We caught up with Tilly from Tina Sandwich, Soapbox and The Big Day who are preparing to play Glasgow’s upcoming festival of musical discovery.

00:15 Four-piece, almost uncomfortably raw punk band.

00:25 Tina Sandwich is me and my band of best friends
00:30 playing sort of like Joan Jett style power pop,
00:35 like pedal to the metal rock music, pop rock.
00:41 If I'm trying to sell it to someone, I guess,
00:44 are you looking to have a good time, have some fun,
00:46 watch some good tunes and high energy,
00:48 I'd say something along those lines.
00:50 We go up there, have a lot of fun, dance about,
00:53 leave it all on stage and hope the tunes also resonate
00:56 with some people as well.
00:57 So that's kind of a wee bit of a pitch for you.
01:00 It's really just all energy.
01:02 It's energy and kind of like rhetoric.
01:07 I've been playing in bands forever,
01:10 obviously just since school.
01:12 I just always wanted to write music and play music
01:16 with whoever my three best friends are at that time.
01:20 So this is kind of my latest iteration of this.
01:24 I was writing a lot of music through lockdown
01:27 and then was just sort of looking for a new fun way
01:30 to put it across and came up with Tina Sandwich.
01:34 We're not making beautiful melodies or anything,
01:37 it's all harsh sounds, it's harsh words as well,
01:39 but if you agree with the message and you like to move around,
01:42 then you're going to, I think most folk are going to
01:44 have a good time at a gig.
01:46 So, first question, what's your favourite band
01:49 you've played in Glasgow?
01:50 And second question, what's the favourite venue
01:53 you've been to in Glasgow before a gig?
01:55 Ooh, that's good questions.
01:57 Hmm, my favourite venue in Glasgow...
02:00 I feel like we might have different answers.
02:02 Yeah, you go first.
02:03 Tough one.
02:04 Macclesie.
02:05 [laughter]
02:07 Probably the Barist to be honest,
02:09 just because it has so much mystique about it.
02:12 Macclesie's one that we kind of did a lot of our early gigs in
02:16 and kind of figured out a lot of what this band would end up being in,
02:20 so that'll always be quite special.
02:22 I'd say my favourite venue to play in Glasgow
02:25 was probably Maccles to be honest,
02:27 just because of the event with it being Tenement Trail last year,
02:31 and it was like the midnight slot, and it was like queued down the street,
02:34 and there was just like this electricity in there,
02:37 the atmosphere was amazing.
02:38 That was probably my favourite sort of Glasgow show/venue.
02:43 Favourite gig or venue that I've been to in Glasgow is probably...

02:50 That's a really difficult one actually.
02:52 I'm not from Glasgow, so...
02:55 Like I'm from Aberdeen,
02:57 but we would come down to go to Barist shows like three times a year.
03:02 There's just so much tied up in memories for me,
03:05 just like making the big two-day excursion to come down
03:08 and see a cool show at the Barist.
03:10 Yeah, it's very cool, very pretty.
03:12 I always like going to King Tut's, just because of the history,
03:15 and you see a lot of the new bands coming through tour in the UK
03:18 always usually stop at King Tut's when they're doing a Glasgow show,
03:21 so I'd probably say King Tut's, yeah.
03:23 It's got a special aura about the place, for sure.
03:25 Favourite we've played probably is St Luke's though.
03:28 Yeah, we love St Luke's.
03:29 For me, I don't know, I don't know what you'd class transmit as a venue,
03:33 because that was probably my favourite...
03:35 The River Stage.
03:36 The River Stage.
03:38 But that gig for me was my favourite,
03:40 because the atmosphere around it was so hyped up and everything.
03:43 But if that didn't fit the criteria, then I would agree with my cools,
03:47 because of just the atmosphere that was surrounding the town,
03:50 everyone was quite buzzed up, and it was the last show,
03:52 and there was a lot of people there, so it was good fun.
03:54 If the priority was still going, then I would definitely be there, wouldn't I?
03:57 Yeah, so many early memories of going to gigs for the first time,
04:01 when you first have that buzz of seeing shows,
04:04 where it's not a concert that you've gone to,
04:06 where you're a mondai, but you're actually in a grassroots venue,
04:10 there's a hundred people there, they're all really drunk,
04:13 and throwing themselves about, and the band are like three inches from your face.
04:17 In terms of a gig that I've seen,
04:22 I quite enjoyed the SWG3, the Warehouse Room,
04:26 that's quite nice to watch a gig,
04:28 because when we supported Pond, that was last year,
04:31 but that was one of my favourite gigs I've ever seen,
04:33 I quite like the industrial look of it,
04:36 and all that stuff, but yeah, that's probably one of my number ones.
04:40 We're so lucky just to be in Glasgow,
04:43 because there's so many venues,
04:45 for the size of the city, when you go through Edinburgh,
04:47 Edinburgh's got some amazing venues,
04:49 but for the size of Glasgow, there's one on every corner,
04:53 it's so good, there's something for everyone, every night of the week.
04:58 So who are you most excited to see at Kevin's show last year, if you get the chance?
05:01 I'm pretty sure we'll all have our own answer.

05:08 All my buddy bands, like Junk Pups,
05:11 they just keep getting better, same with Soapbox.
05:14 Bems, I think Bems will put on a good show, man, yeah, he's great.

05:24 I've seen them at their Dirty Laundry show at Macool's,
05:27 and my jaw was just on the floor,
05:30 but again, what an energetic band,
05:32 they've got such a good look and a good sound,
05:35 and they're just so entertaining,
05:38 but it's like they're entertaining,
05:40 it's not like you're so engaged in what you're seeing,
05:42 it's like a full-on performance,
05:44 it's not just the music, it's like a whole show.
05:48 I want to see Bottle Rockets, because I've heard a lot about them,
05:50 but I've never seen them.
05:52 I'm excited for Melange as well.
05:54 I was going to say Melange as well.
05:56 I'm really looking forward to seeing where he's playing, actually,
05:58 and what time, and if we're able to make it along,
06:00 I really hope we are.
06:01 Lindsay Clark as well, who's kind of the opposite of our style,
06:04 she's a singer-songwriter,
06:06 but she's got one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard,
06:09 and her music's really beautiful as well.
06:11 That would be good.
06:13 It's good seeing them at the BBC thing,
06:15 but it'll be nice to go and see them in a different atmosphere as well,
06:18 so that'll be great.
