00:00 So, what's up with the West African countries these days?
00:07 We saw a coup in Niger, complete overhaul and now this.
00:12 Burkina Faso's military junta announced that it successfully thwarted a coup attempt
00:18 which had been planned by unidentified individuals seeking to destabilize the country and attack
00:23 its institutions.
00:25 While specific details of the thwarted coup were not provided, the junta stated that arrests
00:30 have been made and further investigations were ongoing to identify the instigators behind
00:36 the plot.
00:38 The military prosecutor disclosed that four people had been detained and two others were
00:42 currently awaiting capture.
00:44 They launched an investigation based on credible allegations related to a security threat involving
00:49 officers.
00:51 Tensions with Burkina Faso's armed forces were exacerbated after the suspension of French
00:57 news magazine, "Huen Afrique", which the junta accused of publishing "untruthful" articles.
01:05 In response, thousands of pro-junta demonstrators rallied in Ouagadougou and other areas to
01:11 show their support, countering rumours of a brewing mutiny against the authorities.
01:16 Burkina Faso has faced instability due to armed groups with ties to Al-Qaeda and Islamic
01:21 State.
01:22 These groups have fuelled an insurgency that threatens the security of the nation and its
01:27 neighbouring countries in the Sahel region.
01:31 In September last year, junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in Burkina Faso's
01:36 second coup in eight months.
01:38 The two takeovers were each triggered in part by discontent at failures to stem a raging
01:42 jihadist insurgency.
01:45 On Tuesday, thousands of people took to the streets of Ouagadougou following a call from
01:50 Traore supporters to defend him amid rumours of a coup on social media.
01:56 This came a day after junta suspended French news magazine, "Huen Afrique", for publishing
02:01 what it calls "untruthful" articles that reported tensions and discontent within Burkina
02:07 Faso's armed forces.
