00:00 I don't think I've seen you since the Met Gala
00:02 when you told me, I said,
00:03 "Why are you sneaking out of here so early?"
00:04 And you said, "Well, Anna Wintour,
00:06 she sat me behind a pole."
00:07 - Yeah.
00:08 - How dare, Anna?
00:10 You say that you were in your love era.
00:12 (upbeat music)
00:14 This is the first time we're hearing music from you
00:16 in what, 13 years?
00:19 - Yes.
00:19 - Why was now the right time?
00:21 "Last Train to Paris" was your last album.
00:23 Now we've got the "Love" album off the grid.
00:25 Why was now the right time?
00:26 - I mean, I just think that, you know,
00:28 we all go through life's journeys
00:29 and I kind of put my creativity and my music on hold.
00:32 You know, I had a moment in my life where I was like,
00:35 you know, what do you want to do that makes you happy?
00:37 And number one thing I love to do is make music.
00:39 And so, it's been 13 years
00:42 and it's been like really like cooking and marinating.
00:47 It doesn't sound like 13 years though.
00:49 It sounds fresh and new.
00:51 So it just sounds like a new era.
00:53 Why am I doing this?
00:55 You know what I'm saying?
00:56 Especially with the success that I've had.
00:59 How stressful and treacherous this music industry is.
01:02 My heart has been broken.
01:06 I still got that question of like,
01:08 am I going to love again?
01:10 - And I want to talk about the trailer for the album.
01:12 In the trailer, you ask, why am I doing this?
01:14 Then you go on to say that your heart has been broken
01:17 and you're wondering if you'll ever love again.
01:20 So how did this help you heal that broken heart of yours?
01:24 - Ah man, I always said that I can't make a hit record
01:28 unless my heart is broken.
01:29 It's just like a feeling.
01:31 It's just like a vulnerable state that you're in.
01:33 And so, you know, when I lost Kim,
01:35 like it broke my heart forever.
01:37 So then I was just like, you know,
01:40 I just wanted to turn it into something positive.
01:43 You know what I'm saying?
01:44 You got to watch what you ask for.
01:45 - How does she still inspire your music?
01:47 You have a track on this album titled Kim Porter.
01:50 Babyface, John Legend, lend themselves
01:53 and their talents for this track.
01:54 So how is she continuing to inspire your music
01:57 and her memory?
01:58 - I mean, I had always made music for her, you know,
02:02 and always embraced her love to like kind of,
02:06 you know, make my music.
02:07 And so when I put a song on here and I was thinking
02:10 about her, it was really thinking about before
02:12 there was the internet and how long like I would wait
02:15 when she would break up with me,
02:17 how long like I would have to wait like seven days.
02:19 Like she would just go completely off the grid.
02:21 There was no way like to track your girlfriend or nothing.
02:24 You know what I'm saying?
02:24 And I'm just sitting by the phone and calling her mother.
02:27 - Kim, come on.
02:28 - Her mother's like,
02:29 "I don't know what you're talking about, Sean.
02:30 "I don't know where she's at."
02:31 And she's probably right there.
02:33 And so I got with Babyface and John Legend.
02:35 I said, I told him the story.
02:36 And so Babyface wrote, you know,
02:39 "Six days, seven nights waiting for your sound."
02:43 And that's the way I love.
02:45 - So what's the answer to that question?
02:48 Will you ever find love again?
02:49 Do you think you'll be able to find love again?
02:51 Are you in love again?
02:53 - Um, I ask myself that question every day,
02:56 but I still believe that I will.
02:58 I'm not like looking at it in a negative way.
03:00 I just don't know.
03:01 I don't know what the future holds, you know?
03:03 And so I could,
03:05 I gotta be happy for the love that I felt.
03:07 I can't chase the love that I had, you know?
03:09 And so it's just like a real question,
03:12 you know what I'm saying?
03:12 Am I gonna find that level of love again?
03:16 And, you know,
03:18 and that's what the future holds, you know?
03:21 - Well, so give it to me straight though, Diddy.
03:23 What kind of love is Diddy looking for these days?
03:26 - I really don't know.
03:27 - You don't know even after going through this?
03:29 - Yeah, after going, no,
03:30 after going through that, it's a new type of love.
03:32 I can't bring my past love life
03:35 into somebody that I would meet new,
03:38 you know what I'm saying?
03:38 So, I mean, whatever the love is,
03:41 it's gonna be a new experience, you know?
