A tree decorated with several thousand keys gives energy to passers-by. Newlyweds looking for the key to family happiness also leave their traces on its trunk. Looking at this tree, it would be hard to believe that it has survived several fires and devastation by malicious people. The ash was already marked for felling, but Algirdas Jonušis, a ceramicist from Panevėžys, decided not to allow it to be done. The artist knew the history of this tree and saw that it was truly unique, so he decided to turn it into a city landmark. It is no accident that the keys started hanging on this tree. After the excavations, a box with seventy keys was found near the ash tree, so they were all locked together. According to the ceramist, keys in ancient times had more than just a practical meaning for people. So-called symbolic keys are still found. They were not made to lock locks, but hung in a visible place of the house as a kind of family protection, a protective amulet. The tree of keys is now of great interest to newlyweds, who no longer hang locks on bridges, but come to Birutė street to hang keys, believing that this will bring good luck. However, this unique tree is also of interest to those looking for a different kind of luck.
