00:00 Political observers have dismissed the likelihood of a change in government in Pahang through
00:06 defections given the absence of the anti-hopping law in the state.
00:11 This comes amid recent speculation that a big win for Perikatan National in the Pelangai
00:15 Bayi election could embolden the opposition to pressure Barisan National Assembly to switch
00:20 sides and help them form a new state government.
00:24 Currently, BN holds 17 seats in the 42-member state assembly, while BN has 16 and leads
00:31 the state unity government with the support of the eight Assemblymen from Pakatan Harapan.
00:37 According to former Klang MP Charles Santiago, talk of representatives jumping ship may have
00:42 been sparked by recent reports that Pahang BN Chief Wan Rosliwan Ismail, who is Menteri
00:48 Besar, was seen meeting with Persatu President Moeden Yassin.
00:52 However, he said it is unlikely that Assemblymen will switch parties even if the opposition
00:58 wins the Pelangai seat.
01:00 Political analyst Azmi Hasan of Akademi Nusantara concurred.
01:04 He said that although the past-led BN is making a serious push to win the seat to show that
01:09 Malays had deserted UMNO, there does not appear to be any strong desire by any BN or PH representative
01:16 to switch over.
01:18 Sociopolitical analyst Awang Azman Paui of University Malaya also agreed with both Santiago
01:23 and Azmi, saying the people and royalty would prefer political stability instead of the
01:29 disruption caused by more change.
