00:12 The warplane went missing on Sunday afternoon after a pilot ejected from the aircraft for
00:17 unknown reasons.
00:19 According to the Marine Corps' Joint Base Charleston, the debris field from the F-35B
00:24 Lightning II jet was located on Monday in South Carolina's rural Williamsburg County.
00:30 Personnel from Joint Base Charleston and MCAS Beaufort, in close coordination with local
00:35 authorities, have located a debris field in Williamsburg County.
00:39 The debris was discovered two hours northeast of JB Charleston.
00:43 The base also thanked local, county and state officials for their help in the hunt for the
00:48 missing stealth fighter plane.
00:50 As per reports, the debris was located about two hours northeast of the Marine base and
00:54 local residents were being asked to stay clear of the site.
00:58 Marine Corps' Joint Base Charleston issued a warning, saying that members of the community
01:02 should avoid the area as the recovery team secures the debris field.
01:06 They said that they are transferring incident command to the USMC or US Marine Corps in
01:11 the evening as they begin the recovery process.
01:14 Authorities had been searching for the jet since the pilot, whose name has not been released,
01:18 parachuted to safety into a north Charleston neighborhood at about 2pm local time on Sunday.
01:24 The aircraft reportedly continued flying in what some called a "zombie state."
01:28 The Marines said that the pilot was taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition.
01:33 Military officials later appealed in online posts for any help from the public in locating
01:38 the aircraft, which cost approximately $80 million.
01:42 All Marine Corps aviation units were also ordered on Monday to pause operations for
01:47 two days.
01:48 The acting commandant of the Marine Corps, General Eric Smith, ordered the stand-down
01:52 during which commanders will reinforce safe flying policies, practices and procedures
01:56 with their Marines.
01:57 According to a Marine Corps announcement, the loss of the F-35 was the third event documented
02:02 as a Class A mishap over the past six weeks.
02:05 Reports revealed that such incidents involve damages that reach at least a cost of $2.5
02:10 million when a Department of Defense aircraft is destroyed or someone dies or is permanently
02:15 disabled.
02:16 According to manufacturer Lockheed Martin, a key advantage of the F-35 is its near impossibility
02:22 to be tracked by radar and its advanced sensors and other equipment.
