, I think you have challenges anytime around
07:04 on when you start something new that you haven't done.
07:07 So not so much so that it was week three, it could have been week one.
07:12 I got hired back in January or whatever.
07:14 There were things that I just hadn't been happy enough to deal with.
07:21 I had to do a press conference during the week when I was just
07:26 defensive back coach or secondary coach, what have you.
07:29 And so there were a lot of different things that came about, but
07:32 it's gonna all settle down this week.
07:36 I know that, and we'll get back.
07:38 I've got some things in my mind that I wanna do as far as me coaching and
07:44 try to normalize us again, where this past week we were off kilter a little bit.
07:51 But we still got enough coaches to get it done.
07:53 But I'm gonna get myself back like I need to be doing and helping.
07:58 And I think that'll be better for the team as well.
08:01 >> Coach, you were, to follow what Graham said,
08:06 were thrown into the situation now that the head coach.
08:10 After a game like tonight, how do you galvanize this team,
08:13 get them back together, and how do you put the imprint that this is now your team?
08:18 >> One is like I told him in there, okay, look man, no more penalties like this.
08:26 And we can't be having those type of penalties, substitution errors,
08:30 missed tackles and things like that.
08:31 Can't shoot ourselves in the foot, can't beat ourselves.
08:35 And so I told him, I said, as the leader, as the number one leader here,
08:39 I have to be better and I will be better.
08:43 And how I'll do that is kind of like I was just saying to Graham.
08:47 This past week, I had a lot of time away from just the football aspect,
08:51 trying to connect with the guys more.
08:53 And I still gotta finish up some of those guys, but
08:56 I'm gonna try to get back to what I was doing and
08:58 normalize us a little bit and for the young men as well.
09:01 And that way, everybody's back to normal roles a little bit, if I can say that.
09:08 And we can just do what we have to do.
09:10 So when that happens, I think it'll be better for us.
09:15 And we are a week away from what happened.
09:19 So those guys are, there's an out there system, we play the game,
09:22 play a really great team.
09:24 And so I think they're ready to go and understanding that, hey,
09:27 all our goals are still in front of us.
09:28 So that's a good thing.
09:29 >> You have a second round?
09:33 >> Coach, Darius Snow, finally back from that injury.
09:38 How excited are you to have him back to that defense and
09:41 what do you think he's gonna be adding to that new role?
09:43 >> I'm very excited that he's back.
09:45 I love me some Darius Snow, Mr. Snow Flurry is what I call him.
09:48 But he's a very, very, very smart football player.
09:53 And he's tough, and a good tackler.
09:55 And so he was so excited when he got cleared last week,
09:58 running around telling everybody, I'm cleared, I'm cleared.
10:00 He came up busting our defensive staff room, I'm cleared, I'm cleared, I can play.
10:05 And so really, really happy for him, cuz he busted his butt to be able to get back.
10:09 Cuz there was that one time, saying he wouldn't be able to get back to midseason.
10:13 And so he really, really busted his butt, and he's gonna help us.
10:19 >> Matt, you had a question?
10:21 >> Harlan, real quick, do you have an update on Tanyo, obviously?
10:24 >> I did, when I went in, I just talked to the players, and
10:28 then I pretty much came over here, so I didn't get an update, yeah.
10:31 >> I was wondering with Jaron and Berger out, there's a lot,
10:37 and even Martinez, it's a lot to ask a short handed backfield to manage it.
10:42 I guess, how much that lack of depth,
10:45 kind of do you think affect your performance on the run game?
10:48 >> Well, every guy that would come here, including myself,
10:53 I would say there's no excuses.
10:55 So even those guys would say that, there's no excuses.
10:59 We gotta just get it done, find a way to get it done.
11:02 We had the guys that we had, and so we gotta perform.
11:06 It's just that simple, it really is.
11:08 >> Chris, last one.
11:10 Along those lines, Tamesha and Ken, we didn't see them get hurt last week.
11:15 What is their status with the program?
11:19 >> They'll be back this week, they were just out this week.
11:22 >> Okay. >> We just had them out this week,
11:23 but they'll be back.
11:24 >> And have you had anybody with the situation that's happened that has
11:29 approached you to say, we wanna shut it down up to now?
11:32 Has anybody said they wanna shut it down and not play anymore the rest of the year
11:36 with the uncertainty with the coaching situation?
11:38 >> Nobody has said that, not one guy, not one guy have said that.
11:42 So that's a good thing, and hopefully these guys won't do that.
11:47 They'll look, hey, let's finish this thing out.
11:50 You never wanna be a quitter, you know what I mean?
11:52 So hopefully everybody will push through and see what's really in front of us.
11:56 Like we said, all our goals are still in front of us, and so
11:58 let's go attack the Big Ten season.
12:00 >> All right, thank you.
12:03 >> Yes.
