Introduced with PHEV Options Offering a Range of Up to 62 Miles, New Volkswagen Tiguan 2024

In Europe, the Tiguan PHEV is offered in mild hybrid and turbodiesel options.

The third generation Volkswagen Tiguan was unveiled in Europe. It will arrive in the United States next year with a long-wheelbase version of the vehicle's body.

The exterior design is familiar but features touches reminiscent of the ID.4 EV, particularly the closed-top grille. The model uses the MQB Evo platform with front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as an option.

At least in Europe, VW is offering many new powertrain options. The US's preferences are still a secret.

There are two plug-in hybrid options with a total power of 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) or 268 hp (200 kW). These models also use a 19.7 kilowatt-hour battery that can provide up to 100 kilometers of range on electricity alone. The AC charger now supports 11 kW, and the vehicle can accept up to 50 kW of power when connected to a DC fast charger.

There are also mild hybrid equipped options available. The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder is connected to a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a 48-volt starter/generator. Disabling the cylinder could allow the engine to run on two pistons.

The third-generation Tiguan also offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 201 hp (150 kW) or 262 hp (195 kW).

Turbodiesel options are also still available. There is a 2.0-liter tune that produces 148 hp (110 kW) or 190 hp (142 kW).

Technology upgrades include an adaptive chassis control system that improves upon existing technology. It works with electronic differential locks. There are also two-valve shocks with an adapted control algorithm.

Inside, Volkswagen offers a new digital instrument display layout and an updated infotainment system. The company's MIB graphic design follows those currently used in the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7. Drivers can choose between view modes.

Tiguan's available safety systems include adaptive cruise control, hill start assist, park distance control, lane keep assist, lane change assist and more.

Technical details of the US-spec Tiguan are not yet available. We expect this information to arrive closer to the vehicle's US launch.
