What do the people say about the new 20mph laws?

  • last year
Politicians are no strangers to controversial policies, with all number of opinions on whether they’re positive, whether they’ll work or whether they should never have been put into law. The new 20mph speed limit across Wales is certainly one of those policies. People see the benefits, people see the draw backs, so we speak to the people of Cardiff to find out what they have to say on the issue.

00:00 I just don't see the point in it to be fair because it's going to impact so many people.
00:06 So it's like taxi drivers, like delivery drivers, even down to people in like drive lorries
00:14 and stuff. It's going to affect everyone and I don't think the government have thought
00:18 that through properly at all.
00:20 I don't think it's a bad thing, I think it's good actually. I think it's safe. Kids being
00:29 run, you know, cats, dogs, it's all safe. Don't see what's wrong with it.
00:36 It's a hard one to go against because it's like, it's just, another thing as well that
00:41 they haven't thought about is it's going to cause more pollution as well because with
00:46 everyone now you won't be able to go after second gear in your car so you're going to
00:50 be burning more fuel and I know that's the one thing the government have said they wanted
00:54 to do was stop pollution and they're just not doing that so I don't get it.
00:57 It's very slow when you first start driving at that speed but at the end of the day, yeah,
01:02 it's overall it's negligible. It's just a little bit slower and I think it's safer.
01:10 I think it's safer, yeah.
01:12 Personally, I don't think it was needed as a blanket. Around schools, certain areas,
01:18 yeah, absolutely agree with it but probably not as a blanket, in my opinion.
01:23 I heard it damages your car a bit, keeping it in low gear and trying to maintain a 20
01:28 mile per hour speed. I drive a car myself on the main roads in Cardiff. I've got used
01:35 to it over the last couple of months but with the new implications today it's probably going
01:39 to be a little bit more difficult for everyone. I think it's caused an uproar. I've seen things
01:43 on social media where people are against it. Obviously it must be saving some lives and
01:48 it's a bit better for pollution.
01:52 I do drive through Wales quite regularly where there's already been existing 20 mile an hour
02:00 limits and here it's not a problem. It's not a problem.
02:04 Absolutely not, no, I don't think so. I think if anything, I mean some of the places I was
02:09 driving around through the country roads have all of a sudden gone to 20 when realistically
02:13 they're probably about 40 miles in my opinion. So I think it's just going to slow us down.
02:18 As far as pollution goes, yeah, and safety, I think it's necessary but I don't know, they
02:24 seem to have implemented it right throughout Wales, don't they? So it's not just one space,
02:28 it's right throughout. I'm more concerned with what it's going to be like in the future
02:33 really because people, how long they'll put up with it. I mean it's cost a lot of money
02:37 to implement and I don't know how long it'll take before people start rising up and going
02:41 against it but whether they'll be able to get it to go back to normal speed, I doubt
02:45 it very much.
02:46 If you looked online to see people's opinions, you'd be forgiven to think that the whole
02:50 country was up in arms over the idea. But speaking to people in Cardiff here today,
02:54 many people do see the benefits. Whether it will work as we get used to the new speed
02:58 limits, only time will tell. James Page Watkins, Local TV, Cardiff.
