00:00 Well great support here at the Falls Park in Belfast for Connor Quinn, local boy of course.
00:06 And a bill that is stacked with local talent. So the 25 year old with that record.
00:15 Round one. One beat of course just that one draw, six wins, four inside the distance. Brian Castro who
00:22 arrives here from his Spanish base. Two wins, six defeats and a draw on the record.
00:31 He was stopped by Matt McHale in Glasgow a few months back but
00:35 that's something about him usually but it could be a big statement for Connor Quinn if
00:44 well he can add to those stoppage wins. But of course as we know Eric it's not all about that
00:50 particularly this stage of his career. He's had a stop start career as well due to things beyond
00:54 his control with a brain scan that delayed matters for him but still plenty of time for him to learn
01:02 on the job as he is tonight. Yeah young man loads of time went through a bit of adversity all right
01:07 but vastly experienced amateur boxer he was. Tipped for the Tokyo Olympic Games you know he
01:14 was in the mix and he decided in 2019 to go in an opposite direction and went out to Australia
01:21 and moved over there and turned professional out there. Had his debut out there one fight and then
01:27 wasn't happy and came back home and decided to take up where he left off and is now managed
01:36 by Mark Dunlop who was my manager as well and Mark has great plans for him.
01:42 There's good work early on in this contest scheduled for six rounds.
01:46 A snappy work from Quinn the magnificent as he goes by.
01:53 He's a nice tidy boxer he's a very good jab. Very good left hook to the body as well.
02:02 The right hook's not bad either. It's not bad and you know for
02:09 such a light boxer he packs a punch.
02:14 Well just at the start of the round I think we saw that as well Castro complaining to the
02:19 referee very early which is a good sign for the Quinn corner as he is a little uncomfortable in
02:26 there you feel the spiteful shots all one direction from the man wearing the black and green shorts.
02:32 His name blazing across the front of the band of course. Castro was a bit of a pain in the back
02:37 of the band of course. Castro with the blue and gold. Yeah he's not enjoying this at all. Castro
02:45 and that one draw that Connor Quinn has on his record even though that many people thought he
02:51 won that fight but it was a four-round fight and someone of Quinn's level and experience he
02:57 shouldn't be really boxing four-round fights you know this is a six-rounder it's kind of where he
03:02 should be at six rounders and upwards and heading in that direction. It's always tricky when you do
03:09 a four-round fight you know to make sure of the victory. Well it's all one-way traffic
03:18 the opening round in this contest it's all Quinn who has the final say in the round as well.
03:24 I think Castro will have better nights more comfortable nights than he has found here
03:29 at the failure. Yeah very dominant opening round from Connor Quinn has found his measurement of
03:36 Castro from the from the start has his distance absolutely spot on and he's tagged him a few
03:41 times there with good body shots and head shots and you know he's only going to warm into this
03:46 fight more as it progresses. So he was on the undercard your final fight. Yeah my final fight
03:55 back in September. You ended as a champion though you went out in the right way. Yeah yeah I had my
04:00 moment you know I reached my Everest as I like to say. Delighted I felt a sense of
04:08 fulfillment and a peace of mind just washed over me and I was able to
04:13 hang up my gloves and be at peace with my career.
04:20 In this arm it can be a great thing. Well it's good to hear that because it doesn't
04:25 always work that way for so many fighters that can't kind of leave it behind but
04:29 obviously you're forging away with cometries and all the rest of it and a busy life outside
04:34 of the ring for you. Yeah I love boxing I love being around it love being associated with it and
04:38 and albeit it's easier on the outside of the ropes than the inside but uh yeah I'm enjoying it.
04:47 As is Connor Quinn again on the front foot just really pinging his man all over the place at the
04:53 moment. That was a nice little right hand over the top there and great speed.
04:59 Really good distance work. Astro trying a big loop and right hook and just
05:08 again Quinn just having that measurement having that distance spot on.
05:13 And it's so disheartening when you're to a big punch and you know you've missed it just by an inch
05:17 it can be very disheartening and uh Quinn just seems to be boxing so well here.
05:24 Well there's a defiant shake of the head from Castro there. Solid job.
05:30 But he's really doing what he wants in there.
05:35 Yeah I've seen some of Connor Quinn's earlier fights you know and I can already see a huge
05:43 improvement in him here now in his style in his shape just his feet are flat just how grounded
05:49 he is in the ring good defensive work and he's even like as I said for a super flyweight he's
05:54 punching with a lot of power.
06:10 Castro's only been stopped once of his six defeats so I mean if Connor Quinn can force a
06:15 stoppage here in this in this fight that would be a big statement. There's just a little burst of
06:20 energy there from Castro just trying to let the hands go a little bit he's now urging on Quinn.
06:24 I'm sure that's the wisest idea now gets on his bike. Yeah a clear sign that a fighter's hurt you
06:31 know when they start calling on and they start coding because it's just a distraction but uh
06:38 he's dangerous still too and he landed a good left hook to the body there himself.
06:42 Yep certainly the best moment for Castro that it was a good shot.
06:46 Quinn still in control still just marches forward.
07:05 Oh brilliant.
07:06 Lead left hook excellent.
07:10 There you go he's starting to really nail Castro now.
07:15 Good variety as well lets the hands go and the crowd really invested in this.
07:22 I love it. Excellent round for Connor Quinn. The bell came at a good time for Castro there.
07:34 Quinn is starting to turn the screw now Dom.
07:37 Well the crowd is very much building here as well and they're going to enjoy
07:43 watching this as the replays show and the big screens Connor Quinn going to work.
07:48 Another fighter that's just from down the road Connor Quinn here from West Belfast you know so
07:58 a lot of his fans will be out there family friends and in only a seven to eight fight
08:05 it's great a great platform to be on and uh you know um Mark Dunlop from speaking to him
08:12 earlier he has big plans uh for Connor Quinn in the very near future.
08:18 Job to do here though. Second round.
08:26 Such a big deal for these local lads to get on this card here
08:29 Falls Park the failure such a big event in the calendar. This open air setting a beautiful
08:36 setting as well with the rolling hills in the background and and for some unknown reason the
08:42 rain hasn't fallen yet which is fabulous. It knows better. Good job to the body from Quinn.
08:49 It's a real stab to the body very good.
08:53 Sickening punch.
08:58 Little bit of showboating from Castro.
09:12 Good hand speed from Quinn.
09:27 Oh nice yeah there's that right hand over the top again. Brilliant punch.
09:39 Just looks so composed Connor Quinn.
09:41 So fit as well great condition. He has every punch in the book. He's a great repertoire
09:49 for his shots his combinations are three four five punches great high volume puncher exciting.
09:55 Oh good right hand as well and yeah he timed that right hand beautiful. Castro took it well
10:04 right on the chin but almost turning his back in the corner there Castro again. I think there's a
10:09 lot of defiance there he's yeah he's showing a lot of negativity in terms of his body language.
10:15 Again these are sore punches coming in.
10:29 This is a very dominant performance from Quinn completely in charge. Bossing the fight.
10:47 Castro just does not know what to do has no answers and it's going to be a long long night for him.
10:56 Shot selection has been impressive hasn't it as you say the repertoire is all there.
11:00 He's got the hand speed as well.
11:01 His angles are good as well his footwork is really brilliant.
11:09 Good little just a little drop of the knees there he was able to avoid that big left hook from
11:17 Castro so as much as he is very offensive he's quite astute and defensive as well.
11:24 Yes
11:26 Well another dominant round from Connor Quinn.
11:40 The adversity that we touched upon earlier was devastating for him. He
11:48 had the routine brain scan there was evidence of a stroke that he realized.
11:54 It was caused by a hole in the heart which has been corrected now so it's
11:57 full steam ahead now but those kind of issues that fighters sometimes have to do without other it can
12:02 be absolutely devastating but thankfully for Connor Quinn he's fit to fight and we can see he can do
12:07 just that. Yeah like I mean boxing's his life boxing's his passion and just to be told that
12:12 like you know you can't do it for medical reasons is an absolute disaster like you know that you know
12:18 he had to get second opinions he had to get more advice and thankfully he's managed to get through
12:25 it all and there was something similar with Ryan Burnett when he started his career and he went on
12:29 to achieve in sport. What a fighter he was as well from this very city. Absolutely world-class.
12:37 I was privileged to be ringside at the arena when he beat Zan at that time for to unify the
12:42 belts it was an incredible night and as you say you've talked about Belfast and Belfast boxing
12:48 and you can't disagree it's an incredible place to watch boxing and to enjoy boxing and to talk
12:52 to people about boxing because the knowledge in this city is incredible. It's just a proud boxing
12:57 city you know and they love the boxing here it's a it's a it's almost a religion here they just
13:03 they love it and they're steeped in it and there's so many fight fans around the city as well
13:08 I was lucky enough to spar with Ryan Burnett as well and just to see how good he was up close
13:15 and personal he was just outstanding. As boxing fans we all want to talk about the good that the
13:24 sport does but never has it been more evident than in a city like Belfast with the problems
13:29 that this place has. Boxing has been such a unifying force. Yeah it's been a real game changer
13:37 uniting and uniting everybody. He's still hanging in there Castro you know he's
13:46 I didn't think after round two that he was going to be still hanging around in round four but
13:52 he's showing some resilience but still getting peppered there with a good one two by Quinn.
13:57 Well Castro he wants to be busy he doesn't want to be stopped that's for sure he's got dates in
14:05 the diary like most of these road warriors although he is due to fight Harry Mullins
14:10 across the water in a month.
14:13 Yeah so he'll be thinking of his next business gig but Connor Quindle want to
14:20 produce something memorable and special here and
14:25 judging by what I'm seeing in the ring I know there's a lot of energy left in Quinn he's in
14:32 great shape and wouldn't be surprised if he really opens up over these next couple of rounds and
14:38 really goes for it. Either way it's a good dominant display of boxing from him.
14:44 We always hear a lot about getting the rounds in and fighters you know they'll say that after a
14:55 fight when they've gone they all want to stop their opponent as well don't they it's a
15:00 it's a no-lose situation when you put in on a show like this anyway if he was to get this guy out of
15:03 there great if he continues in this form for the six rounds great still yeah it's the real
15:09 contradicting answer we if we get the knockout we love it but if we don't we say we needed the rounds.
15:14 Good work to body and head again from Quinn still
15:27 he's mixing it up.
15:30 He's still smiling Castro is his little nod to the crowd. He's surviving like in this fight but
15:42 he's not really doing much to be honest. He's felt the power to the body as well you know there's a
15:51 he is quite he's blowing quite heavy in the corner there but um you know he probably he'll
15:57 probably back himself to get through these next two rounds but pretty sure Connor Quinn will put
16:02 the foot down and really go for it because just looking at him there he looks like he has a lot
16:08 more in the tank load of energy and we know that the punches that he the combinations and punches
16:13 and punches you know he's loads of energy and loads of as I say a great repertoire of shots.
16:19 Nice boxer to watch.
16:22 Smaller divisions need more attention I feel as well because if you enjoy watching boxing
16:31 really when these and we've seen with the likes of Inouye the smaller guys can capture the
16:36 imagination of the world whether that I mean Inouye technically as well as the power and everything else
16:41 he's just shown and he's stepped through the divisions a bit like these smaller guys can often
16:44 do yeah but the technical ability and the speed and everything else I think it can be just a thing
16:50 of beauty the smaller guys. You're so right you know and we can see them landing all those big
16:54 punches and you know those technical shots and take them as well and come back so there's always
17:02 a very high class level of boxing when you watch them and it's really exciting compared to some of
17:07 them say the middleweights or the heavyweights where if they land a big shot you know the fight
17:11 could be over but you know in the super flyweights and flyweight divisions you get you you tend to
17:16 see a lot more action.
17:18 He's just got that calm almost neutral look on his face Quinn he's just very composed and
17:33 it's a casual look like you know that he's out for a walk around the park
17:38 you know to look at him you would never think he's a boxer you know just that that little
17:42 kind of a choir boy look about him and when he gets in the ring and that bell goes he's
17:48 he just transforms. He doesn't show any emotion does he? He could play poker that lad. Yeah absolutely.
17:54 With head moving.
18:00 I know
18:09 and that was a nice box in there Castro was calling him in trying to lure him in to
18:24 land a big punch but uh threw out a three punch combination every one of them was blocked by
18:30 Quinn and then he landed a counter uppercut so really top level boxing.
18:35 Quinn goes to work again in the corners a big wild swing from Castro the pair of them now
18:55 having a little bit of a laughing joke in there. Yeah but uh not a fan of this at all Castro doesn't
19:00 have the tools to match Quinn so he's play acting now because he just he knows that he's he's like
19:07 he you know Quinn is the far superior boxer here and uh you know when you're when you're not unequal
19:12 on an equal level with him you know he's just trying to play act and distract Quinn from his flow.
19:20 Castro won't care too much he's just heard the sound to signal the end of the fifth round and
19:34 he's only three more minutes to get through and his job will be done.
19:38 I'm just wondering how distracting it might be for the fighters in this environment there's a
19:45 lot going on around the ring isn't there? There's people spilling in all the time it's an open air
19:50 event which is different for fighters if they haven't done that before and again it's just with
19:54 it being a festival and a festival atmosphere it can be distracting you can almost catch the
19:58 fighters looking around the crowd and and because it's still bright and light here as well at the
20:02 moment. Yeah but that's Castro like you know he's he understands his role in the in this game but
20:07 he's just doing everything he possibly can to upset the rhythm and the flow of Connor Quinn but
20:12 Connor Quinn is certainly not um you know occupied with anything going on around him
20:19 you know what's happening outside the ropes or what you know he's very tuned in and
20:24 going about his business in a very professional way and getting the job done just Castro just seems
20:29 to be a very awkward opponent and very hard to uh really finish because he has that negative
20:36 negative style and he's on the retreat all the time so
20:43 when they don't engage it can be quite hard to nail them.
20:46 So
20:55 as you say before he's just got under three minutes now to just try and
20:59 see this one out and avoid the worst of Connor Quinn's combinations.
21:09 Again you have to have some confidence when you go by the Magnificent don't you you gotta have a
21:16 lot of belief and we can see why. That was a good overhand right there he's a nice boxer Connor Quinn
21:21 you know and he's in a weight category you know super flyweight where there's so many opportunities
21:25 you know and uh I was just speaking to Mark Dunlop there earlier and he uh he shared a bit of
21:31 exclusive information with me that I'm you know happy to share with you all so on October the
21:36 14th Connor Quinn is going to fight for the vacant Commonwealth silver flyweight title
21:41 and he's going to fight um Chris Liddell from Scotland so uh that's going to be uh his first
21:49 title fight and all he has to do is just get through the rest of this fight here a couple more
21:54 minutes left in this final round and he has a big opportunity in October 14th. And everybody likes a
22:04 good Celtic clash. So breaking news from Eric Donovan a man himself no stranger to the big
22:13 fight nights he's both amateur and pro now delighted that he's this side of the ring.
22:20 So that will be Saturday the 14th of October Mark Dunlop's show in the
22:31 Girdwood community hub in Belfast it's a great center I was at a boxing show there a couple of
22:36 times and it's a really brilliant venue I'm pretty sure that uh people will descend on there to watch
22:42 the magnificent fight for his first title in the profession in his professional career.
22:57 Lovely little body shot there from Quinn it's one of those glancing body shots that just kind
23:01 of scrapes the body it really can be a sickening punch and I don't think Castro would like that at
23:08 all. He's got 30 seconds now to to see it out and Quinn must be counting down the seconds in his
23:15 head Castro you know he's uh not he hasn't really enjoyed this at all but you know what to be fair
23:20 to him he's managed to navigate his way through this. He's earned his pay. Sure has.
23:28 Well he knows he's nearly over the line. You know even going the distance is a moral victory for him
23:43 you can see what it means to him.
23:48 He'll certainly have easier nights you feel Brian Castro that was a tough six rounds for him
23:53 but it was exceptional boxing from Connor Quinn.
23:56 Yeah a total shutout obviously. He shut out he did what he had to do
24:02 he'll have stiffer tests in his career no doubt but uh job done.
24:08 So
24:25 that's all one-way traffic the Belfast man just far too much for Brian Castro who
24:30 tried everything to distract.
24:36 The magnificent to no avail.
24:37 Ladies and gentlemen please show your appreciation for four blocks they put on a great show for us
24:47 at the sixth grade round we go to the judges score card judges scored about 60 points to 54
24:54 declare a winner by unanimous decision
25:07 so
25:17 poses for the photos.
