00:00 It feels incredible. I'm so pleased to be a member of such a vibrant and diverse art community here in Los Angeles.
00:08 So more than anything I wanted to show up to just be part of the community.
00:11 You are known for using text throughout your artwork. I've seen your videos on YouTube.
00:18 It's really cool. Tell us about your phrase, "I was born to love, not hate."
00:23 I love that you infuse social justice throughout your work in those messages.
00:29 Thank you for that recognition. "I was born to love, not to hate" is a phrase from Sophocles,
00:34 a Greek playwright. It's over 2,000 years old, translated into English, of course, more recently.
00:40 And what I love about it is that it's a reminder that in every generation we return to storytelling,
00:46 narratives, and myths, and writers, you know, to help us understand human nature.
00:53 And I think we're going through a period of time, both in the United States and internationally,
00:59 where we have the opportunity to ask ourselves what we were born to do.
01:04 And were we really born to be in conflict? Were we really born to hate other people?
01:09 Or were we born to love each other across our differences and across our nationalities, religions?
01:18 You know, and so I personally think that doing the work that love requires is worth it.
01:25 So that's what it means to me.
01:27 It's very relevant today. And tell us about the Grant Love Project. I've seen really beautiful
01:34 pieces. I love those necklaces. Tell us about it and what it is benefiting.
01:39 Thank you. So the Grant Love Project came about, sort of, a late night idea of how, as an artist,
01:45 I could be an alchemist and help give to nonprofits at the very beginning of my career,
01:52 when I didn't have much money. So I was like, "Oh, I'll design something that then could be sold
01:56 or donated and sold by local nonprofits." So it's over, it's almost 15 years old,
02:04 and we've helped a lot of different nonprofits, both be friend raisers and fundraisers.
02:11 So recently we partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation here in Los Angeles,
02:17 and we have a really exciting pop-up shop coming up soon at Fred Siegel.
02:21 We're going to be working with Jennifer Hudson and her foundation,
02:24 and a lot of really exciting new projects. So we have focused on the arts from Project Angel Food
02:34 with food insecurity issues, and with Jennifer it'll be getting school supplies to kids in
02:42 Chicago. So it's more like, are we a good fit for a nonprofit is the biggest question, but
02:47 always happy to help. That's amazing. And it seems like
02:51 Keanu has been a big part of your artistic journey. You both came out with a book in 2011,
02:59 and then later on in 2016. Was that the first time you met in 2011? And did that bring you
03:06 guys together? And how has he been an influence on your work?
03:09 Well, am I blushing yet? Let's see. Keanu and I were originally introduced by a mutual friend
03:19 who thought we had a lot in common. And from that introduction came the idea of doing a book
03:26 called Ode to Happiness, which was really meant to make people laugh with us and sort of began
03:34 an exploration of what we both love, which is sort of ideas in bookmaking and conceptualizing
03:40 a project and getting it done from the beginning to the end. And no detail is too small. So
03:46 the fact that every day he gives it 100%, and that certainly has made me want to do the same.
03:54 And how do you guys support each other through both of your careers?
03:58 We cheer each other on. You know, how else?
04:02 We are, you know, we're really fortunate in that we're able to have conversations and curiosity
04:10 about what the other person is doing, even if it's in a completely different field. And yeah,
04:15 I'd be 100% supportive of the other. And you guys have been together for a long
04:20 time. What is the secret to making a long term relationship work?
04:24 I think loving the other person. I mean, truly loving the other person. And I think listening
04:29 and, you know, I think curiosity is so sexy that curiosity about life and kindness, of course.
04:37 And will we be seeing Keanu tonight making an appearance?
04:41 You know, unfortunately, and good for the Dog Star fans out there, Dog Star has a performance
04:48 they're doing. So unfortunately, he's only here in spirit, but off playing music tonight.
