00:00 Taylor Swift is known for baring her soul in her music, especially when it comes to
00:04 love. Since her very first album, the "Invisible Strings" singer has continued to get candid
00:08 about her romantic journey, turning each new love and heartbreak into art for her fans.
00:13 Access Hollywood is looking back on her romantic timeline so far, starting with her first relationship
00:17 in the public eye with Joe Jonas. Taylor dated the Jonas Brothers singer in 2008, but they
00:22 called it quits that same year, with the country artist famously telling Ellen DeGeneres that
00:26 Joe had ended their relationship in a 27-second phone call. Taylor is rumored to have written
00:30 "Forever and Always," "Last Kiss," and "Mr. Perfectly Fine" about their split, but she
00:34 seemed to hint in her folklore track "Invisible String" that there's no longer any bad blood
00:38 with her and Joe, singing, "Cold was the steel of my axe to grind / For the boys who broke
00:41 my heart / Now I send their babies presents." The bob star's next major public relationship
00:46 was with Taylor Lautner, her co-star on the rom-com Valentine's Day. The two dated in
00:50 2009, and Lautner has said the fan-favorite song "Back to December" is about their relationship.
00:55 That same year, Taylor was romantically linked to John Mayer, her "Half of My Heart" duet
00:59 partner. Their time together is rumored to have inspired her scorching ballad "Dear John,"
01:03 as well as the story of "Us" and her "Midnight's" track "Would've, Could've, Should've." Both
01:07 "Back to December" and "Dear John" were featured on Taylor's third studio album, Speak Now.
01:11 Shortly before the album's release, the music superstar told Access how she navigates releasing
01:15 songs inspired by real-life relationships.
01:18 "Did you give them a heads up and say, 'Oh, by the way,' or are they just gonna hear it
01:21 when they hear it?"
01:22 "I think they're just gonna hear it when they hear it. I've been really secretive about
01:29 this whole record as far as playing it for people. I've only played it for a few people,
01:33 even my closest friends. I don't think I'm gonna give anybody heads up that they're the
01:42 inspiration for songs on the record, 'cause they're gonna know."
01:45 "They'll know pretty much."
01:46 "They're definitely gonna know when it comes out, so I might as well not give them the
01:50 heads up and have them be anxious until it comes out."
01:54 "Exactly. Are you anxious at all for them to hear it and maybe some sort of feedback
01:59 at some point?"
02:00 "There's definitely gonna be some feedback, I can assure you. But for me, it's interesting.
02:05 I've never been afraid of telling the whole story in the form of music, because I think
02:10 that's just kind of having written songs for my formative years, when I was like 12, 13,
02:18 anytime I would feel loneliness or pain or, I don't know, just rejection, I would kind
02:25 of transfer that into, 'It's okay, 'cause I can write a song about this later.' I've
02:30 lived that way ever since, and it's just been the way I process emotions, really."
02:36 "Is it tough sometimes to lay it all out there like that, or is that the only way you know?"
02:41 "That's really the only way that I know how to do things. I don't think I would be able
02:44 to tell a partial story or a very general version of 'This is what happened.' It's just
02:51 part of it for me. That's part of why I love it."
02:54 In 2010, Taylor sparked romance rumors with Jake Gyllenhaal when they were spotted out
02:57 together in New York City. But news broke that the pair had split months later. Their
03:01 whirlwind romance is rumored to have inspired a large chunk of her 2012 album, Red, including
03:05 the heart-wrenching power ballad "All Too Well."
03:08 Nine years later, Taylor released a 10-minute version of the song as part of her Red re-record
03:12 and turned it into a short film. Access Hollywood spoke to Taylor at the short film's premiere,
03:17 and she reacted to how the song had become such a fan favorite over the years.
03:20 "When you hear the fans singing the song…"
03:24 "It's really got my heart expanding. It's insane. I love them so much, and that's
03:30 what all this is about. I'm just so glad they're having fun, because I just want
03:34 them to have fun this week. Because they filled my life with a lot of fun."
03:38 "Joy and everything. Tell me, singing these songs this time around, I've heard you
03:44 say that you cried through a lot of the press the first time you were promoting Red. Like
03:49 it was tough. And now, I wonder when you were back in the studio singing the songs this
03:56 time, did you have that same feeling, or were you in a different headspace?"
04:00 "I think recording it, really it was going back and trying to create as authentic a
04:08 replica of the originals as I possibly could. With songs on the original album, I wanted
04:14 them to sound exactly alike. Then with the vault tracks, I wanted to be as creative as
04:20 I possibly could. So these are songs that no one's heard before, so I wanted them
04:23 to be the best version. These are the first impressions of these songs. So they're
04:28 singing so loud, I love them so much."
04:29 "It's so good, right?"
04:30 "It's beautiful."
04:31 "Okay, so this song, everybody talks about it being one of their favorites. You did a
04:36 10 minute short film. It's written and directed by... Okay! How did it feel to be on that
04:45 set knowing that this was a story that you were going to tell, mainly to be a gift to
04:49 all of these people who've made it something so special?"
04:52 "Oh, it really just was wonderful because when you have a secret, I love planning things
04:57 secretly for them. Because they're so rewarding, they do this!"
05:00 "Right, they show up."
05:02 "They do this, and it's so rewarding to surprise... I can't believe they care that
05:05 much, honestly, still."
05:07 "Okay, listen, they care a whole lot. I've been online looking at some of the Easter
05:10 egg and the connections that they've made. The one that killed me was Dylan and Sadie's
05:15 age difference. They were like, 'Okay, no, there's a secret somewhere in there. There's
05:19 a secret somewhere in there.' Are they reading too much into it?"
05:22 "They are the best detectives in the world. I love watching their theories too. I love
05:27 looking at... I like scroll TikTok, like watching their theories so often, all the time."
05:33 "Oh, I love that."
05:34 "And so I love to just watch what they come up with because they're brilliant. And also
05:38 sometimes I'm very into numerology. Sometimes they find things I didn't even plan."
05:45 "Really?"
05:46 "Math."
05:47 "Okay."
05:48 "95% of the time I'm planning it. But there are some times when they're like, 'The math!'
05:52 and I'm like, 'Oh my God, the math?'"
05:54 In 2012, Taylor had a summer romance with Connor Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F.
05:58 Kennedy. The two attended Connor's cousin Kyle's wedding together, and Taylor even
06:02 wrote the Reds' song "Starlight," inspired by RFK and his wife Ethel Kennedy's love story.
06:07 After their breakup, Taylor was romantically linked to Harry Styles. Their romance is rumored
06:12 to have inspired lots of 1989, including the cleverly named song "Style." There's also
06:16 "Out of the Woods," in which she refers to a snowmobile accident that she went through
06:20 with an ex, believed to be the One Direction alum. While promoting 1989, she told AXS Hollywood
06:25 why she included that story in the bridge.
06:27 "With that part of the song, that was just something that happened in my life. And I
06:30 think that, honestly, I think I put that in there because people think they know the exact
06:38 narrative of the way that my life has gone. And they think that everybody who reports
06:45 something is telling the truth, every source is a real friend close to me. When truly,
06:53 the reason most of the things in the media that are written about me aren't true is because
06:57 none of my real friends would ever talk to the press. And if you go through something
07:02 like an actual life-changing event and nobody reports it to the press, people think it didn't
07:09 happen. But the truth is, most people are good, most people are trustworthy, most people
07:14 are professional, and you only get this handful of very loud people who are very gossip-centric."
07:22 Over the next few years, Taylor embraced her single life and celebrated her independence.
07:27 And she told Access Hollywood how she was feeling happy being on her own.
07:30 "When you've been through a few things in your life and you begin to value your happiness,
07:36 when you've gone through times where you have been stressed out or life was more drama-filled,
07:45 when you're in a phase where you're happy and you're on your own and you're free and
07:48 you're independent, you kind of protect that happiness more."
07:52 "When you've been through heartache and you get to a place where you're like, 'I feel
07:55 okay, I'm good, I'm really good, I think I'm just going to keep this going.'"
08:03 "And you know, it's interesting how people will say to you, when you tell them that you're
08:07 happy on your own, the first thing they say is, 'Oh, don't worry, you'll find something.'
08:12 Like, 'No, you don't understand, I'm good.' 'Oh, but don't worry, he's right around the
08:17 corner.' It's like, no, that is so completely the opposite of the point. And everybody just
08:24 has good intentions and they think that in order to be happy, you have to have someone
08:28 else complete you. But in certain circumstances, when your life completes itself, I think it's
08:34 important to really explore that and then embrace it."
08:37 "Yeah. And you have to go, you know, I think it's relationships too that help us figure
08:40 out who we are. You're like, 'Okay, that's what I don't want.' And when you go through
08:44 heartache, you start to figure out really who you are. So when you get to that happy
08:48 place, you're like, 'Okay, now I know how to move forward.'"
08:51 "Absolutely. And I think it's also important in your 20s not to use other relationships
08:56 as a band-aid if one doesn't work. And I think people say all the time, 'You need to spend
09:03 some time to yourself and figure out who you are.' And I never really understood it until
09:09 it happened to me. And I woke up one day and I just realized, 'I'm in New York because
09:15 I want to be in New York. I cut my hair short because I wanted to. I made a pop album because
09:19 I wanted to. There was absolutely no one else influencing me. And that was something I was
09:23 very proud of."
09:25 Then in 2015, she went public with a new relationship with Calvin Harris. Taylor described their
09:29 romance as "magical" in an interview with Vogue. The two dated for 15 months before
09:34 splitting the following summer. After their breakup, it was revealed that Taylor had co-written
09:38 Calvin's hit song, "This Is What You Came For."
09:41 The songstress was linked with Tom Hiddleston later that year, with the two dating for a
09:44 few months. Their romantic travels included a trip to Rome and Taylor's home in Rhode
09:48 Island. She later fell in love with Joe Alwyn and embarked on a six-year love story. The
09:53 two intentionally kept their romance out of the spotlight, but it was a constant theme
09:56 in her music, with so many tracks on "Reputation" and "Lover" being inspired by their connection.
10:01 Joe even got into the studio with Taylor, helping write songs on her albums "Folklore"
10:05 and "Evermore."
10:07 Fans were shocked when news broke that the pop vocalist and the "Conversations With
10:10 Friends" actor had split a few weeks into her Eras tour, and fans speculated that her
10:14 song "You're Losing Me" was about their breakup. Later that spring, Taylor sparked
10:18 romance rumors with the 1975 frontman, Mattie Healy. The two were spotted outside the studio
10:23 together, and he even performed with Phoebe Bridgers, opening up for the "Delicate"
10:26 singer on the Eras tour. The romance was short-lived. News broke a month later that the two had
10:30 gone their separate ways, but a new man in Taylor's life wasn't far away.
10:35 During her Kansas City stop of the Eras tour, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelsey tried to give
10:39 her his number. He told the story on his and his brother Jason Kelsey's podcast, New Heights.
10:43 "I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has
10:47 to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings. So I was a little butthurt I didn't
10:51 get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."
10:54 "You made her a bracelet?"
10:55 "Yeah. If you're up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received
10:59 a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on
11:03 it. Not right now."
11:04 "Your number's in '87 or your phone number?"
11:06 "You know which one."
11:09 While he didn't connect with her that day, it seems that it wasn't long before sparks
11:13 flew. The two sparked dating rumors that fall, and Taylor seemed to confirm all the speculation
11:17 when she later attended Travis's Chiefs game. The pop star cheered on his big plays and
11:21 even sat next to the athlete's mom, Donna Kelsey.
11:24 While Taylor has had quite the romance journey so far, it's clear the true loves of her life
11:28 are her fans, and they love her right back. At the 2023 VMAs, she gushed over having the
11:33 support of Swifties as she accepted Video of the Year.
11:36 "All I have to say tonight is thank you. I'm blown away. Thank you so much to the fans.
11:42 I love you so much."
11:44 "I love you."
11:55 (upbeat music)
