00:03 - Is a frequent collaborator and lifelong friend of John's
00:07 who has appeared in all of John's feature films.
00:10 Please help me welcome to the stage, Mink Stoll.
00:15 (audience cheering)
00:18 - Hello.
00:28 I was a clueless 19 year old when I met John
00:33 and he was an as yet unmoustached 20.
00:37 I was drawn to him immediately because he was so smart,
00:42 so funny, so confident, and so totally unlike anyone
00:46 that I had ever met.
00:48 What I didn't realize that he was totally unlike anyone
00:52 that anybody had ever met.
00:55 Or how lucky that meeting would be for me.
00:59 A few months later, as John and I were walking
01:01 around Baltimore putting up handmade flyers
01:04 in phone booths and laundromats to attract an audience
01:08 for a church basement screening of Roman Candles,
01:12 a film that needed three eight millimeter projectors
01:15 and a tape recorder to show,
01:18 I didn't know if anybody would come to see it,
01:21 but they did.
01:22 We sold it out and they loved it.
01:25 (audience cheering)
01:29 As the films grew technologically better,
01:33 the audiences grew with them.
01:35 They grew in size, in diversity, and in devotion.
01:40 Now I don't know how John's brain works.
01:44 I don't know how he comes up with characters
01:46 like the egg lady who lives in a crib in her underwear.
01:50 Or cereal mom who murders to avenge society's missteps.
01:55 But I don't care.
01:58 What I do know is that John is brilliant,
02:02 he is decent, unfailingly decent,
02:05 and he is the hardest working man in show business.
02:09 (audience cheering)
02:12 I am proud of the work that I've done with John,
02:15 but I have to tell you that I am far more proud
02:19 of the fact that for well over half a century,
02:23 he has been my friend.
02:26 John, I love you to pieces, and I am so happy for you.
02:30 Congratulations on this.
02:33 Thank you very much.
02:34 (audience cheering)
02:37 (audience applauding)
02:40 (applause)
02:43 (whooshing)
