00:00 Well, well, our war hero has arrived.
00:03 "Killers of the Flower Movement" was a series of murders
00:06 of Osage men and women
00:08 to bilk them at the discovery of oil on their land.
00:11 The Osage Reign of Terror was a fascinating piece of American history.
00:15 I was drawn to the idea to tell this terribly tragic story
00:19 that was never brought to national attention.
00:21 Marty obsessed with telling this story
00:23 with the most honesty that he possibly could.
00:25 One of the key things was that it was drawn to this world,
00:28 where friendship and love existed
00:31 with latent extortion, exploitation and murder.
00:33 When this money started coming,
00:36 we should have known it came with something else.
00:38 In our film, Ernest develops a relationship with Molly Burkhardt.
00:44 I don't know what she said,
00:45 but it must have been Indian for "Handsome Devil."
00:47 Ernest was encouraged to marry her by his uncle, Bill Hale,
00:50 in order to get her family's shares in the oil profits.
00:53 Hale was a very enigmatic presence in Osage country.
00:56 He definitely represented somebody that wanted to take advantage
00:59 of the situation at all costs.
01:01 The time is over.
01:02 There was a need to tell this story for Martin Scorsese.
01:06 There was something intrinsic in him to do this story justice.
01:10 There's a sinister nature of the murders of the Osage people.
01:13 Expecting a miracle to make all this go away?
01:16 You know they don't happen anymore.
01:18 I wanted to do justice to the Osage...
01:20 so that the audience feels the immensity of the tragedy.
