Commissioner Jourova accused Moscow of spreading fake news.
Transcript
00:00 Brussels is concerned about disinformation coming from Russia in view of upcoming national
00:06 and European elections.
00:08 European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova says she`s convinced the Kremlin is already
00:12 active in manipulating European voters.
00:16 She now wants to text biggest companies that signed a voluntary code of practice on disinformation
00:21 earlier this year to help fight it.
00:24 There is a war in the information space waged against us and that there are upcoming elections
00:30 where malicious actors will try to use the design features of the platforms to manipulate.
00:38 Upcoming national elections and the EU elections will be an important test for the code that
00:43 platforms signatories should not fail.
00:47 Some of the largest online platforms like Google and Meta that signed the code of practice
00:51 six months ago now published a first report on Tuesday showing how they`ve turned commitments
00:56 to reduce the spread of disinformation into practice.
01:00 According to the report, millions of fake accounts were identified and misleading content
01:04 was restricted.
01:06 Commissioner Jourova also had a message for Elon Musk who withdrew Twitter from the voluntary
01:09 code of practice earlier this year.
01:12 Mr. Musk knows that he is not off the hook by leaving the code of practice, because now
01:19 we have the Digital Services Act fully enforced, as Twitter has been designated as the very
01:25 large online platform.
01:27 Of course, there are obligations given by the hard law.
01:32 So, my message for Twitter is you have to comply with the hard law and we will be watching
01:41 what you are doing.
01:42 According to her, it`s the combination of AI and disinformation which is creating the
01:46 biggest headache.
01:47 So, how easy is it to address these new challenges?
01:50 This analyst says that the largest platform`s dominance can be challenging and also that
01:54 the EU`s current policies are not enough.
01:57 We have a contradiction.
01:59 On the one hand, the platforms want mobility in terms of content.
02:06 The content often creates this mobility.
02:09 So, they go to face something that on the other hand creates the benefit and the profit
02:17 that they want.
02:18 So, it`s an important parameter in the fight against disinformation.
02:19 But there are other important dimensions, such as education.
02:20 People, citizens from a young age, should be educated, to get this critical view of the
02:21 digital media.
02:22 Another solution being proposed includes technologies that automatically identify fake
02:23 news.
02:24 The EU`s current policies are not enough.
02:44 So, it`s a challenge.
02:45 It`s a challenge.
02:46 It`s a challenge.
02:46 It`s a challenge.
